One That Got Away | Micro Fly Rod and GoFish Cam

Image
Fished the local pond using the Two Piece Micro Fly Rod to catch Sunfish and Bluegill for live bait. Plan was to rig up our GoPro and GoFish Cameras for some underwater action shots of fish lurking in the area. In short order, managed to catch (as well as miss) a fish or two using a simple Midge pattern. Later, switched to a Tenkara fly when I lost the Midge. Fun stuff, fly fishing with the Micro Fly Rod… was hoping for more fun with the underwater cameras. Ended up only using the GoFish Cam. Did not land a fish but did see what was in the pond lurking as well as got a glimpse of the one that got away… a nice Bass that looked like the 20″ one caught last week!

Two Piece Micro Fly Rod | How Much Line Does the Reel Hold?

Image
Live stream update from the Team! Answering the mail about the two-piece micro fly rod. Specifically, how much line does the reel hold. Never measured it; decided to do so live to answer the mail! Do check out the video, and do check back… heading back to the local lake for more kayak fishing!

DIY BFS Rod and Micro Fly Rod | Quick Fly Casting Test

Image
Impromptu test of the dual DIY BFS Rod and Micro Fly Rod… mounted an Echo Ion 2/3wt fly reel with 2wt WF fly line and did a lawn test. Looks like the dual rod can cast a fishing fly no problem!

Micro Fishing | Two Piece Fly Rod at the Feeder Creek

Image
Quick trip after the day job to a feeder creek for some micro fishing with the two piece micro flyrod. Went with a Griffith’s Gnat fished dry as well as wet. Had few misses at first… smaller hook for these little fish would have been better. But, did catch a few once I found my mojo! Fun stuff! microfishing microflyrod #microflyfishing

Casting a Micro Fly Rod Demo #microflyrod #microflyfishing

Here is the follow up video we mentioned on one of our earlier iFishNews Fishing Podcast and YouTube video about Micro Fly Rods. This video shows five micro flyrods – three are ones we made and have a micro flyreel mounted on them, and two are practice fly rods from Redington and Orvis with a flyreel zip tied to the handle. We marked 25 feet as a reference, and then cast the rods to show the 25 feet distance is readily attained. There was a strong crosswind and one of the rods had less than 25 feet of line but overall all rods could easily cast 25 feet. That said, based on time fishing with them, there are several that can cast well past 25 feet. Fun stuff! iFishNews Fishing Podcast 12 - Micro Fly Rods and Micro Fly Fishing

This rounds iFishNews Fishing Podcast we talk about micro fly rods that we use for micro fly fishing on our local ponds. Several DIY rods we have made by converting Pen Rods, repurposing a broken fly rod, and building one with an ice fishing blank and wine corks for the rod handle. Recently, courtesy of a Viewer’s tip to use practice fly rods from Orvis and Redington, we have started mounting 2wt and 4wt fly reels to make a micro fly rod. Simple zip ties to hold the reels to the rods makes for a quick conversion to fly fishing rod instead of practice rods! Below is a link that shows how we converted a Pen Rod to a Micro Fly Rod: https://skyaboveus.com/fishing/MicroFlyRod Additionally, here is a past video where we caught a nice catfish using the re-purposed broken fly rod: https://youtu.be/I16KkjXkbcI Also, here are links to Amazon showing the practice fly rods we converted to micro fly rods: Redington Form: https://amzn.to/3esIjV2 Orvis Practicaster: https://amzn.to/2YkqMbD

Duck Creek Linear Park Fishing #microflyfishing #microflyrod

Image
Short video of a quick trip to Duck Creek Linear Park while on the daily commute. Brought the two piece micro fly rod and the Foam Spider and Scud Tandem Rig to work the section nearest the bridge. Key take aways this round: There are Bass, nice Bass in the area but water is clear and they are skittish! Lots of Sunfish and Bluegill and Longear that will readily take a scud Temps are increasing and Summer approaches, creek will start getting clobbered with the “green stuff” Rocks placed along the creek offer excellent access to the creek… weeds and high grass are cleared around them!

Pond Fishing with the Micro Fly Rod #microflyfishing #flyfishing

Sidetracked this past Sunday from fishing. Go figure – needed to fix a lawn sprinkler that broke, then had to fix two more that were leaking. Before starting this honey do, made a quick run to Lavon for a chance at White Bass on the point at Brockdale Park. Maybe should have fixed the sprinklers first, ended up striking out at Lavon. No worries, though, was good to get a cast or two to start the day. Plus, excited about a recent purchase of an Okuma Rockaway Surf Rod and a Pfleuger President Spinning Reel. More to come on the purchase! Luck would have it that I finished the honey do with lots of daylight to spare. Decided to flex the two piece micro fly rod and fish Celebration Park’s North Pond using a fresh tied Scud! Had a blast catching sunfish and bluegill. The micro fly rod did well… forgot how fun it is! PS: Long video… mentioned some adjustments made to the line strike indicator, diy leader/tipper setup, and added a demo snippet of the rod casting easily 12 yards des...

Quick trip with the Telescoping Micro Fly Rod

Image
Went kayak fishing yesterday on the local lake. Caught five Catfish using Shad on Juglines. Filleted them and cooked them blackened fish style. Tasty meal but still got a ways to go before the video is done; will get it posted soon as we can…. For now, did a quick trip with the Telescoping Micro Fly Rod trying to catch a small fish on a size 32 fly… correction size 28 fly! Bluegill took it, switched to a size 18 Griffiths Gnat and caught a Sunfish. Fun times, especially with a rod that fits conveniently in a pocket. Do stay tuned for more on yesterday’s kayak fishing video! For more on Micro Fly Rods, see “…Micro Fly Rod”

More Micro Fly Fishing Quick Trips! #microflyrod #microfishing

Image
Another quick trip with the Micro Fly Rod. This time to the feeder creek at Bethany Lakes for some fingerling bass. Caught one using the Marilyn Monroe Tenkara Fly. Did get a Bluegill on a GRHEN as well but did not get any video of the action. Had a number of small fish go for the little fishing flies but it seems the fishing flies were too big for their tiny mouths. No worries. Still a great time going fishing!

Micro Fly Rod Quick Trip This Round. #microflyrod

Image
Short on time but able to get a round in fly fishing at Celebration Park with the Micro Fly Rod! Mainly Sunfish and Bluegill on the Marilyn Monroe Tenkara Fly… Fun stuff!

Size 22 Griffith's Gnats... #flytying

Image
Decided to scale down the fishing fly size in preparation for the next round of micro fly fishing. Yesterday’s quick trip with the the Micro Fly Rod had lots of strikes but a size 16 was too much for the little fish to handle. This evening, tied a couple of Griffith’s gnats in size 22. Will see how these work; hopefully in the next day or two!

Nice Catfish on the Micro Fly Rod!

Image
Slow action this morning but did get a nice Catfish using the Micro Fly Rod! Started out fishing a Foam Grasshopper, then switched to a White Near Deere when we noticed the fish seemed to be lurking deeper. Fun stuff on ultralight fly fishing gear! PS: Posted picture on the Fishing Bulletin Board !

Out with the Two Weight!

Image
Having a little fun earlier this week catching little Bluegill and Sunfish on the 2-Weight Fly Rod at Bethany Lakes. Used a Near Deere to get the first fish in the Canal, then switched to Size 22 Midge to get the rest at the Waterfall. Lots of fun getting out during the week even for just a short while!

Micro Fly Rods!

Image
Fished several places Sunday for Rainbow Trout and struck out. Getting ready to call it a day, but decided it was too nice a day to stay indoors. On a whim, dusted off the Micro Fly Rods and went fishing for some “mini-Bruisers”. After changing fishing flies several times, found the pattern and the right size hook and started catching them! Even caught a pretty fingerling Bass! Had a great time on a really nice Texas evening catching these “mini-Bruisers” on micro fishing gear! Hope to try it again soon… still have components for another Wine Cork Micro Fly Rod; may get the “itch” to make another one!

Kiyotaki 18 and Micro Fly Fishing

Image
Headed out to Plano Saturday morning and fished the Davis Library Pond using the Kiyotaki 18 Rod and a Size 14 Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph. Had a mix of little Bluegill/Sunfish with a several larger ones that took the fishing fly as well. Been a while since we fished with the light Tenkara-style rod. Almost forgot how simple it was to fish with minimal gear. Had a fun time… later went back out in the afternoon and had more fun Micro Fly Fishing. Still working on the video; will post soon as it’s done. Stay tuned, hoping the underwater video shots can be used!
