Pond Fishing Fun | Cabelas 2wt CGR and Foam Grasshoppers 👍👍👍

Image
Planned to fish with Bait Finesse gear for Bass and Bluegill. But, the pond was too clobbered with "green stuff" that fouled lures. Switched to fly fishing - Cabelas 2wt Fiberglass Rod and the Caddis Foam Grasshopper. Was a fun time ultralight fly fishing! Cabelas 2wt Fiberglass CGR | Fly Fishing a Pond

Image
Fished the local pond the other day using the little 2wt Cabelas Fiberglass CGR Fly Rod. Paired well with the 2/3 Wt Echo Ion Fly Reel. I am fishing a Caddis Foam Grasshopper and working the pond by casting to spawning Bluegill on their nests. Polarized glasses make a difference in finding them. Cabelas CGR 2wt Fiberglass Fly Rod and Echo Ion Reel | Small Feeder Creek Fly Fishing #cabelas #flyfishing #fiberglassrod

Image
Decided to fish a little feeder creek with the Cabelas CGR Fiberglass Fly Rod. It’s a 2wt with an Echo Ion 2/3wt Fly Reel. Handy fly rod that makes for fun fishing for little bluegill, sunfish, and fingerling bass! Been using the Cabelas CGR off and on over the years, and have not had any issues… do need to make a slight adjustment in timing the cast as the fiberglass rod has a slow action. Liking the rod and the ability to take advantage of rod’s slow action to get a fishing fly to where the fish are lurking… of course in this case, a little feeder creek required minimal casting distance. PS: Lots of rain that morning caused another pond upstream from where we fished to overflow. Able to catch a Bass being washed down the feeder creek. Foam Spider and Scud Tandem Rig for Bluegill #flyfishing

Image
Finally found the pattern for the tight lipped Bluegill at the local pond. Went with a tandem rigged foam spider and scud! Most fish went for the trailing scud and was surprised the little bass were readily striking the scud! Foam Spider was a diy pattern made from Wapsi’s Foam Spider Kit. The Scud was a old pattern learned from a library fly tying video… uses possum or hares ear dubbing tied on a size 16 hook with a dubbing loop. Liking this tandem rig… plan to use it on the commute to work on a couple of ponds! Fun stuff!

Fiberglass Rod Flyfishing with a Tenkara Fly... #cabelas #cgr #orvis #hydros

Image
Starting to get over a cold, I was able to make it to the local pond and flex the little 2wt fiberglass flyfishing combo – Cabelas 2wt CGR 6’2″ fly rod and Orvis Hydros Sl1 2 wt. Tied several tenkara fishing flies and constructed a 7 foot tapered leader using a 30lbs, 15lbs, and 6lbs mono recipe. (see DIY Fly Line) Combo cast easily; reel is lined with Cabelas Prestige Plus 2wt WF floating line. Able to cast 30 plus feet and more without effort. The fish were lurking near the banks and in the feeder creek. No long cast were needed but was good to know the combo could deliver distance if needed. Midway through the trip, discovered I had missed the first rod guide in my haste to go fishing… going to blame it on the medicine that I am on. LOL! Overall liking this lightweight combo… makes for a fun fight with little bass and bluegill! Fun stuff…! Click on pictures to see more about Cabela’s CGR Rod/Reel Combo and deals they are offering!

Cabelas Prestige Plus WF2F Fly Line for the Hydros Fly Reel Delivered! #flyfishing

Image
Almost there… new fly line delivered the other day at the Cabelas in Allen. Picked it up but this cold and the recent storms has yours truly sidetracked. Do hope to be fishing a pond sooner than later with the Cabelas CGR 2wt Fiberglass Rod and Orvis Hyrdos SL1 soon! Trout Fishing Pottsboro Lake! #flyfishing #tfoflyrod #cgrflyrod

Image
Fished a new place yesterday – December 27, 2019… Pottsboro Lake located just north of Dallas in the town of the same name… Pottsboro. Stocked with trout earlier in the month, was not sure if the trout would still be there. It’s a small pond and may have had heavy fishing pressure. As it turns out, the trout were there. They were readily feeding on something near the surface if not on the surface. In short order, caught two limits. One of us was using a Chartreuse PowerWorm fished wacky rigged. The other used an Olive Near Deere with no indicator and fished with varying retrieves. Also, started with the TFO 6 wt Fly Rod with Echo Ion Reel. Then, switched to the Cabelas 2 wt CGR Fiberglass Fly Rod with an old 3wt fly reel. Lots of fun… PS: Ordered a new 1-3 Wt Orvis Hyrdos Fly Reel to use with the CGR going forward. Cabelas CGR Fiberglass Two Weight #flyfishing

Image
Out and about fishing with the Cabelas CGR Fiberglass. Thought it was a three weight but it is a two weight. Put a 3wt Cabelas Prestige Plus 1 reel from another rod on it. Cast nicely… even caught a little Bass at the local pond! Fun stuff! Click on pictures to see more about Cabela’s CGR Rod/Reel Combo and deals they are offering!

Sidetracked While Running an Errand! #flyfishing

Image
Out running an errand after work today. Sidetracked with some fishing at Kroger Park (aka Bethany Ridge Park). Caught Bluegill on the 2wt Cabelas CGR Fiberglass Rod and the Echo Ion 2/3 Reel. All went for a variant of the PMC Emerger… the PMC GNE! Log Book Entry: 3/9/17 Location: Bethany Ridge Park Pond aka Kroger Park (Allen) Time: 18:00 – 18:45 Weax: Clear, “Short Sleeve”, Calm Rod: Cabelas CGR 2wt – 6’3″ Reel: Echo Ion 2/3 – 3wt Flyline Comments: Bass were active and in their beds. Had one strike the fly but no solid hook ups with Bass. PMC Emerger GNE did well with Bluegill lurking in the shallows and near the feeder creek readily taking the fishing fly. Did see several nice Bass and a large Catfish cruising the area! Landed: 5 Bluegill – 4″-6″ – PMC Griffith’s Gnat Emerger (PMC GNE) – Sz 16 Click on pictures to see more about Cabela’s CGR Rod/Reel Combo and deals they are offering!

COAF Field Team Vlog #11 - "Two-Weight CGR at Bethany Lakes"

Image
Fished Bethany Lakes Saturday morning. Brought the Cabelas CGR 2-weight fly rod and the 2/3 Echo Ion fly reel. Fished a “The Simple Fly” (TSF) – a very simple fishing fly made with a hook, pearl chenille, and white chenille. If desired, add a bead head. Also, fished the Marilyn Monroe Tenkara Fly, a Red/White Tenkara Fly, and a Foam Spider (was a Grasshopper but the tail broke off). Caught Bluegill and Sunfish, and one Bass… then had one Bass take a little Sunfish that went for the Red/White Tenkara Fly. Just in case caught another little Sunfish and tossed it in the same spot. Managed to get another to take! Got some video but missed hook sets. Went back today – Sunday, and used a Micro Fly Rod and downsized the hooks. Caught more bluegill and sunfish. Also, brought the Water Wolf Camera and spinning gear and live-lined several bluegill and sunfish near Waterfall. Still working on the video but did catch one and missed others. Will post the video when...

Testing a Tenkara Fly Pattern... Oops!

Image
Tied a Tenkara Fly in a reverse hackle Olive Body and White Hackle pattern. For ease of reference, calling it an Olive/White Tenkara Fly. Tested it out a Sonic Pond and caught a Bass with it. Bite seemed slow, so headed to the Lower Pond at Bethany Lakes. Pond was clobbered with lots of green stuff but did see one nice Bass lurking in a clear spot. Casted the Tenkara Fly, got the Bass’ attention, got a strike, and then broke off. Tenkara field test ended… oops! Should have tied two instead of only one. No worries, put the scaled down Foam Grasshopper on the line and went back to fishing. Ended today’s round with eleven fish – one on the Tenkara Fly and ten on the Foam Grasshopper. Fun stuff… will get more Tenkara Flies tied for another round of “testing!

Out and About at Bethany with the Two Weight

Image
Stopped by Bethany Lakes yesterday to check out things. Water level is up from the recent rains. Looked like the trout bite was slow; did see some folks fishing but no hook ups while we were there. Tried different spots to see if anything would take our fishing fly. Been liking the Two Weight Fly Rod we picked up from Cabelas the other day but only been able to fish with it once since getting it. As it turned out, this round the fly rod worked out well on the little Bluegill lurking near a culvert. Water was crystal clear! Ended up catching 10 or so Bluegill and one little Bass this round. Fun stuff!
