Fished a Feeder Creek This Round [1-04-2015]

Image
Originally published January 4, 2015 Cold temps and short on time; no Trout Reports today. Did get a snippet from Fshng84 who went fishing at the Feeder Creek to Bethany. He reported little Bluegill/Sunfish on Soft Hackle and Tiny Midges. Looked like fun especially on a 3 Weight Fly Rod. Did note that the Tiny Midge used was the same one used on the Blue River when a midge hatch starts up and the Trout start slurping them up just before they break the surface. COAF Field Team Vlog #14 - "Fishing the Lower Mountain Fork Part 1"

Image
Had a great time Saturday fishing the Lower Mountain Fork River at Beavers Bend State Park in Oklahoma! Been a while since we last fished it. Luckily, found a break in the schedule and made the run north across the border! Fished the Red Zone in the morning in hopes of a Bruiser, and then the Blue Zone in the afternoon to try for a limit. Of interest this round were: The morning round resulted in no Bruisers but did see several nice ones lurking in places. None were interested in a fishing fly unfortunately including an Albino that looked about 18″ in length. Had lots of fun catching, missing, and seeing trout in a couple of places in the Cold Hole. Water was clear and could easily see the fish with polarized glasses. Trout seemed to like the Tandem Rigged Near Deere and trailing fly setup. More important, they tended to strike when the fly was moving fast either by a quick twitch of the rod or by swing the rod fast. The rapid, short pulls of the fly line did not get any strikes. Out and About Saturday

Fished McKinney’s Towne Lake Saturday morning, and then fished Prosper’s Frontier Park Pond afterwards. Took a little work to find the pattern at Towne Lake. But, did find it… Olive Near Deere was the “go to ” fishing fly again. But, the key was the retrieve – let the fishing fly sink counting to ten, and the a long pull every 2-4 seconds. Light strikes were the norm that morning. So, we had to pay close attention to the line for any hesitation, resistance, or “twitch” while retrieving. Later in Prosper, had another tough time figuring the pattern; that is, did not find the pattern. Did get one trout to take the Olive Near Deere and another went for a Soft Hackle Prince Nymph. Was using a Tandem Rig with the Near Deere as the lead fishing fly and the Soft Hackle as the trailer. Did see others catching them. The key was Power Bait… water was murky and the trout were stocked in the whole pond like the first year when the Trout Derby wa...

Fun with the Micro Fly Rod

Image
Fished Celebration Park’s North Pond this evening for about an hour. Noticed the water level was much lower compared to two months ago. Luckily, the fish were biting. They were little… perfect for the Micro Fly Rod and some Micro Fishing!

Scouting a Feeder Creek

Image
Stopped by Bethany Lakes this evening. Fished the Back Pond for about 30″.  Had several Bluegill strike a Foam Grasshopper but was not able to hook up. Also, tried fishing a few beds but the water was murky making it tough to see the Bass. Decided to scout one of the feeder creeks in the area. Saw several nice Bass but none wanted to take a fishing fly. Switched to fishing for Bluegill and caught four. Three went for Soft Hackles and one went for a Prince Nymph. Fun stuff!

Only Four This Round

Image
Made it to Murphy City Hall Pond for another go at Trout. Caught four and missed four more but still was good to get out for another round of fishing this week! Used a Tandem Rig – Olive/Brown Near Deere and a Soft Hackle. One Trout went for the Near Deere, remainder went for the Soft Hackle. Fun stuff! PS: Stay tuned… working on posting a video of how we tie on the Olive/Brown Near Deere. Will post when editing is completed.

Another Round with the Micro Fly Rod

Image
After limiting out on Trout, decided to have another go with the Micro Fly Rod. Changed the fly line by using less backing line and more fly line. No knot to hang up on the rod guides, so I was able to get more distance on the cast. Caught two little Bluegill and one Bass on a Soft Hackle at Frisco Commons Pond. Then, took a break to get hydrated again. Sun came out in force today; even think the temps hit above 70 degrees. Much different than last years freezing conditions at this time. Later in the afternoon, fished the Feeder Creek at Bethany Lakes, Soft hackle had a few strikes but no hook ups. Switched to a Red Midge in Size 22 and hooked several soon after. Then, noticed  fish feeding on something on the surface. So, switched to a Size 22 BWO and ended up catching several more. So far, have been pleasantly surprised with the casting capability of the little rod. The cast is different compared to standard size fly rods; the back cast straightens quickly, so the forward cast is...
