Quick Tie - Sabiki Fly #coaffieldteam

Image
Here is another quick tie fly tying demo but with a twist. This is a pattern that uses foil wrappers used for Bevita Cookies, Frito Lays Chips, etc. It’s a simple tie and is rigged sabiki style. We have used it using surf casting gear on our local lake for White Bass.We have also used it trolling with our fly rods while kayak fishing. For more details on the sabiki rig, check out “ Making a Sabiki Rig for White Bass “. Also, for a more detailed (and slowed down fly tying demo), go to “ Sabiki Fly Tying Demo “. It’s longer but also demos how to make the Sabiki Rig.

Slab and Jig Rig... Sabiki Style! #fishing #kayakfishing

Image
Here is the Slab and Jig Rig that we like using when kayak fishing our local lake. Uses Uni-Knots to join lines, Overhand/Uni-knots to set the Sabiki droppers, Improved Clinch Knots to tie on the Slab and two Crappie Jigs, and a Perfection Loop that attaches to the swivel. Also, for the main line, we use 30 lbs mono, for the droppers, 20 lbs mono (can use 15 lbs as well), and for the “breakaway” bottom section, we use 20 lbs mono. Do give it a try when you get a chance! Illustration:

Thursday's Kayak Fishing Action at Brockdale Park

Image
Video of the action Thursday (June 9, 2016) at Brockdale Park is posted below. Bite was on with the White Bass going for the Sabiki and Slab Rig. Caught over 30+ but only five were Keepers. Did have a sixth Keeper but lost it while putting it on the stringer. Decided to make a better stringer for future use – see Kayak Fishing Stringer Prototype posted in an earlier video. Was hoping to test it this weekend while kayak fishing but injured wrist. Luckily, NucLaroche was down from Oklahoma, and we were able to take the jon boat out and do some jug lining for Catfish Saturday. The Stringer worked well, just gotta keep a steady hold on it as the Weed Eater Trimmer Line is slippery! Will get a video of Saturday’s action posted later.

Another Round at Little Ridge

Image
Decided to give it another try at Little Ridge this morning. More rough conditions but things calmed down later. Bite was slower compared to yesterday but then found them (White Bass) lurking in a cove. Calm water, out of the wind, and lots of feeding fish… multiple hook ups on the Sabiki Rig for White Bass ! Although undersized, the action was good with lots of fish chasing those that were already hooked! Did this for most of the morning, and then headed to the Power Plant and started working the area. No anchoring this time; instead, paddle to the boundary, cast the rig, then back paddle to remain out of the restricted area, and then set the hook when they strike. Caught more undersized White Bass this way. However, we did get one Keeper and a Catfish that went for the Slab! Fun stuff and a great workout, too! More White Bass on the Sabiki Rig!

Kayak Fished Brockdale Park Saturday

Image
Put in at Brockdale Park Saturday afternoon and went kayak fishing. Was a late start but almost immediately after launching noticed lots of fish activity on the surface. Used Sabiki Rigged Tube Fishing Flies and a Slab initially; had no takers, so removed the Slab and switched to Tube Fishing Flies and Crappie Jigs. Soon after, hooked up with a fish! As it was a hot day, decided to take a water break. While doing so, set the rod down and let the lures bob up and down in the water as we drifted. Have done this often in the past. And, on occasion will get a fish to bite. Turned out, one did this time. So, just in case, tried it again and got another strike. Did this several more times with similar results – basically we were vertically jigging! Switched back to trolling and caught more undersized fish. Also, did some sight casting to boils that were happening frequently as well as more vertical jigging. Lost count of the number of fish caught and released. Did have one breakoff that felt...

Micro Fishing at the Beach...

Made it to the Beach this past weekend. Had a lot of fun fishing for saltwater fish! Even got a round of Micro Fishing in! Caught a number of little Gafftopsail using bits of shrimp, squid, as well as the Sabiki Rig we were using to catch bait fish! More pictures and videos to come but to start things, here is a Gafftopsail that went for a bit of shrimp. PS: Here is a link to the post from the weekend’s fishing fun!

Vamanos A La Playa... Sabiki Rigs!

Image
Let’s go to the beach this round. Plan to try our luck on the coast this weekend. Tied a few Sabiki Rigs to catch some little fish so we can get bigger fish! More to come! Sabiki Rig!
