Back to Murphy City Hall Pond This Round (Feb 22, 2015)

Image
Made it back to Murphy City Hall Pond before the front arrived. Used an Olive/Brown Near Deere, PowerBait, and a Super Duper to limit out! Fishing Buddy hooked up with three on PowerBait, one on a Black Super Duper, and one on an Olive/Brown Near Deere. I took a limit on the fly with an Olive/Brown Near Deere. Saw others hooking up as well! Not sure what they were using but the Trout were biting! Now it's time to bundle up and prepare for the colder temps and freezing conditions.

Tough Round at Frisco Saturday (Feb 15, 2015)

Image
Late start Saturday for Nuclaroche and I. We planned to fish Frisco Commons for Rainbow Trout that morning but I was sidetracked by work and then some early "Spring" cleaning of the office. By the time all was done, it was late afternoon. Around 4PM, we made it to Frisco and fished till after sunset. Nuclaroche hooked up with one Rainbow Trout using PowerBait. I stuck with different dry flies trying to hook the Trout that were rising on the surface, and then eventually switched to the Micro Fly Rod . A quick check to match the hatch did not help either. I had caught one of the bugs flying around, and then tried several fishing flies that looked like it. No luck! Still had fun catching little Bluegill on the Micro Fly Rod!

The Day Before... Bethany Lakes Trout Stocking [12-14-2014]

[Originally Posted 12-14-2014] It's the day before the annual rainbow trout stocking at Bethany Lakes in Allen. The Team is anxious to wet a line and hook a little Stocker Trout! However,  this year the Team will miss tomorrow's fun as they will be attending a graduation ceremony back at Aggieland. The Team will  be in full force in College Station to be sure it is no hoax but one of own is graduating! That said, for those able to make it tomorrow, the Team suggested posting the video from last year's opening day at Bethany. The video is posted below; do check it out.  Key items from that day were: PowerBait worked initially but the action slowed but remained steady Gold Super Duper on a steady retrieve did not work Gold Super Duper on a stop and go retrieve worked Trout tended to strike as the lure fluttered down while stopped Also, last year the weather was sunny and cool; this year it looks like rain and overcast conditions are expected. Not sure how it will affect the...

YouTube Shorts | Trout Fishing | Corn vs Powerbait?

More fun collating past trips into the YouTube Shorts video format. This one was a fun trip to a small pond stocked with trout. Decided to fish corn and Powerbait to see which bait the trout liked. Lesson learned… Bring both! Added it to the COAF Shorts playlist – check it out!

Texas Rainbow Trout Fishing | Two Plus One Tips for this Stocking Season

Image
No fishing today, but made time to post two fishing tips that may of interest for those fishing the Texas Rainbow Trout Winter Stocking this season, and then we added one more that applies more to the warmer fishing season. First tip is on the Adjusta Bubble we like using for our Bubble Fly Rigs. Issue we have is when trying to thread the fishing line through the rubber stop, the line tends to curve and as a result it hangs up on the rubber. Easy fix… “spin it”! Spin the Adjusta Bubble as you thread the fishing line. Second tip is modifying the PowerBait Rig we mention in our article – “PowerBait Fishing Rigs for Rainbow Trout” . Specifically, Trout Fishing Rig #2 that is similar to a Carolina Rig. We skip the slip swivel and use 30lbs Dacron backing tied on to the fishing line with a slip bobber knot and some Superglue. The Plus One tip is reposting the “Making My Senkos Last Longer with Superglue” video to explain why we have Superglue in our...

GoPro Underwater Video Take3 - Limited out Trout Fishing at Waterloo!

Image
Made the run up to Waterloo in Denison for trout fishing fun. Trout Derby was held the day before, so lots of trout to be had in the little pond. Brought the GoPro Underwater Video rig for another try at action shots of trout. Was a tough go with murkly water and lots of vegetation on the bottom to clobber the rig. Luckily, after making more mods on the fly, did get some video of the trout lurking in the pond. Key Take Aways: Green vegetation is thick on the bottom; best to use a Carolina Rig with 16″ to 18″ of leader from the weight to the hook. Use a bait that floats to keep it above the vegetation when Carolina Rigged. Else, use a bobber and suspend off the bottom. At one point, the trout wanted Corn but were not striking if on the bottom. Used a PowerBait Nugget threaded above the hook, and then bait the hook with corn. This allowed the Corn to stay off the bottom and in the “money” zone where the trout were lurking! Of the trout caught today, two went for Po...

Gone Fishin'... "slack line" technique #waterlooparkpond #denison

Image
Cold and windy Sunday – Christmas Eve… what did we do? Went fishing for trout at Waterloo Park Pond in Denison. Tried catching them with our fly rods but no go, trout were not taking fishing flies or lures. They did not want corn or salmon eggs. The key today was Power Bait – Rainbow Glitter Dough Bait and Pink Trout Nuggets, fished using either a Carolina Rig or the simple split shot and hook rig we use when our hands are cold. (for more on the rigs we use, see our article, “ Power Bait Fishing Rigs for Rainbow Trout “. Temps were in the 30s and climbed up to low 40s but the wind was killer and we did not bring gloves. In short order, we went to the “don’t hold the rod because we need to keep our hands in our pocket slack line technique”. Three of us fished, three of us limited out… one limited in 30″, yours truly limited in an hour, and the last one limited out in an hour and a half. Overall, had a great time on a cold and wi...

Two Limits at Prosper

Image
Started the day fishing for Bass using Bait Casting Gear and Senkos in the morning. Switched to fishing for Trout using Fly Fishing Gear and Ultralight Spinning Gear. Only had one Trout go for a Near Deere Fishing Fly. Watched NucLaroche take a limit using PowerBait and the Ultralight, so followed his lead and switched to PowerBait and an Ultralight. Managed to limit out soon after but had to make an adjustment to timing the hook set. Noticed the Trout tended to pickup and mouth the bait, so attempting to set the hook on the initial pickup resulted in pulling the bait out of the Trout mouth. Overall, a great day to be outside fishing!

Two On a Fly, Then Three on PowerBait This Round...

Fished Frisco Commons Pond today. Limited out but had a tough time catching them on fishing flies. Used the same rig as yesterday – Tandem Rig Near Deere and GRHEN. Managed to catch two that went for the GRHEN. Had a few more missed strikes, else no luck getting another one with the Fly Rod. Switched to a Spinning Rod and PowerBait. Caught three Trout in short order. Since the day was so nice and calm conditions, decided to try some Micro Fishing as well. Was hoping to catch a Trout using the Micro Fly Rod but the Trout were not going for fishing flies. Luckily a couple of Bluegill and a little Bass were… will post a video of the Micro Fishing action at Frisco Commons and the Feeder Creek at Bethany in another Blog post. Below is the video of the Trout action today.
