Dry Flies at Waterloo This Round (Feb 15, 2015)

Image
Fun time in Denison today. Nuclaroche and I fished Waterloo Park Pond. After a lot of missed hook sets to rising trout feeding on little, black bugs, we figured out the pattern - a COAF Griffith's Gnat in Size 16! The Trout started out taking dry flies on a dead drift but as the wind picked up and the insects started "skittering" on the surface more, the Trout were wanting more movement on the dry fly. Fun day, especially being able to catch them on dry flies. Also, had lots of fun casting and catching fish using the COAF Micro Fly Rod !

Saturday Morning…? [1-03-2015]

Originally published January 3, 2015 Saturday morning... Looks like the rain is letting up. Checked the local ponds and noted water levels are up. Have not heard from the Team about the action at Bethany Lakes but will post an update as soon as they report in. That said, here is a picture showing the water is flowing at Bethany Creek Pond (just up the road from Bethany Lakes)! Water is flowing! PS: City of Denison is hosting a Trout Derby today at Waterloo Park Pond! For more info, go to the city's website.

Bethany Lakes in Allen Reports from the Team indicated the action Saturday morning was steady for some while slow for others. In the Team's case, one Rainbow Trout fell for an Olive Wooley Bugger at Bethany Lakes in Allen.  Key notes from the morning round were: Slow retrieve and/or stop and go retrieve seemed to work Casting spoons like Super Dupers in Gold and Silver and Mini-Jigs were getting strikes Bubble Fly Rig cast to fish feeding near the surface were getting strikes Fish were also taking PowerBait and PowerWorms Action was steady initially but tapered off with the exception of the Bubble Fly Rig. Action remained steady for the rig (see the section titled Bubble Fly Rig in the article "Texas Rainbow Trout Fishing - Community Lakes" ) Waterloo Park Pond in Denison Saturday afternoon the action picke...

iFishNews Fishing Podcast 11 - Denison Dam Observations

Image
Lucked out and was able to fish Denison Dam – tailrace to Lake Texoma, two days in a row. First day, temps were in the 90s and the river was flowing while they were generating power. Next day, cold front rolled in, dropping the temps to the 60s. No power generations, minimal water flow… able to observe what a difference a day makes – specifically, the river and the change in water level. Do listen in on the Podcast, or check out the video version on our YouTube Channel – COAF Field Team! (Podcast has migrated to the iFishNews Fishing Podcast Series - Click Link )

Dam Fishing - How we decide when and how to fish (Denison Dam)?

Image
A detailed video on how we decided when and how to fish a dam by finding the pattern… of the water flow based on real time release data and generation schedules. Do check it out and do stay till the end to see who won the Paracord Fly Rod Tube Rack Give Away! Steps detailed n the video… Team decided to fish Denison Dam Saturday July 27, 2019 using fly fishing gear and spinning gear. Able to arrive at first light and catch a few small Striped Bass before they started generating power. Once they started generating, headed downstream and we managed to catch a Bass and a Gar, else no more Stripers. Overall a fun time on the Red River fishing Denison Dam! Striped Bass were caught with a crankbait Rattle Trap or a Clouser Minnow. Gar went for Shad; the Bass went for a Clouser Minnow!

Fishing Updates and Random Drawing - 12/21/18 Re-Broadcast

Image
Re-broadcast of our Facebook Live Session where we provided quick updates on fishing in our area, and then the random drawing for the four fishing flies we tied. Same ones we used on the Blue River, Turner Falls Park, and locally at Bethany Lakes in Allen and Waterloo Park Pond in Denison, TX! Do check out our Facebook Page @coaffieldteam for follow-on drawings of fishing flies we tied and used on local ponds, river, and lakes!

Steady Trout Fishing at Waterloo Sunday!

Image
Fished Waterloo Pond in Denison for Rainbow Trout on Sunday December 23, 2018. Tried catching them on the fly rod but no takers. Bite was steady but not the fast-paced action we normally see at the little pond. Fishing partner found the pattern using Ultralight Spinning Gear and one of simple PowerBait Rigs we use. Trout wanted Orange Trout Dough Bait in a Salmon Egg scent. Did bring the Water Wolf Camera and got some underwater footage of the trout to include one that we were able to hook and land. Really nice day with lots of sun although the wind kicked up on us; no worries,… bundled up well. Trout were striking and running in on us. Had lots of missed hook sets but we did manage to limit out! Fun stuff! Till later, Good Luck and Good Fishing, and… MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Quick Stop at Bethany Friday, then to Waterloo... #troutfishing

Image
Missed seeing the trout being released at Bethany Friday, but was able to stop by and check things out. Trout are there, saw a few caught, but was not able to fish. When we were able, decided to make the run up the road to Denison and fish Waterloo Park Pond! Limited out using Near Deere, did some catch and release, but then had to catch the last one to keep using a Super Duper. Overall, a great time!

Propser, Denison, and Murphy Trout Derbies this Saturday!

Been working the day job and have been out of pocket. May be out of pocket Saturday as well. Bummer… three trout derbies are scheduled this Saturday! Frontier Park in Prosper Waterloo Park Pond in Denison Murphy City Complex Pond in Murphy If in the area, do give it a try!

COAF Field Team Vlog #30 – Black Near Deere to Limit Out at Waterloo! #troutfishing #flyfishing

Image
Made it to Waterloo in Denison Saturday afternoon. Fished the late afternoon/early evening bite and managed to limit out after getting a fishing tip from one of our Readers and good friend – Merovingian! Started with a Tandem Rigged Olive Near Deere and trailing GRHEN. Had some light strikes and misses, and then changed to a Black Near Deere when Merovingian gave us the heads up that the trout were going for Black Wooley Buggers. In short order, had a trout on the line using a 6-12 count to sink the fishing fly, and then a 6 count retrieve using long pulls. Bite was light and setting the hook at any movement or hesitation in the line was the key to hook ups… good practice for Beavers Bend and the Lower Mountain Fork! Did lose the one Black Near Deere in the fly box but luckily, they were hitting a Purple Near Deere as well. Also, the trout seemed to be more active as the afternoon edged into the early evening with hook ups happening at the pull of the line. Overall, a great ...

COAF Field Team Vlog #29 – Two Limits at Waterloo This Round! #troutfishing #flyfishing

Image
Took a little but found the pattern at Waterloo Park Pond in Denison. After trying a Near Deere and trailing GRHEN as well as several other patterns, went with a COAF Griffith’s Gnat when we saw lots of surface activity. Noticed on several trips to Waterloo in the past that trout were feeding on something just below the surface. Key was to use a Black Midge or Griffith’s Gnat fished wet and in the right size – size 16 in today’s instance; else, the trout ignored the fishing fly! Also, our fishing buddy managed to limit out using a Gold Super Duper. Started with a Silver Super Duper, and then the pink inline spinner we used at Heritage Park in Flower Mound earlier this month. Neither got a strike. Put on the Gold Super Duper; no strikes either for about an hour, and then they started biting! Cold and slight misty rain but all was good with ten in the creel!

One More Round at Waterloo!

Image
2015-2016 Trout Stocking Season is nearing an end. Decided to make one more trip to Waterloo for Rainbow Trout. Was able to limit out using a Tandem Rig – Near Deere and Griffiths Gnat before the wind kicked up. Left them biting but had to work hard for the last one.

Wow... Another Trout Derby this Weekend!

Posted earlier that Prosper was hosting a Trout Derby; looks like Denison is hosting one too! Two places for a chance at Trout! Looks like Denison has a Trout Derby too! #troutfishing https://t.co/tC79rpJTNS pic.twitter.com/C9ZZWBghfX — StockerTroutFishing (@iFishRadio) February 26, 2016

A Bass at Bethany, then Trout at Waterloo

Image
Fished Bethany Lakes this morning in hopes of Trout. Much warmer day and was anticipating some good action. However, that was not the case. Ended up catching a Bass on an Olive Near Deere. Did have on Trout take a COAF Griffith’s Gnat but just could not set the hook in time. Having struck out on Trout and in need of a Trout Fishing “fix”, decided to head to Denison and fish Waterloo for Trout. Took a fishing buddy and in short order we limited out! One limit using Silver or Gold Super Dupers. Other limit using an Olive Near Deere! Not a bad day especially on a warm December day!
