TRWD Flyfest Big Trout Contest | Highlights Video

Image
It was a fun time last Saturday at the 7th Annual TRWD Flyfest. We have not missed one since the first TRWD Flyfest in 2016! A fly fishing event that offers fly fishing demos, fly tying classes, fly fishing seminars, and fly casting lessons. It also hosts a Big Trout Contest which is a Team favorite. This year we were able post a livestream while we watched contestants compete. Although we missued Heat 4 and the final Fish Off to decided the contest winner, we did enjoy the fast paced action that Heats 1 – 3 provided. We have posted unedited Livestreams on our Channel for reference. For those that would like a highlights version of the contest, do check out the video! Key items to note this round… fly fishing presentation and technique coupled with positioning where the fish are lurking made a difference in numbers of trout caught!

Day After TRWD Flyfest - Fishing the Lane! #trwdflyfest

Image
Had a fun time at TRWD Flyfest 2019; went back the following day. Lots of fishermen, lots of opportunity, but did not land an trout. Did lose three on the line, and saw lots more in the river as well as on other people’s lines but for your’s truly it was a strikeout. No worries… lotta fun. just wish we brought PowerWorms or Mouse Tails. Those were the baits of choice that day!

TRWD Flyfest 2018... and After! #trwdflyfest #coaffieldteam

Had a great time at TRWD Flyfest last weekend. Although we had to leave early, still had a great time. Came back the day after and saw others catching nice size trout, managed to catch one that went 16″ too! Then, came back this past Friday, March 16. Was having a tough go, but then caught one that went 20″! Great fight on the 6wt Switch Rod… looking forward to another TRWD Flyfest next year already! Made it to 2016, 2017, and 2018. Gotta keep the streak going!

Quick Update – March 16, 2018 #coaffieldteam

Image
Quick update from the Team has us sidetracked again from editing the TRWD fishing video but really tough given yours truly had the day off. So, to mix things up, decided to do a little “ukelele time” before making the run to Fort Worth to fish the Trinity River for some bruiser Trout! Have tried the week after TRWD Flyfest in the past and had a tough go at catching trout. Weather tends to warm up quickly soon after the event. That said, this round was looking like a strike out. Luckily, did get one that went for an “improvised rat tail” using a Near Deere and a Power Worm. Really nice trout that went 20″ in length! Back to editing video but already know, will be sidetracked by the Trout Derby in Mckinney!

Quick Update - March 15, 2018 #coaffieldteam

No fishing this evening. Working on editing the video from TRWD Flyfest and the day after. Having a little wine to help get us through the editing process. That said, got the day off tomorrow… so who knows, may get sidetracked again in the video editing process to make another run to Fort Worth to see what the action looks like a week after TRWD Flyfest!

Quick Update - March 11, 2018 #flyfishing

Friday was crazy with a near disaster averted due to Good Neighbors with garden hoses, and the Fire Department responding quickly to the 911 call! Grass caught fire and the wind fanned the flames catching the neighbors fence on fire…. whew! Neither houses were damaged! Made it to TRWD Flyfest 2018! Had other commitments that day but having been to the first and second TRWD Flyfests in 2016 and 2017, respectively… had to make every effort to make it to 2018! Being an Aggie and Traditions being always at the forefront… shifted schedules and made it this year… till Noon at least! Did not catch a trout but did see others in the Big Trout Contest catch them! Came back Sunday morning and fished the Trinity River starting around 9am to 3pm… had a strike or two but was not hooking up! Luckily, did get a trout to take an Olive Near Deere. Went 16″ and made for some nice trout steaks for Dinner!

TRWD Flyfest 2017! #TRWDflyfest

Had a blast at TRWD Flyfest 2017.  Not able to fish the trout contest but was able to fish and limit out at the open fishing area! Lots of lost and missed fish but did manage to get bit enough times to take five! Fishing was rough for some in the first heat of the Big Trout Fishing Contest; did see at least three contestants hook and land trout. Largest went 21″ but there were larger ones lurking in the area. Hope the event happens again next year! Will make an effort to keep the calendar open! PS: Only one landed with the San Juan Worm Ball and Prince Nymph Tandem Rig. But, had a strike on every cast before running out of the fishing flies! SaLog Book Entry: 3/11/17 Location: Trinity River – River Park Trailhead (Fort Worth) Time: 12:30 – 14:30 Weax: Clear, “Short Sleeve”, Slight Breeze Rod: Cabelas TLR Switch Rod 6wt – 11′ Reel: Lamson Liquid 4 – RIO Switch Chucker with Versitip (F)   Comments: Trout contest in the first heat has several trout caught...

Quick Update. on TRWD Flyfest 2017! #trwdflyfest

Had a great time at TRWD Flyfest. Have some video to edit but here is a quick update! Had a great time watching the Big Trout Contest with a 21″ trout caught and released! Saw several others catch trout but overall it was a tough go for most. For yours truly, was not able to join the contest; heats that remained open were later in the day and had other pressing things that called for leaving the fun earlier than we liked. No worries though, did manage to fish the area further downriver from the Contest area. And after losing a few nice ones, got our mojo back and started landing them. Ended up limiting out with five that went 15″-16″ in size with one Albino (or is it Golden or Palamino Trout) in the mix! The San Juan Worm Balls and trailing Prince Nymph (without the white biots) were doing well. But, ended up running out due to some Bruisers breaking them off! Switched to a Near Guad and caught a one more as well as missed several others. Then, went with the Near Deere...

TRDW Flyfest...

Had a great time at TRWD Flyfest yesterday. Checked out some of the fly tying demos, and joined the fishing contest on a whim. Had brought fly fishing gear out of habit but left the chest waders. Had put the waders away since the Trout Stocking Season was winding down. While walking around, stopped by the fishing contest booth and learned that an opening was available for the next heat. Decided to sign up when I remembered the hip waders were in the pick up. Kept them there as a backup set of waders, and forgot to put them away. Good thing… ended up using them for the contest. The contest worked in two-man Teams – one fisherman fished for 10″ while the other fisherman waited, then they would switch when a horn sounded. We ended up getting three on the line – one was almost landed but the other two were on the line briefly before throwing the hook or breaking off the line. For the one that was almost landed, had forgot to bring the landing net (it was put it away ...
