Pond Fishing Fun on a 4WT Fly Rod

Image
Plan was to fish the local pond using Bait Finesse Gear and ultralight lures. Switched to a Fly Fishing when my inline spinner kept fouling on the algae. Started out with a Damsel Fly and had several strikes but no hook ups. Went to a Guadalupana in a smaller size hook compared to the Damsel Fly. Did better! Worked mainly the areas near the bank as the water level in the pond was high from recent rains. Did work a more open area in the back pond to see what was cruising the area. Caught most of the fish on a fast, short pull retrieve. Did get one Bass to take the Damsel Fly worked in its bed but as luck would have it, camera battery ran out. Fun times fly fishing with nine Bluegill and four Bass caught and released! Now if only the wind would calm down and we could get back to kayak fishing! Good luck and good fishing!

More Fish on the Fly... Fly Fishing at the Local Pond! #flyfishing

Made a stop on the way home from work Monday. Rain was in the forecast but was able to catch a Bass and Bluegill or two or more before the rain arrived. Use the TFO 6wt Fly Rod; Echo Ion 6/7/ Wt Reel, and OPST Commando to cast Damsel Flies, a variant of one, and Tube Fly Poppers. The Damsel Fly Variant did well catching them… even had fun catch a nice Bluegill that bent the rod well!

Mix It Up… #ukuleletime and #flytying ...Damsel Fly Variant!

Mixing it up this round with two of our passions – #ukuleletime and #flytying …watched the move – “The Mule” directed and starring Clint Eastwood! Liked the song by Toby Keith – “Don’t Let the Old Man In”. Decided to add it to a quick tie video of the Damsel Fly Variant we used the other day to catch bass at a local pond! https://youtu.be/a1vivsehHus

Stoney Hollow Park Pond and the Purple Damsel Fly This Round! #flyfishing

Image
Fished Stoney Hollow Park pond in Plano this morning. Brought the 4 Weight Fly Rod and went with a Purple Damsel Fly in size 10. Varied the retrieve as needed to catch and release 11 Bass and one Bluegill. No pictures or video of the little Bluegill but did get some good video of several Bass. Largest Bass went 15″ in length! Fun times… great to see the Bass are doing well in the pond still!

COAF Damsel Fly in Red! #flytying

Had a question from a Reader about how we tied the Red Damsel Fly that we used to catch the Catfish at Plano East Senior High School (PESHS) the other day. Below is a short video that details how we tied it. Other than only using two versus three marabou plumes, it is the same as described in our article, “ COAF Damsel Fly “! Do check it out; also included the video from our trip to PESHS!

Red Damsel Fly Worked Well at PESHS...! #damselflies

Decided to tie a couple of Red Damsel Flies and fish the catch and release ponds at Plano East Senior High School. Started out with a little fingerling Bass, then a Sunfish, and then a nice Catfish! Fun time… liking the Damsel Flies in purple and now in red, too! Ended the trip with 4 Bass, 2 Catfish and a little Sunfish. The two Catfish went ~15″, one Bass went 14″, remainder were scrappy fighters! For more on tying your own Damsel Flies, do check out our article, “ COAF Damsel Fly “. It’s a simple pattern that is easy (and fast) to tie!   Log Book Entry: 3/22/17 Location: Bethany Lakes – Main Pond (Allen) Time: 17:30 – 19:00 Weax: Sunny, Short Sleeve, Windy Rod: Redington Classic Trout 5wt – 9′ Reel: Echo Ion 4/5 – 6wt Flyline   Comments: Tied Red Damse Flies on a whim since the Purple Damsel Flies worked well at Bethany the last few trips; wanted to mix it up and try red! Action was steady with all but one fish caught in the West Pond. The one fish caught in the East Pond w...

COAF Field Team Vlog #23 - "Foam Grasshopper and Damsel Flies...!" #flyfishing #turnerfallspark

Quick trip to Bethany this evening. Short on time but was able to connect with Bass and Bluegill using a Foam Grasshopper and the Damsel Fly variant we like to tie in purple marabou!  Fish were active, and we are still liking the 6WT Switch! Hope to use it on trout in the near future. Maybe at Turner Falls sooner than later – see email reply to our question on this Season’s Trout Stocking at the park!
