Fly Tying This Evening... #flytying

Image
Did a little fly tying this evening. Last round we ran out of Griffith’s Gnat; several days ago made a variant of the PMC Emerger that combined the PMC Emerger and the Griffith’s Gnat. We called it the PMC Griffith’s Gnat Emerger or PMC GNE. This evening tied more of the PMC GNE’s and also more Griffith’s Gnats in size 16 and 18. If all goes well, next round we won’t run out of these fishing flies!

Griffith's Gnat and a PMC Emerger at Bethany...! #flyfishing #troutfishing

Image
Trout were moving about and feeding on the surface at Bethany this morning. After working different parts of the pond, settled in on the “point” and was able to limit out sight casting to passing schools. Caught two on a Griffith’s Gnat, then ran out of the fishing fly… too many “tree fish” liking the fishing flies. Switched to a PMC Emerger – a fly we used on the Blue River in the past on trout actively feeding on/near the water surface. Was able to get three more to make a limit! The PMC Emerger is a variant that uses black tying thread, a small piece of white foam as an indicator, and grizzly hackle.  Add the hook, and that is all it takes to make one! Since the action shots were cut short when we ran out of battery, did add pictures on how we tie the PMC Emerger for anyone interested in tying their own. Simple fly, simple tie! #flytying tonight. Need to refill on #griffithsgnat & #pmcemerger for those stocker #trout A photo posted by COA...

Griffith's Gnat on a Caddis Hook Keeps Working...! #flyfishing #trout

Image
Fished the Griffith’s Gnat on a caddis hook on Monday at Waterloo and was able to get a limit. Fished the same fishing fly at Bethany on Tuesday and limited out too! Monday we tried fly fishing an ultralight spinning gear. After trying different fishing flies, came back to the fishing fly that worked for us last time we fished Waterloo – the COAF Griffith’s Gnat . This time the trout wanted movement in the fishing fly and soon was able to limit out with five trout. For the ultralight spinning gear, we tried Super Dupers and Power Bait. Was able to land two using Power Bait. Did hook but lose two while landing them. Also, had one strike on a Power Worm. Tuesday with the weather being so nice, decided to fish Bethany. Was not sure how the trout were biting as the Cormorant have been feeding on them. However, we lucked out – the trout were biting! For us, sight casting to passing schools of trout and then slowly dragging the fishing fly in the water was triggering s...

COAF Field Team Vlog #29 – Two Limits at Waterloo This Round! #troutfishing #flyfishing

Took a little but found the pattern at Waterloo Park Pond in Denison. After trying a Near Deere and trailing GRHEN as well as several other patterns, went with a COAF Griffith’s Gnat when we saw lots of surface activity. Noticed on several trips to Waterloo in the past that trout were feeding on something just below the surface. Key was to use a Black Midge or Griffith’s Gnat fished wet and in the right size – size 16 in today’s instance; else, the trout ignored the fishing fly! Also, our fishing buddy managed to limit out using a Gold Super Duper. Started with a Silver Super Duper, and then the pink inline spinner we used at Heritage Park in Flower Mound earlier this month. Neither got a strike. Put on the Gold Super Duper; no strikes either for about an hour, and then they started biting! Cold and slight misty rain but all was good with ten in the creel!

Three Rainbow Trout Sunday at Bethany Lakes!

Image
Following up on yesterday post – “Quick Trip To Bethany Lakes… Running Errands” , below is the video of the action at Bethany Lakes where we caught three Rainbow Trout using a Tandem Rigged Near Deere and trailing COAF Griffith’s Gnat ! It was very cold; we had to keep clearing the rod guides on our fly rod. Also, it took a little to find the pattern but we managed to find one that worked until the Cormorant arrived and started spooking the trout.

Quick Trip To Bethany Lakes... "Running Errands" #troutfishing

Running errands for the significant other… passed by Bethany Lakes and had to bend a fishing rod and wet a line given it was stocked with trout recently. Very cold, did see lots of fish activity and fish being caught. After trying different lures and fishing flies, was able to get three using a Tandem Rig Near Deere and trailing Griffith’s Gnat fished wet. Video in the works but here is a short clip to give Readers an idea how cold it was… breaking ice off the rod guides! #troutfishing at Bethany this afternoon. Caught 3 but it was cold. Sunday Morning at Bethany

Image
Headed out to Bethany Lakes this morning for a go at whatever was biting. Action was slow but steady with several Sunfish caught using a COAF Griffith’s Gnat , and then one Bass on a Near Deere , and six Bass that went for a COAF Damsel Fly . No Bruisers but still good to get out on a nice Sunday morning! No Bruisers… largest one today!

Frisco Commons On a Sunday Morning

Image
Change of pace… went up the road to Frisco and fished the Frisco Commons Pond. It’s the same pond that is stocked with Rainbow Trout during the Winter Trout Stocking Season. Have caught little Bass and Bluegill/Sunfish while fishing for Rainbow Trout in the Winter. Decided to see what was biting during the Summer. Started fishing around 8AM and kept at it till about 11AM-Noon. Water was clear, and we could see fish lurking in the “greenery” that was growing near the banks. Used a COAF Griffith’s Gnat, Near Deere, GRHEN, and Prince Nymph to catch Bass and Bleugill/Sunfish. No Bruisers but did see several nice size looking Bass swimming in the area as well as a few Tilapia! Heard there was Tilapia stocked in the pond during the warmer months so it made sense when we saw them! Had a fun time on nice Sunday morning! Giving it a try this Saturday. Tied some Near Deere and COAF Griffith’s Gnats. Let’s see if it works at Beavers Bend State Park, Oklahoma!

Dry Flies at Waterloo This Round

Image
Fun time in Denison today. Nuclaroche and I fished Waterloo Park Pond. After a lot of missed hook sets to rising trout feeding on little, black bugs, we figured out the pattern – a COAF Griffith’s Gnat in Size 16! The Trout started out taking dry flies on a dead drift but as the wind picked up and the insects started “skittering” on the surface more, the Trout were wanting more movement on the dry fly. Fun day, especially being able to catch them on dry flies. Also, had lots of fun casting and catching fish using the COAF Micro Fly Rod ! COAF Griffith’s Gnat COAF Micro Fly Rod
