Mop Fly Worked for Green Trout!

Image
Good pattern to keep at the ready with the upcoming trout stocking season in Oklahoma and Texas for us local fishermen. It's a Mop Fly... simple, effective pattern that has worked well for trout fished on a dead drift under an indicator. Do keep this one handy for trout... but keep in mind, it works for Green Trout, too! PS: Here is a quick tie video of how I tie the pattern... Mop Fly!

Bass Chases a Bluegill... who won? #fishing #shorts

Was out fishing the other day when something splashed in front of me. Was not sure but figured it was a Bass. Checked out the video; it was a Bass chasing a Bluegill.... who won?

This $2 Lure Works, and an Inline Spinner | Plus Cool Video of a Bass Chasing a Bluegill!

Image
Here is the second in the $2 BFS Lure Series where I fish discount lures using ultralight baitcasting gear.  First round, I fished a Crawdad. This time, I fish a hard bait that looks like a Yo-Zuri lure. I started out fishing a Chartreuse one but switched to an Inline Spinner because the pond had lots of greenery fouling the lure. Soon after, a Bass chased a Bluegill into the shallows directly in front of me. Got some cool video of it! That said, I cast the spinner and caught a Bass... may have been the one that was chasing a Bluegill! Afterwards, I lost the spinner to a Tree Fish. I decided to go back to the $2 Lure but went with a White one. I also removed the rear hook and left the front hook on in hopes of fouling the lure less. It did work, caught a Bass and also lost one! I learned a stop and go retrieve works well, and watched a Bass swallow the lure... I set the hook but did not land it. Fun times... to check back, playing around with another $2 Lure... another Yo-Zuri imit...

50+ Year Old Rapala Floating Minnow Still Catches Bass!

Image
Fifty plus years old Rapala Floating Minnow  still can catch a Bass or two! Round Two of the Vintage Fishing Lure series gets more Bass. Not as big as the Cisco Kid Diver and the 7+ lbs Bass but the Rapala Minnow still rocks in the 21st Century!

Quick trip to Lake Glenn gets several Bass on the vintage Rapala lure I picked up at an antique store in Denison, Texas. Working it on a jerky retrieve, the Bass were readily striking. I did notice the Bass were tending to the North and East sides of the Lake. I suspect it was due to the clobbered areas along the South and West sides. Lots of hydrilla like greenery has much of the area fouled. No worries though... Bass were scrappy with one going about 15 inches in length!

Ultralight Baitcaster | Rainy Day Bass Fishing at the Local Pond

Image
When rain approaches, I decide to go fishing. After a ling dry spell of no rain, I go for a quick trip with the ultralight baitcaster for bait finesse fishing. In short order, it starts pouring. No worries, the bass were biting!

Pond Fishing Quick Trip aka Grocery Shopping?

Image
Running errands to the local grocery store that happens to have a small pond. As luck would have it, had the 5wt Redington Classic Trout rod, Echo Ion reel, and OPST Commando Head in the pickup… wonder who put it there? LOL! Foam Grasshopper did well again with a several Bluegill and a Bass caught and released before I went to the grocery store.

BFS Fishing | Bass on Ultralight Lures with the Kastking Zephyr

Image
More BFS fishing with the Kastking Zephyr BFS Reel zip-tied to the Orvis Practicaster Fly Rod. Caught one Bass today had other strikes but ended up losing the suspending minnow to a snag. Had to make the emergency run to Cabelas to stock up on ultralight lures. Picked up several lures but none matched the minnow we lost. If someone recognizes the lure, let us know in the comments. Will plan to buy more; really like it. It’s two inches long, weighs 1/16oz, and suspends. It has a blue back, white undersides, with a trace of chartreuse on the side, and a prominent black dot on each side! Fun stuff! bfs #orvispracticaster #kastkingzephyr

No Name Fly for Bass Fishing #flytying #flyfishing

Image
Tied another variant of the BOBTAIL Fly… this one is different, no dumbbell eyes, and only marabou plumes on the hook bend, and then saddle hackle for the body. More to come… Bass were cruising instead of on their beds Saturday. Caught one on a Grasshopper and lost one bringing it in as well. Nice day with lots of social distancing room! No Name Fly Details on tying the No Name Fly!

Fly Fishing for Bass with the Bass On Bed Fly #bobtail #bobfly

Image
Back to the local pond catching bass with the variant of the BOB fly… this one has added plumes to keep the hook riding high while on the bottom. Calling it the BOBTAIL Fly. Caught a little Bass with a Foam Grasshopper and a Sunfish… switched to the Foam Grasshopper because it was hard to see the BOBTAIL Fly due to the angle of the sun and the wind waves roiling up the water. Spied a Bass lurking by the outflow of the waterfall pool… switched back to the BOBTAIL Fly and got his attention. Nice sized Bass that reminded us of the ones that used to lurk in the pond! Good Stuff!
