Limited Out Trout Fishing the Blue River | 2022 - 2023 Trout Stocking Season

Image
Decided to fish the Blue River Saturday on short notice. Plan was to go next weekend, but not sure how work and play will conflict in the next few weeks. Saw an opening for Saturday, so went for it. Tied a number of fishing flies Friday night after work. Mainly tied Near Deere, Pat's Rubber Legs, and Mop Flies with plan to tie more GRHEN, Pheasant Tail Nymphs, and Muddler Minnows at a future date. Was worried that the heavy rain on Friday into Saturday morning would make the river murky and fast flowing. Luckily, the river stayed clear and the current was not heavy... actually seemed slow. Caught a number of trout releasing all but three. Lost a lot more as my mojo was off.  No worries, was a great start tot eh 2022 - 2023 Trout Stocking Season. PS: Shout out to Donavan and Okie Fly Gal... great seeing ya'll again. Hope to be back on the Blue sooner than later! Try a Redington Classic Trout Fly Rod in 5wt, 9ft

Trout Near My Feet! Step Lightly Wading a River. #fishing #flyfishing #shorts

Image
Decided to tie a Wooley Bugger to my  @GoFish Cam  several seasons back, and then "troll" it in a shallow side creek to the main channel of the Blue River. Was surprised how many trout were in the less than knee deep water as well as some that were near my feet! Step lightly when wade fishing!

Dry Flies at Waterloo This Round (Feb 15, 2015)

Image
Fun time in Denison today. Nuclaroche and I fished Waterloo Park Pond. After a lot of missed hook sets to rising trout feeding on little, black bugs, we figured out the pattern - a COAF Griffith's Gnat in Size 16! The Trout started out taking dry flies on a dead drift but as the wind picked up and the insects started "skittering" on the surface more, the Trout were wanting more movement on the dry fly. Fun day, especially being able to catch them on dry flies. Also, had lots of fun casting and catching fish using the COAF Micro Fly Rod !

Tough Round at Frisco Saturday (Feb 15, 2015)

Image
Late start Saturday for Nuclaroche and I. We planned to fish Frisco Commons for Rainbow Trout that morning but I was sidetracked by work and then some early "Spring" cleaning of the office. By the time all was done, it was late afternoon. Around 4PM, we made it to Frisco and fished till after sunset. Nuclaroche hooked up with one Rainbow Trout using PowerBait. I stuck with different dry flies trying to hook the Trout that were rising on the surface, and then eventually switched to the Micro Fly Rod . A quick check to match the hatch did not help either. I had caught one of the bugs flying around, and then tried several fishing flies that looked like it. No luck! Still had fun catching little Bluegill on the Micro Fly Rod!

Took A While But Found a Pattern [12-23-2014]

Originally posted 12-23-2014 Overall, the action had been hit or miss at our local pond.  Trout were actively rising on the surface throughout the day, but fishermen were having trouble consistently hooking up. There were a few fisherman who did get a limit, and as the afternoon progressed, one area of the pond seemed to have a flurry of activity that resulted in a limit being taken in less than 30" by one fisherman.  Key notes from today were: Super Dupers worked early in the day but the bite turned off Bubble Fly Rigs with a Prince Nymph were getting strikes but hook ups were spotty Black Midge Dry Fly were also getting strikes but missed hook sets seemed to be the norm Bubble Fly Rigs with a PowerWorm seemed to be the go to rig/lure today COAF Griffith's Gnat (variant of the Griffith's Gnat) worked well for rising trout For more on the COAF Griffith's Gnat, do see the article, " Griffith's Gnat on a Caddis Hook ". The Day Before... Bethany Lakes Trout Stocking [12-14-2014]

[Originally Posted 12-14-2014] It's the day before the annual rainbow trout stocking at Bethany Lakes in Allen. The Team is anxious to wet a line and hook a little Stocker Trout! The video is posted below; do check it out.  Key items from that day were: PowerBait worked initially but the action slowed but remained steady Gold Super Duper on a steady retrieve did not work Gold Super Duper on a stop and go retrieve worked Trout tended to strike as the lure fluttered down while stopped Also, last year the weather was sunny and cool; this year it looks like rain and overcast conditions are expected. Texas Trout Fishing | Three Trout, Three Bass, and Lost More

Image
Fished Bethany Lakes Friday morning for a chance at the trout. Trout were there actively feeding. Bait seemed to be catching them fished under a float. The winner hands down was a homemade dough bait that one fisherman was using. Yours truly caught three trout fly fishing, caught three Bass as well but his mojo was off losing a lot more trout that stuck the fishing fly. Did notice the trout wanted movement. Did get strikes using a Black Midge, Rainbow Warrior, and a Griffith’s Gnat. As the morning progressed, noticed it was best to recast if no strike after counting to 10 when fishing dry flies. There were a number of Bass near the pier with three caught using a White Producer – fishing fly we bought at Scotty’s One Stop on a trip to the Blue River in Oklahoma. Fun stuff! See our suggested fishing flies at our COAF Field Team Shop .

TBT to the Blue River | The Other Trout

Image
Just over two weeks away from Trout Stocking Season in Oklahoma! In two Fridays, there will be Rainbow Trout swimming in the Blue River. While checking out past videos and blog posts, came across a video that recalled a fly tying session the night before I headed to the Blue several seasons ago. Tied Near Deere in Olive and Orange, and then a pattern I called the PMC Emerger that can be fished wet or dry. Check it out the YouTube Short Video below, and do give it a try on your next trip for Trout!

Near Deere Limited Out Trout Fishing #friscocommons #flyfishing

Image
Was not sure if we would make it to Frisco to fish the Commons Pond for stocked trout. Luckily, there was a break in the weekend events. Made the short run Saturday from Allen to Frisco and fished Frisco Commons Pond for rainbow trout. Recently stocked as well as the annual Trick-A-Trout Derby was held that morning, the pond was crowded. Luckily, the bite was on! Able to limit out fishing an Olive Near Deere set 3′ under a strike indicator. No need to retrieve the fishing fly after casting. Instead, let the wind and waves move the strike indicator and let your rig drift with the wind. Watch for the strike, and set the hook! Anticipating the crowd, swapped the Hydros Fly Reel with the Echo Ion Reel that was lined with the Rio Trout Max Skagit Head. Made for ease of casting for distance despite the wind and a shortened backcast due to people all around! Video shows the action on Saturday, and then summarizes Sunday’s action… was able to fish Sunday morning before it started r...

Tandem Rigged Streamer and Midge Worked Again...! #flyfishing #blueriver

Image
Made it to the Blue River in Oklahoma Saturday. Had a great time. Water was clear and fish were active and once we figured out the pattern… able to get them on our stringer! Started with a Tandem Rigged Near Deere and John Deere; same setup that did well last Sunday. Unfortunately, was not the pattern this trip. Switched to a Streamer and Midge Tandem Rig with the John Deere and a trailing Rainbow Warrior. That was the ticket! Trout were taking the Rainbow Warrior. Did lose the rig, retied a Near Deere and Rainbow Warrior. Managed to catch one trout on the Neare Deere, else it was the Rainbow Warrior, again. Limited out with one nice trout (not on video) that we lost while landing it. Overall, nice day on the Blue… Tandem Rigged fishing flies were the key again!

Tasty Catch and Cook Rainbow Trout from the Blue River.

Fished the Blue River in Oklahoma for trout; your’s truly hooked and lost a few but our fishing buddy was able to bring home three nice trout caught using PowerWorms. Posted the action on the River last week on our channel. This video follows it showing the Team cooking the trout for a next morning Brunch! Do check it out!

Blue River Trout Fishing and KFC Buffet... Doesn't Get Any Better!

Image
Made the run to Oklahoma this weekend to fish the Blue River! Trout stocking season is winding down, so decided to make a trip and try our luck. Was a tough go with murky waters but our fishing partner caught four but only kept three trout; all were caught on ultralight spinning gear and using PowerWorms! Did see others catch them using MealWorms, PowerBait, and Marshmallows, too! Given the murky conditions, was a tough go for yours truly. Did hook (although foul hooked) one trout; and then caught one and landed it but lost in when trying to put it on the stringer! Overall, was an awesome day on the Lady Blue! Made better with some nice trout for a tasty brunch Sunday morning. Do stay tuned for the catch and cook video! After fishing the Blue River, decided to stop at Pauls Valley at the Kentucky Fried Chicken where the Colonel’s Buffet was being served! What a day… Sunny, short-sleeve weather, fishing a river, catching and losing trout, and then all you can eat KFC! It doesn...

TRWD Flyfest 2019... Saw Other Catching Fishing!

Image
Fun time today at TRWD Flyfest on the banks of the Trinity River in Fort Worth by the Acme Brick Company. Lots of fly fishing related things to do and learn, tasty foods, and tasty beer. Although we did not catch a fish; had one on but lost it, did see others do well in the Big Trout Contest! Do hope to make it back out there for another chance at a Bruiser Trout!

Catch And Cook Striped Bass and Rainbow Trout #recipe

Image
Been getting sidetracked for some time since we fished the Lower Illinois River in Oklahoma last year. Been wanting to post the catch and cook video of the brunch we had following the trip. We caught a Striped Bass and two Rainbow Trout we kept for the table. Did get other fish but released them instead. That said, do check out the catch and cook video; and do keep in mind for those who may catch a bruiser trout this weekend at TRWD Flyfest 2019!

Another Quick Trip... Trout Fishing Towne Lake in McKinney

Image
Really nice day! Still have video to edit but did limit out at Towne Lake in McKinney; caught but released five Rainbow Trout that went for an Olive Near Deere using the same setup as we used yesterday at Murphy – Corqs Strike Indicator and a Near Deere set 3 feet below it. Dead drift worked as well as a few short pull retrieves. Short on time but still a fun time… plus Charlie the Maltese Puppy got to see his first… hopefully many more to come, Rainbow Trout! Video still in the works; will post on our YouTube Channel when done. But, for tonight, we are chillin and grillin steaks and winding down this weekend!

Trout Fishing Texas Pond in Murphy Texas!

Image
Short on time Saturday but lots of action fishing a Texas Pond in Murphy Texas for stocked Rainbow Trout! Forgot the GRHEN we tied the other day but luckily the Olive Near Deere fished under a Corqs Strike Indicator did the trick to catch a limit of trout! Windy day with a slight adjustment in the presentation going from a dead drift to short pulls on the line to get the trout to strike! Fun times….!

Trout Fishing Frisco Commons with TFO 6wt, Micro Fly Rod, and Griffith's Gnats!

Image
Cold temps Saturday morning – February 16, 2019! Decided to go a round at Frisco Commons for some recently stocked Rainbow Trout. Trout derby was held last weekend; was not able to make it. Temps were in the low 30s, had to bundle up well… layered clothing did the trick but still forgot the gloves like last weekend when we fished Rowlett. This round, started fishing a Near Deere but switched to a Griffith’s Gnat when we noticed all the feeding activity was happening on the surface. Like in past Seasons, Frisco seems to have a “hatch” of some really tiny bugs. Trout love them to the point they rarely will strike anything else. Luckily, having learned our lesson we keep several sizes of Griffith’s Gnats in the fly box. Most times a size 16 will work but going up one or down one size is always a good idea in case the trout get picky. Fished from 8:30 to 4:30, caught and released five trout. Lost several others while bringing them in, and had a lot more ...

Cold Round Trout Fishing Rowlett Community Park!

Image
Able to get a round fo trout fishing at Rowlett Community Park Saturday morning. Was a tough go with temps in the 30s and a slow bite. Fished a Near Deere in White, then Pink, and then back to White without success. Added a Berkley Powerworm and started getting strikes but could not hook them. Did see a couple of turtles that may have been the culprits. Was surprising to see them active on a cold day. After several hours found the pattern… a slow swing of the rod to move the Near Deere / Powerworm slowly through the water, had several bites, and then a trout struck and was on briefly before throwing the hook! Kept at it, and managed to finally hook and land two trout. Ended up losing the Powerworm but by then, trout were striking the Near Deere using a “twitchy” retrieve. Although the bite was slow and the temps were cold, still had a great time fishing… even better to have caught and released two to avoid a strike out! PS: Do check back, next Near Deere Give Away is for two...
