More Switch Rod Practice....

More Switch Rod practice this evening at Kroger Park. Got some nice distance cast and caught a Bass and a number of Bluegill. Especially liked the Bluegill lurking mid-pond but well within reach of the Switch Rod! Caught the Bass on a Foam Grasshopper; others were a mix of the Grasshopper and a Near Deere!   More #bass & #bluegill on the #switchrod this evening! #neardeere &#foamgrasshopper were key! Denison Dam Report...

Image
Liking this one from today! texoma1231: Below the Denison dam 8-30-2016 Fishing below the Denison Dam is showing some improvement. Not Great but good. Stripers are showing some energy as they are chasing the shad. I am hoping that this is an indication of additional oxygen in the water. The best times for fly fishing seem to be just as the water is turned on and just as it is being turned off. Current schedule for generation is 1:00pm - 5:00pm daily. These fish were caught today just as the water came on. All were caught on a solid white clouser. I caught and released 8 fish. All were about the same size as the fish in the photos. I am guessing 3-5 lbs. Hopefully the lake will turn over completely soon and we will be back to normal patterns. Fishing is improving!!!! Lawn Done; Wine and Striped Bass Steaks!

Back to the daily grind at work plus had to get some lawn work done. It’s that time of year when the lawn needs to be mowed more than once a week. So, no fishing… bummer! That said, we did cook Striped Bass steaks from Saturday’s fishing trip to Denison Dam… add a glass of wine and all is good despite not being able to fish today!   Lawn is done, glass of #wine while cooking #stripedbass steaks from Saturday’s #denisondam #flyfishing trip at #texoma A photo posted by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on Aug 29, 2016 at 6:55pm PDT

COAF Field Team Vlog #5 - "Local Ponds and Denison Dam"

Image
Road is open again! This round we do a quick recap of the local ponds fished this past week – Bethany Lakes, Sonic Pond, Eagles Nest aka “Pond Behind In-N-Out Burger”.  And then, we go into Saturday’s trip to Denison Dam. Was a tough go but did catch and release a couple of Carp as well as hook into two nice Striped Bass! Bethany Lakes was a quick trip where we fished  a Foam Grasshopper and caught Bluegill and one Bass. Sonic Pond had us missing strikes but did land a little Bass on a Neare Deere. Eagles Nest was interesting as we had not fished it a while; no Bruiser Bass but did get a nice Bruiser Bluegill! Saturday’s Pattern! As for the fishing trip to Denison Dam, on a whim decided to make the run to the Tailrace as we noted the Realtime Release and Generation Schedule showed no water flow and no scheduled generation, respectively. With those conditions, the pools and runs would be ideal for wet wading and fly fishing! (see our archived post for more on the Realtime/Generation Sch

Eagles Nest Pond aka "Pond Behind In-N-Out Burger"

Late start this evening but did make it out for a round of fishing. Decided to try Eagles Nest Catch and Release Pond also known as the “Pond Behind In-N-Out Burger”. Used a 5-Weight Fly Rod and started with a Yellow Foam Grasshopper. Had several strikes but no hook ups. Was using a size 8 hook, so the little scrappers were pecking at the fishing fly without getting hooked. After a while, switched to a White Near Deere and started catching little Bluegill and Bass. Was having a good time especially with the light strikes that made great practice for trout stocking season! Overall had a great time fishing, even gotta nice Bruiser Bluegill… posted it on the Fishing Bulletin Board , too!   #flyfishing at #eaglesnest pond #bass #bluegill & 1 nice bruiser too! It's True... El Pollo Loco is Open Now!

El Pollo Loco opened in Allen today. Last time we ate at one was in Reno, NV back in 2010 or 2011. That streak has ended with today’s opening! Sidetracked from #fishing … #elpolloloco opened nearby! A photo posted by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on Aug 24, 2016 at 12:09pm PDT

Only One at Sonic This Round

Was a tough go today at Sonic. Started with a Foam Grasshopper; had two strikes and missed the hook set. Then, lost it to a tree. Switched to a Blue/White Near Deere and struck out. Put on a White Near Deere and finally got a little Bass to hit. Only one today but was still good to get a round in!   Mojo was off today but did get a #Bass on a #neardeere #flyfishing A photo posted by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on Aug 23, 2016 at 5:10pm PDT

Quick Trip to Bethany with the Five Weight and a Foam Grasshopper

Lots of rain last week coupled with lot of work made for a tough time to go fishing. Started raining this afternoon, so had no plans to fish but then saw a break and made a run to Bethany. Grabbed the five weight fly rod (one that I broke and fixed last year) as it already had a Foam Grasshopper on it. Bite was steady with Bluegill, Sunfish, and Shellcracker. Did get one Bass to take as well. Lost count of how many but did get a few sample pictures posted on Instagram ( coaf.field.team )   Able to wet a line today, #flyfishing with #foamgrasshopper… #fish liked it! Community Lakes

Image
Nice Bass from the local ponds!     ckcrew: Re: Community Lakes Well, I had a much better weekend than fisherman13 had. Saturday after watching the UFC card at a friend's house in carrollton, I decided check out a pond around the corner from his house(at midnight). It was a good night! Ended up catching 10 bass. 2 lbs, 6 ozs Then caught this fatty around 1: 4 Lbs, 5 ozs This one had a ewg hook stuck in his gullet. It looked like he broke off very recently. I tried to do some surgery and remove the hook but I was unsuccessful. So I let him go with the hook still in his gullet. I prob lost another 3-4 nice fish due to some error on my part. I've been fishing with a fluorcarbon leader and it feels very different versus tying directly to braid. I'm still trying to get the feel of it. Retrieved from http://texasfishingforum.com/forums

Denison Dam

Image
Bummer on the dead Stripers… texoma1231: Re: Denison Dam I fished below the Denison Dam yesterday afternoon. The only generation was for 30 min from 4:30pm to 5pm with one generator. I arrived about 3:45pm and did see one fish caught from the OK side on a top water plug but the fish was small. I did managed to catch one small striper after the generation started. Caught on a swim bait from the Texas side. I did see a few small fish caught on the Texas side during generation but nothing big. All were around 1-2 lbs. I did not see any fish caught from the OK side during generation. I have included a photo of the south wall of the flood gates on the OK side. If you look closely you will see a lot of white spots at the base of the south wall. Those are large stripers that are dead or dying. The photo was taken from the parking lot on the Texas side. The oxygen level is very low and the water temp in the lake is 84 and the survival rate of the big fish

Lake Somerville

Somerville report looks good!   J-Moe: Re: Lake Somerville Most of the summer Ben and I have been fishing in the slower moving water on the sides of the chute. It has continued to be less and less productive so I decided to challenge the 2200 cfs flow with the fly rod again. Finally, after 2 years I figured out how to be successful. Sunday morning was incredible fishing. I waited until 8 AM for a break in the rain. I caught 15 keeper white bass before 9 AM. It started pouring so I took a break for about 45 minutes. They started reducing the flow at about 8:30. When I started fishing again at 9:45 the bite was insane. I was catching white bass on every cast for a while. As they continued to reduce the flow the fishing slowed down as well. I finally quit about 11:30. I ended up catching around 30 keeper white bass and another 5 to 10 dinks for the day. I kept a handful for a friend. Most of the fish were caught on a white clouser. They actually cl

COAF Field Team Vlog #4 - "Admin Things..."

Rain and more rain this past week plus having to put in extra time in our day jobs had us sidetracked from fishing. No matter, did take care of a few items from the “to do” fishing list like boat registration renewal. Posted below is the latest Field Team Vlog that covers a few admin things from the Team! PS: Weekend is clobbered with non-fishing things to get done. No worries, if an opportunity shows where we can get a round of fishing in, will take advantage of it it and wet a line! No fishing this round… admin things like boat registration renewal, fishing license, iFishNews… https://t.co/O4ZZhKrs30 via @YouTube — StockerTroutFishing (@iFishRadio) August 20, 2016

COAF Field Team Vlog #3 - Quick Trip... "Just a Flesh Wound"

Image
Mowed the lawn with lots of daylight to spare! So, went fishing on a quick trip to Celebration Park’s East Pond. Took the 2-Weight Fly Rod and was going to fish a Tenkara Fly. But, on the first cast, hooked my thumb… no worries, “just a flesh wound”. Caught several Sunfish and a Bluegill that went for a Foam Grasshopper! Then, head home to take care of the Tenkara Fly issue. In short order using an online tip on hook removal and with a little help, was able to remove the hook with minimal pain! COAF Field Team Vlog #2 - Bethany Lakes

Weekend in flux; not sure what to do or where to fish. No worries, fished Bethany Lakes and caught fish! Here is the second Vlog post from the Team! Still not sure what the plan is tomorrow but will figure a way to get a line in the water! Till next time… Good luck and good fishing!

FW: Watched Forum: Fly Fishing : Re: First Trip to the Brazos below Whitney

Image
More reports on the Brazos! Golfer Jeff: Re: First Trip to the Brazos below Whitney Robert is a striper/hybrid hunter. Generation is good for those fish. Canoeing or yakking downstream for black bass and sunnies is different. You can get ahead of the Generation and stay there all day down to Dick's. Both of the guys above know what they are talking about. If you want stripers and white bass, stay home. If you want black bass and sunfish (with maybe a carp or cat thrown in), come on down. Or just sit tight and come to Colorado with me Retrieved from http://texasfishingforum.com/forums

COAF Field Team Vlog #1... Sonic Pond This Round

Image
Playing around with the camera and green screen. Put together Vlog #1 that shows the action at Sonic Pond using the Traditional III Fly Rod from Cabelas and a Foam Grasshopper! Had started out with a Near Deere but after took hook ups with Bass that threw the hook, decided to switch to the Foam Grasshopper! Lost count of how any Bass were caught. No Bruisers but would say it was in the double digits! Do stay tuned for more Vlogs; hope to mix things up some more once we get the hang of the camera/green screen!

Switch Rod Practice at Bethany This Evening!

Took the Switch Rod to Bethany this evening for some practice. Started with the Switch Cast, then shifted to the Two-Handed Overhead Cast, and then back to the One-Handed Overhead Cast but with a twist. Have discovered that a short flip of the fly line forward takes up slack and loads the rod for an easier One-Handed Overhead Cast. While practicing did get several Bluegill, Sunfish, and one Bass with a Near Deere and a Foam Grasshopper. Fun stuff! PS: Lots of people playing Pokemon Go this evening.   Went with the #switchrod this evening. #neardeere #foamgrasshopper worked #flyfishing A photo posted by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on Aug 9, 2016 at 7:17pm PDT

No Fishing This Weekend... Went to Hot Springs!

Image
No fishing this weekend. Went to Hot Springs, Arkansas and enjoyed the hiking, the food, the wine and drinks, and the mineral baths! Lots of fun but need to find more info about the fishing. Looked like lots of promising areas to fish!

Cabelas Shipment Arrived!

Had a gift card that was expiring soon. Got a deal online with a 9′ 5wt Fly Rod, 11′ 8wt Switch Rod, Waders, and a Jacket! Fly Rod went for under $25; Switch Rod went for $60… not a bad deal! Hope to use them this upcoming Trout Season. Did sneak away and try the Switch Rod out. Heavier weight rod made a difference in casting the heavy weight forward fly line. Can cast a “mile” with ease with no back cast courtesy of the Switch Casting technique! Celebration Park North Pond This Round

Image
Fished the North Pond at Celebration Park yesterday. Brought the two-piece Micro Fly Rod and the Spinning Rod. Hoped to catch a few scrappy Bluegill and Sunfish while setting out the Water Wolf Camera on the Spinning Rod. Fun stuff!

Celebration Park Northeast Pond

Image
Stopped by Celebration Park this evening and fished for Bluegill and Sunfish with the two-piece Micro Flyrod. Caught several Bluegill and Sunfish using a Tenkara Fly. While fishing for the little scrappers, put out the Water Wolf Camera and fished for whatever would bite. Had a number of strikes but no hookups. Still working on the video but did post a short clip of one Catfish stealing our bait! PS: Video was lost in the web migrations; here is another video of a nice size Catfish being caught and released!

Sunday at Clear Lake Park

Image
Had lots of fun fishing Saturday putting in the kayak at Avalon Park (Lake Lavon). Decided to give it another go but this time putting in at Clear Lake Park (Lake Lavon). Brought two kayaks and a fishing buddy. I started out focusing on Crappie, and began locating submerged trees and brush with the fish finder. Found a couple of trees, and had several strikes but could not connect. Our fishing buddy caught several nice White Bass while trolling a point. Opting to work the point, began casting and drifting the point instead of trolling. In short order, had caught eleven while I continued to strike out on Crappie. Not wanting to miss out on the action, finally changed from Crappie to White Bass and began connecting as well. We used Slab and Jig Rigs cast and then bounced/jigged on the bottom. Lost count of how many were caught and released after twenty-one. Bite was steady with a good mix of Keepers. Kept one White Bass that went 11″ in length. Remainder we kept were much bigger! Done #k
