Cabelas Shipment Arrived!

Had a gift card that was expiring soon. Got a deal online with a 9′ 5wt Fly Rod, 11′ 8wt Switch Rod, Waders, and a Jacket! Fly Rod went for under $25; Switch Rod went for $60… not a bad deal! Hope to use them this upcoming Trout Season.

Did sneak away and try the Switch Rod out. Heavier weight rod made a difference in casting the heavy weight forward fly line. Can cast a “mile” with ease with no back cast courtesy of the Switch Casting technique!

More fun catching Bass on the fly with the Mardis Gras Near Deere. Caught ten this time in just under an hour. But, had to call it quits early to go on a pizza run for dinner. No worries… still beats working! Playing the next few days by ear; will see what the change in weather brings. Pattern that worked for us yesterday and today was a fishing fly that simulated a small bait fish 1-1/2 to 2″ in length. If not fly fishing, would go with a small Road Runner of Crappie Jig on a steady retrieve using Ultralight Spinning Gear.

Bass and Bluegill This Round

Tested out a new fly pattern – no name for it yet. Caught a Bass and lost a Bass, then switched to damsel flies and caught Bass, Bluegill, and Sunfish.  Will tweak the new fly pattern more, and “test” it out again. Was good to see lots of fish near shore in their beds. Looked like the bigger Bluegill were further out from shore this year. Regardless, makes for some good fly casting practice for distance… Fun stuff!

Another Quick Trip... Trout Fishing Towne Lake in McKinney

Really nice day! Still have video to edit but did limit out at Towne Lake in McKinney; caught but released five Rainbow Trout that went for an Olive Near Deere using the same setup as we used yesterday at Murphy – Corqs Strike Indicator and a Near Deere set 3 feet below it. Dead drift worked as well as a few short pull retrieves. Short on time but still a fun time… plus Charlie the Maltese Puppy got to see his first… hopefully many more to come, Rainbow Trout! Video still in the works; will post on our YouTube Channel when done. But, for tonight, we are chillin and grillin steaks and winding down this weekend!

Kayak Fishing : Texoma

Good to know!     hurricanecraig: Texoma Fished Texoma this morning from 6:30 until about noon. Water was 61 degrees. We launched at Eisenhower state park. I was trying to catch black bass but caught crappie and striper before I caught my first ever smallmouth before leaving. It was tiny. The big schools of females have made their push up most creeks last week and the week before, and with this rain a lot of hybrids will show up as well. The next week to two weeks if you know what you're doing you should be able to get well over 200 fish days. PlanoKeith and I hooked up at the creek before the rains. Before I got there Keith was already at 103 Magnum Sandies. Took me less than 45 minutes to put 25 fat female mags on the stringer. The tent caterpillars are out now. Every 30 seconds one would drop on us. When we walk around and stop we would look at our shirts and we do have 10 or so crawling on us. Bent Back Clouser Variant Worked!

Tested out a new pattern… a Bent Back Clouser Variant. This one uses a weighted keel instead of dumbbell eyes or bead chain, and the hook shank is bent back slightly. Worked well today at Sonic Pond! Tried it at Bethany Lakes, yesterday with some success. Today was much better. Used a larger hook and flashy chenille instead of flashy tinsel. Stay tuned for the fly tying demo on how to tie one!
