Trouble With Fly Casting, Try Less Line.... Getting Started Fly Fishing๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Image
Next in the Getting Started in Fly Fishing series is a video that shows yours truly catching fish using only 32 feet of line - 8 feet of line on the rod, 16 feet of line past th rod tip, and 8 feet of leader tippet. If you are first starting out and you get frustrated with your cast, try less line and focus on a stealth approach/presentation to fish lurking near the bank. And, gain a feel for setting the hook and playing a fish on a fly rod. Fun stuff! Do check back for more in the series... next up is a look at the fishing flies that came with the $33 Martin Fly Fishing Kit!

Fly Casting Demo... Redington Pursuit 8 ft 4wt! Casting 50 feet or so? #flyfishing

Image
Lucked out catching a few fish with the PMC Emerger! While out on the local pond, decided to demo the Redington Pursuit 4wt – an 8 foot rod we picked up several years ago. Noticed on the Texas Fishing Forum a question about casting 50 feet or so with a 5wt 8 foot fly rod. Did not have an 8 foot in a 5 weight. But, did have this one in a 4 weight. Able to get 50 feet plus with a double haul cast,… even caught a fish while doing the demo! Fun stuff!

Casting the EmmRod Fly Rod with a Shooting Head or WF Fly Line #emmrod

Image
Fished with the EmmRod Fly Rod the other day using the OPST Commando Head that we have on out Echo Ion 4/5 Wt Reel. Was able to cast well and catch a few fish once we made adjustments to our cast. Adjustments made were to the hand hold of the shooting head and the amount of shooting head to let out before starting the cast. Also, had to contend with line management as the mono running line tended to snag on rocks and brush at our feet. Afterwards, decided to try using a traditional fly line – specifically, a WF 5wt. Thoughts were… No need to setup each cast based on a specific hand hold on the shooting head Less snags and tangles with the mono running line would make for more fishing and less untangling of line Since a Switch Cast or Roll Cast would be limited by the short length of the EmmRod Fly Rod, benefit of a shooting head was less. And, since the plan was to fish areas where a backcast could be used, overhead and sidecast would be used most often when fishing. To check whic...

Trout Fishing Murphy, then One Rod, No Reel! #flyfishing #flycasting

Image
Great time yesterday fishing city of Murphy’s pond – City Complex Park Pond. Limited out after figuring out the pattern… tandem rigged near deere and griffiths’ gnat! Afterwards, able to try the rod, no reel concept and caught several trout. Broke out the action in a second video… check it out at “One Rod, No Reel”.   Follow-on video to our trip to Murphy’s City Complex Park Pond where we test the concept of a quality line and a fly rod for trout fishing, and forego the reel. Used about 8 yards of line, the tandem rig that the trout were going for, and a $19 fly rod… also, fly line is quality line from Scientific Angler. Just picked up a deal when it was on clearance… only $1!

Fly Casting without Rod or Reel... #flyfishing

Fly Casting without Rod or Reel… or better yet, “look ma no hands, no rod, no reel? Actually, we do use our hands and a rod but no reel in this demo. This one was fun to make…. it came about when someone asked us about the hardest thing to learn about fly casting while fishing Frisco Commons yesterday. After mulling over the question, we came up with the back cast. With a proper back cast, a good forward cast is more likely. Done wrong, then a good forward cast will not happen. Unfortunately, there is a tendency to forget about the back cast and focus on other things like timing, the 10-2 position, or the 11-1 position, as well as which rod or reel to buy. After a while, you have to force yourself to watch your back cast… subsequently, we decided the hardest thing to learn about fly casting is the back cast – easily forgotten but critical to the basic fly cast – the overhead cast. Also, in the demo we expand on the our answer noting the number one ite...
