Eagle's Nest "aka In-N-Out Burger" Pond...! #switchrod #flyfishing

Image
Decided to try another pond that we have not fished for some time. This time went to the pond behind In-N-Out Burger in Allen. It’s formal name is Eagles Nest Catch and Release Pond but we like to call it In-N-Out Pond for ease of reference. Brought the six weight Switch Rod this time, and fished Damsel Flies and a Guadalupana to catch Bass and Bluegill. Would have kept fishing Damsel Flies but lost what we brought with us to snags. Fun time… also, added a short snippet of the ponds along the Village Trail that runs between Allen and Fairview. There are three and all hold fish, just no Bruisers caught by us for some time now. Gear used:  Lamson Liquid 4 Fly Reel ,  Rio Switch InTouch Chucker Line #5 , and Cabelas TLR Switch Rod (11′-4pc-6wt / Model TLR-1106-4)

COAF Damsel Fly in Red! #flytying

Image
Had a question from a Reader about how we tied the Red Damsel Fly that we used to catch the Catfish at Plano East Senior High School (PESHS) the other day. Below is a short video that details how we tied it. Other than only using two versus three marabou plumes, it is the same as described in our article, “ COAF Damsel Fly “! Do check it out; also included the video from our trip to PESHS!

Red Damsel Fly Worked Well at PESHS...! #damselflies

Decided to tie a couple of Red Damsel Flies and fish the catch and release ponds at Plano East Senior High School. Started out with a little fingerling Bass, then a Sunfish, and then a nice Catfish! Fun time… liking the Damsel Flies in purple and now in red, too! Ended the trip with 4 Bass, 2 Catfish and a little Sunfish. The two Catfish went ~15″, one Bass went 14″, remainder were scrappy fighters! For more on tying your own Damsel Flies, do check out our article, “ COAF Damsel Fly “. It’s a simple pattern that is easy (and fast) to tie!   Log Book Entry: 3/22/17 Location: Bethany Lakes – Main Pond (Allen) Time: 17:30 – 19:00 Weax: Sunny, Short Sleeve, Windy Rod: Redington Classic Trout 5wt – 9′ Reel: Echo Ion 4/5 – 6wt Flyline   Comments: Tied Red Damse Flies on a whim since the Purple Damsel Flies worked well at Bethany the last few trips; wanted to mix it up and try red! Action was steady with all but one fish caught in the West Pond. The one fish caught in the East Pond w...

Bass and Bluegill This Round

Image
Tested out a new fly pattern – no name for it yet. Caught a Bass and lost a Bass, then switched to damsel flies and caught Bass, Bluegill, and Sunfish.  Will tweak the new fly pattern more, and “test” it out again. Was good to see lots of fish near shore in their beds. Looked like the bigger Bluegill were further out from shore this year. Regardless, makes for some good fly casting practice for distance… Fun stuff!

Too Nice a Day; Went Fishing

Image
Morning started out cold, overcast, and windy. Braved the conditions and managed to catch one little Bass and lose two others at Bethany Lakes. Later, noticed the sun was out and temps were much better than the morning. So, decided to return to Bethany Lakes in the afternoon. Used a variant of the COAF Damsel Fly – we bent back the hook like we learned from the TRWD Flyfest Fly Tying demo of the Bent Back Clouser. It worked well, but ended up losing the two fishing flies we had to “tree fish”. Switched to a Mardis Gras Near Deere; fish continued to strike at it. Water was clear and polarized glasses were key especially with one bass caught on it’s bed and another bass that required repeated casts to finally catch itas it kept turning away at the last moment. Ended the afternoon with one Bluegill and thirteen Bass. Most were small but was a great time fishing on a really nice day!
