Try Trout Fishing in Oklahoma | Turner Falls Park

Image
YouTube Shorts of a past fishing trip to Turner Falls Park in Oklahoma. That Season, they stocked trout above the Waterfall which made for interesting fishing as sections of the river were clobbered with brush and trees. Luckily, I found a nice spot that offered excellent access and focused my efforts on finding the pattern. After a number of fishing fly changes and varying retrieves, I noted the trout preferred an Olive Near Deere fished with short pull retrieves and no strike indicator. Also, the trout were readily striking but I missed a few until I began setting the hook as soon as I saw the trout "flash" in the water as it struck the fishing fly. Fun trip, do give it a try. But, do check with the Park as stockings may be delayed or canceled contingent on water conditions.

Turner Falls Park Fishing | Rainbow Trout Were Picky!

Image
Able to make it yesterday – Saturday – January 23, 2021 to Turner Falls Park for Rainbow Trout fishing. Was not able to fish the Park when they stocked Rainbow Trout late last year. No worries was there yesterday. The trout are still there but were extremely “picky”. Tried different fishing flies including the Pat’s Rubber Leg, Near Deere, Megaworms, Mop Flies, Dry Flies, and Midges. After removing the strike indicator, had several take an Olive Near Deere managing only one trout and missing the other two. Fishing buddy caught four on Powerworms fished with a split shot and near bottom. Water was clear and could see the trout react to different baits and fishing flies. Was different than past trips… more vegetation clobbering the river made for tough fishing. Had to locate open areas and fish the pockets and holes. Also, there were more campers and fishermen than in past trips. However, area was not crowded; trout were just “picky”! PS: Also, le...

Another fun trip to beat the heat; this one is a TBT to Turner Falls Park in Davis, OK. The OPST Commando Head made for ease of casting by the Waterfall using an “air anchor” to avoid the metal railing along the walkway. See full video at: https://youtu.be/n-vkX-REKkc

Super Dupers and Mop Flies for Turner Falls Trout...!

Image
Although it rained Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday, Saturday was dry and much warmer for the Team. Given the break in the weather, we headed to Turner Falls Park near Davis, Oklahoma for a round of trout fishing. The Team limited out with several nice sized ones that went for a Gold Super Duper. Other trout were mostly caught on the fly using Mop Flies. Of the trout caught fly fishing, one trout went for a PMC Emerger, another trout took a John Deere, else the remainder taken on fishing flies went for a Mop Fly in Chartreuse with an Orange Egg Sac or Chartreuse with a Pearl Chenille collar. Water was clear, temps climbed to the 60s, and the sun was shining. The wind did kick up as the day progressed. That said, it was a perfect day to be on a river fishing for trout!

Turner Falls Fly Fishing - November 28, 2018

Image
Trip 2 of 3 fishing Turner Falls Park in Oklahoma for Rainbow Trout. This round was tougher; started the day fishing downriver, then moved upriver later. Able to limit out, even did a “Hank Patterson” move when the fly reel fell off the fly rod while fishing… LOL! Goto 28:00 in the video to see that moment! OPST Commando Head was key again today. No wet wading though, brought the wading pants this time. PS: Echo Ion Fly Reels rock… a quick rinse in the river after dropping it, and was back in business fishing! Echo Ion Fly Reel 4/5 wt Redington Classic Trout Fly Rod (9′-4pc-5wt) OPST Commando Head (200 grain) OPST Lazarline Running Line

Alrighty, fun time out and about this past Saturday at Medicine Park. Although we struck out on trout, did enjoy a great time outdoors before the temps started dropping below freezing. So far, it has been a hit or miss affair for us. Today, we edge a little closer to success. Turner Falls Park for Trout Fishing Fun! #turnerfallspark

Image
Had a great time fishing for trout at Turner Falls Park near Davis, Oklahoma. Water was crystal clear and the trout were readily striking lures and fishing flies… at least on Friday and Saturday. Sunday they were easily spooked and were harder to catch. No worries though… able to limit out each day once we found the pattern! Video is lengthy and starts off with an overview of the area; do check it out if interested in fishing the Park!

Too Nice a Day... Fished Turner Falls, Again! #turnerfallspark

Image
Too nice a day to pass up fishing Turner Falls Park. Decided on another round of fishing in the Park while on our road trip back home to Texas. Was tough fishing the crystal clear water; trout were easily spooked and were “lockjawed”. when it came to our fishing flies. Moved to the section of the river above the Waterfall where they stocked trout; able to catch one on a Rainbow Midge, then three more on a Near Deere. Did some catch and release fishing afterwards, but later struggled to catch trout #5. 30″ before we have to leave, caught trout #5 on cone head black wooley bugger on a fast retrieve! Lots of video to edit; for now, like with Friday and Saturday, here is a video snippet of some of Sunday’s action!

Another Quick Update of Turner Falls... #turnerfallspark

Another round at Turner Falls Park for Rainbow Trout. Two of us fished and limited out. This time caught them on fly fishing as well as on ultralight spinning gear. Near Deere again was the fly of choice; tried other fishing flies but for some reason, they reacted to the Near Deere and ignored other fishing flies. Windy started howling and gusts made it tough for fly fishing. A gold Super Duper on a stop and go retrieve was the lure/pattern of choice to close out our limits. Still have video editing to do from yesterday’s and today’s fishing trips but been sidetracked with… fishing! LOL. For now, here is another short video snippet of some of the action today.   #fished #turnerfallspark again today. really windy, had to cut the yrip short. But, did limit out on #trout …caught #flyfishing as well as #ultralightspinning gear. #neardeere and gold #superduper were the key today! Turner Falls Quick Update... #turnerfallspark

Image
Made the run across the border to Oklahoma’s Turner Falls Park for some fly fishing. Recently stocked with rainbow trout, was able to get a limit Friday. Hope to try again Saturday for more fun fishing the river! Will post a video of the trip later. For now, here is a video snippet of the last fish of the day caught Friday! Near Deere was the go to fishing fly this round, but the Guadalupana came in handy, too!

COAF Field Team Vlog #28 – Turner Falls Park Trout Fishing! #troutfishing

Image
Video of Saturday’s action trout fishing at Turner Falls Park in Oklahoma. Was a slower bite than we are used to for the Park but did limited out! Planned to fish until around Noon depending on when the cold front was to arrive. Ended up fishing until around 2PM. Missed the snow but did feel the temps drop and the wind pick up. Quick Take Aways this trip: Trout were stocked above the Waterfall; the gate attendant provided specific spots where the trout were released. The Entry and Day Trout Permit fee is the same as last year $15.00 + tax… which came to $16.43. Daily limit is five for the Park, and they will check your Fishing Licence. Bite was slow compared to other trips but the pattern was similar to last year – an Orange Near Deere. Another fishermen did well with a Rainbow Warrior as well. There are larger trout compared to the 9″-14″ stockers but could not get them to strike. Also, there are lots of albino trout, making it easier to locate school...

Limited Out at Turner Falls Park Today... #turnerfalls #troutfishing

Made it to Turner Falls Park today; was able to get a limit of trout before it started snowing. No Bruisers but did see them lurking in the water. Video editing still in progress. Also, did get some underwater video clips of trout lurking nearby… here is one clip of a scrappy one in one pool!   #troutfishing #turnerfalls today. Video editing in progress but did get a #waterwolfhd uw video of a #trout lurking in a pool A video posted by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on Dec 17, 2016 at 7:52pm PST

COAF Field Team Vlog #23 - "Foam Grasshopper and Damsel Flies...!" #flyfishing #turnerfallspark

Image
Quick trip to Bethany this evening. Short on time but was able to connect with Bass and Bluegill using a Foam Grasshopper and the Damsel Fly variant we like to tie in purple marabou!  Fish were active, and we are still liking the 6WT Switch! Hope to use it on trout in the near future. Maybe at Turner Falls sooner than later – see email reply to our question on this Season’s Trout Stocking at the park!

Fly Fishing Presentations for Trout Fishing...

Image
Had a request from a Reader asking us about the fly fishing presentations we use. We looked at past videos of trout fishing trips to the Blue River, Lower Mountain Fork, Turner Falls, and Possum Kingdom and collated short clips into the video posted below. The video shows examples of what has worked for us in the past; however, we are prepared to adjust to a given situation as needed to catch fish! Once the Trout Stocking Season starts, will plan to create a follow-up video that better illustrates the fly fishing presentations we use when fishing for Rainbow Trout!

Turner Falls Fishing....!

Image
Decided to fish Turner Falls Park Saturday. It was a toss up between the Blue River, Turner Falls Park, and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens. As we headed out early Saturday morning, made the decision to head to Oklahoma, so Athens was out. Then, while coming up on Highway 82 in Sherman, decided on Turner Falls instead of the Blue River. Made it to the Park around 8AM. Discovered the Main Entrance was closed due to ongoing construction. Sign at the Main Entrance directed us to enter using the Exit Gate. After paying for the Trout Fishing Permit that included the Park Entrance Fee, headed to the area where the Gate Attendant told us to go. We learned the area stocked with Trout was above the Waterfall instead of below it like last year as the Waterfall and a portion downriver from it is closed due to construction. The area above the Waterfall had lots of trees and brush that made it tough to fly fish at times, but there were open areas and breaks between trees that allowe...
