Try holding your rod high when slow reeling a Super Duper for rainbow trout. Do let us know if it worked for you!

Limited out last weekend at Pebblebrook Community Park pond in Sherman. The discount switch rod worked well along with the Rubber Legged Near Deere and Mop Fly! Had trout readily taking both fishing flies but the Rubber Legged Near Deere seemed to get more strikes than the.Mop Fly. The Discount Switch Rod worked nicely. Ease of casting for distance when needed while minimizing false casting meant more time fishing the fly in the water and not in the air being cast! Able to demo how we cast with the setup and manage the line… OPST Lazar Line can get in the way at times. Also, did mention the Trinity and the tough go we had fishing it Saturday, March 14.

Fished the Blue River in Oklahoma for trout; your’s truly hooked and lost a few but our fishing buddy was able to bring home three nice trout caught using PowerWorms. Posted the action on the River last week on our channel. This video follows it showing the Team cooking the trout for a next morning Brunch! Do check it out!

Had a fun weekend making the run across the border from Texas to Oklahoma to have a little non-work time… Minor League Baseball, good food and drinks, fishing a river for trout and striped bass, and even a little catch and cook time! Had a great time… here is a quick recap of the fun. Do stay tuned… will post video of the fishing action later this week! PS: Added a little ukulele time and a glass of wine to close out the weekend!

Made it to the Lower Illinois River earlier this month – June 2, 2018. Had a fun time wet wading the river for a chance at trout and other fish! Went with the 5 weight fly rod and one-handed spey casting with the OPST Commando Head. Used an olive Near Deere for the fishing fly. Fishing partner opted for ultralight spinning gear and Power Bait Trout Worms. Tip broke on the rod but he did manage to catch trout using a bubble fly rig! Your’s truly only caught one trout but did miss several more. Did catch a White Bass and a Striped Bass (little one), too. Hot day but the water was cold. And, even though the water was murky, the fish were biting. Ended up calling the trip short because they started generating power. No worries… made it to OKC early and checked out Bricktown… cool place!  

Made it to McKinney this morning and fished for a couple of hours. Caught two, lost two, then had leave them biting. Power Bait, Power Worms, and corn were working. Olive Near Deere under a strike indicator worked, too. Did try a new recipe for the trout caught Friday… broiled it this time. Tasty dish, keeping this one for future 20″ and larger trout!  

Missed seeing the trout being released at Bethany Friday, but was able to stop by and check things out. Trout are there, saw a few caught, but was not able to fish. When we were able, decided to make the run up the road to Denison and fish Waterloo Park Pond! Limited out using Near Deere, did some catch and release, but then had to catch the last one to keep using a Super Duper. Overall, a great time!

Sidetracked with the day job but did manage to get the video of the fishing trip to Caruth Park in Dallas – specifically, the Highland Park / University Park area. The park has a small pond that was stocked with trout last Wednesday. Managed to catch one, lose one… and catch a Bluegill, too! Others did well on Super Dupers, Power Bait, and Corn!

Received an update from Steve in Australia… Great to hear the Near Deere is getting bit in OZ! Thanks for the update Steve! My two fishing trips were to Marysville Lake and Don Road Lake at Healesville. At Marysville I used my 12 foot tenkara rod as well as a spinning rod with a Crystal Cast float. The flies I used were the Near Deere and a Bead Headed Green Crystal Woolly Bugger which I reckon looks a bit like the Near Deere on steroids! Picked up a few rainbow trout on both flies but it was hard going. Don Road Lake is less than five minutes drive from where I live. It gets stocked with rainbow trout in the cooler seasons but it also holds perch, roach, big goldfish and eels. I fished a 9 foot 6wt fly rod with bead head GRHE nymph and a San Juan Worm under a pea sized indicator. Only caught the one fat rainbow trout that was full of milt and an 8 inch perch, both on the nymph. I’ll try to add the pictures at the end of this email.  

Happy New Years! What better way to end the last day of the year then going fishing! Took a little time but did get three trout to stay on the hook at Bethany Lakes this morning. Two went for a PMC Emerger, and one went for a Griffith’s Gnat. Lost the last PMC Emerger to a snag; will have to tie more to refill the fly box. Looking forward to more fun fishing in 2017!

Took a little but found the pattern at Waterloo Park Pond in Denison. After trying a Near Deere and trailing GRHEN as well as several other patterns, went with a COAF Griffith’s Gnat when we saw lots of surface activity. Noticed on several trips to Waterloo in the past that trout were feeding on something just below the surface. Key was to use a Black Midge or Griffith’s Gnat fished wet and in the right size – size 16 in today’s instance; else, the trout ignored the fishing fly! Also, our fishing buddy managed to limit out using a Gold Super Duper. Started with a Silver Super Duper, and then the pink inline spinner we used at Heritage Park in Flower Mound earlier this month. Neither got a strike. Put on the Gold Super Duper; no strikes either for about an hour, and then they started biting! Cold and slight misty rain but all was good with ten in the creel!

Checked out the derby hosted by the city of Murphy this morning. Saw lots of kids catching fish; us grownups had to wait till after the derby to fish. Warm weather was nice allowing for short sleeves and shorts. But, it looked like the Trout were having issues as a number of them were floating upside down and were dead or dying. Also, noticed schools of Trout cruising parallel to the shoreline and largely ignoring lures and baits. Last time we saw them acting like this, it was two years ago at Frisco Commons Pond. The weather was cold and the Trout seemed disoriented and cruising in schools parallel to the shoreline as well. We were able to get them to strike by working a fishing fly parallel to the shore. Although a school would ignore the fishing fly, every so often one would breakaway and chase and strike the fishing fly. Same held true today at Murphy! This round the Trout went for the Mardi Gras Near Deere. Caught two and lost one. Then, the bite slowed. Started switching fishing ...

Fished Waterloo Saturday. Met up with NucLaroche and had a go at the Rainbow Trout. Took some time but we limited out. NucLaroche opted for Super Dupers taking two on gold and three on silver. Fshng84 caught one on a White Near Deere and four on a Tandem Rigged Olive Near Deere and trailing Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph (GRHEN). Of the Trout that went for the Tandem Rig, all went for the trailing GRHEN. The strike was light; had to pay close attention to any twitch in the line to set the hook. Fun stuff!    

Received an update from Steve in Australia. He was able to catch a nice looking Brown Trout from an undisclosed location. Below is a picture of the Trout! Nice…!
