Tough Round at Frisco Saturday (Feb 15, 2015)

Image
Late start Saturday for Nuclaroche and I. We planned to fish Frisco Commons for Rainbow Trout that morning but I was sidetracked by work and then some early "Spring" cleaning of the office. By the time all was done, it was late afternoon. Around 4PM, we made it to Frisco and fished till after sunset. Nuclaroche hooked up with one Rainbow Trout using PowerBait. I stuck with different dry flies trying to hook the Trout that were rising on the surface, and then eventually switched to the Micro Fly Rod . A quick check to match the hatch did not help either. I had caught one of the bugs flying around, and then tried several fishing flies that looked like it. No luck! Still had fun catching little Bluegill on the Micro Fly Rod!

Two On a Fly, Then Three on PowerBait This Round... (Feb 8, 2015)

Image
Fished Frisco Commons Pond today. Limited out but had a tough time catching them on fishing flies. Used the same rig as yesterday - Tandem Rig Near Deere and GRHEN. Managed to catch two that went for the GRHEN. Had a few more missed strikes, else no luck getting another one with the Fly Rod. Switched to a Spinning Rod and PowerBait. Caught three Trout in short order.  Since the day was so nice and calm conditions, decided to try some Micro Fishing as well. Was hoping to catch a Trout using the Micro Fly Rod but the Trout were not going for fishing flies. Luckily a couple of Bluegill and a little Bass were... will post a video of the Micro Fishing action at Frisco Commons and the Feeder Creek at Bethany in another Blog post.  Below is the video of the Trout action today.

Texas Rainbow Trout Fishing | Ultralight BFS Fishing for Trout with 1/16oz Roostertails

Image
Rain delay has us sidetracked but was able to make it Saturday afternoon for a round of Texas Rainbow Trout fishing BFS Fishing style – Bait Finesse Systems fishing, at Frisco Commons Pond. Went with ultralight gear that included the Kastking Zephyr BFS Reel, Berkley Lightning Rod, and 1/16oz Roostertails! Trout were active and did manage to catch three trout for dinner. Reel is casting nicely plus keeping only 100 feet of line on the reel helps with clearing backlashes as yours truly re-educates his thumb to baitcasting again! Trout were active and did manage to catch three trout for dinner. Fun stuff!

Near Deere Limited Out Trout Fishing #friscocommons #flyfishing

Image
Was not sure if we would make it to Frisco to fish the Commons Pond for stocked trout. Luckily, there was a break in the weekend events. Made the short run Saturday from Allen to Frisco and fished Frisco Commons Pond for rainbow trout. Recently stocked as well as the annual Trick-A-Trout Derby was held that morning, the pond was crowded. Luckily, the bite was on! Able to limit out fishing an Olive Near Deere set 3′ under a strike indicator. No need to retrieve the fishing fly after casting. Instead, let the wind and waves move the strike indicator and let your rig drift with the wind. Watch for the strike, and set the hook! Anticipating the crowd, swapped the Hydros Fly Reel with the Echo Ion Reel that was lined with the Rio Trout Max Skagit Head. Made for ease of casting for distance despite the wind and a shortened backcast due to people all around! Video shows the action on Saturday, and then summarizes Sunday’s action… was able to fish Sunday morning before it started r...

Saturday Fishing at Frisco Commons #flyfishing

Had planned to fish Towne Lake in Mckinney but the stocking was postponed due to weather. Things cleared up and made the run to Frisco Commons and fished for trout. Like in years past, something was hatching. Managed to land four and miss several others using a Griffith’s Gnat and a PMC Emerger. See how to tie one at  PMC Emerger

Frisco Commons with the Switch Rod and KDM Fishing Fly... Plus One! #flyfishing #fishingaddiction #switchrod

Image
Fun time yesterday fishing the Switch Rod and “testing” a new pattern – the Krystal Dub Minnow or KDM. Simple pattern made with UV pearl dubbing and saddle hackles; uses a dubbing loop to wrap the dubbing around the hook. Been a while since we used a dubbing loop, but quickly remembered how to use it. KDM cast well with the Switch Rod, and could be seen from a distance in the Frisco Commons Pond. Water was clear, could see a number of Bluegill chase the KDM. Also, had several Bass go for it as well. No Bruisers but did see some bigger then the ones we caught! Fun stuff… even got video of a Bass missing what looked like a butterfly hovering over the water’s surface!

Only One This Round.... #flyfishing

Only one trout this morning at Frisco Commons Pond. Windy conditions and warm temps but others were hooking up with the stocker trout! For your’s truly, the one went for a PMC Emerger, but did lose several missed strikes. Fun time still! Only one #trout this round at #friscocommons …still good to get out. Went for a #pmcemerger #flyfishing A video posted by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on Feb 12, 2017 at 9:53am PST Log Book Entry: 2/12/17 Location: Frisco Commons Park Pond (Frisco) Time: 08:30 – 10:30 Weax: Clear, “Sweater”, Windy (wind advisory posted) Rod: Redington Classic Trout 5wt – 9′ Reel: Echo Ion 4/5 – 6wt Flyline   Comments: Had several strikes with the Black Near Deere but missed the hook set. Also, missed strikes with the PMC Emerger but finally landed one. Saw others doing well with silver colored lures, Power Bait, and Wooley Buggers. Crowded and windy conditions made things tough but fish were there and biting steadily. Landed: 1 Rainbow...

COAF Field Team Vlog #33 - Frisco Commons for Trout This Round! #flyfishing

Fished Frisco Commons Pond in Frisco today; steady action on Near Deere. Was able to limit out on Trout. Even caught an albino and two Bass as well. Lots of fun despite windy conditions and warm temps; enjoyed a little catch and release fishing while practicing casting in windy conditions. Did see a number of fish taken with Silver Super Dupers, Kastmasters, and White Rooster Tails and the old standby Power Bait. Also, met a couple of Readers of our blog today; great to meet ya’ll and hoped the bite was on today for you Log Book Entry: 2/11/17 Location: Bethany Lakes – Main Pond (Frisco) Time: 12:00 – 14:00 Weax: Clear, “Short Sleeves”, Breezy Rod: Redington Classic Trout 5wt – 9′ Reel: Echo Ion 4/5 – 6wt Flyline   Comments: Warm and windy and crowded but crowd was expected given the derby held that morning. Opted to fish the “pier” area to keep the wind behind us and take advantage of it for casting purposes. Trout were striking in a similar man...

Frisco for More Trout!

Image
Fished Frisco Commons Sunday for another chance at Rainbow Trout. Was able to limit out using the same Tandem Rigged Olive Near Deere and trailing Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph (GRHEN) that we used at Waterloo on Saturday. Steady action with strikes typically happening as we switched from a short pull and retrieve to a slow swing of the rod. Did get several to take the Olive Near Deere later in the early evening using a fast retrieve. Then, as the evening hatch started was able to get one to take a Size 22 Griffith’s Gnat! Fun stuff!

Frisco Commons On a Sunday Morning

Image
Change of pace… went up the road to Frisco and fished the Frisco Commons Pond. It’s the same pond that is stocked with Rainbow Trout during the Winter Trout Stocking Season. Have caught little Bass and Bluegill/Sunfish while fishing for Rainbow Trout in the Winter. Decided to see what was biting during the Summer. Started fishing around 8AM and kept at it till about 11AM-Noon. Water was clear, and we could see fish lurking in the “greenery” that was growing near the banks. Used a COAF Griffith’s Gnat, Near Deere, GRHEN, and Prince Nymph to catch Bass and Bleugill/Sunfish. No Bruisers but did see several nice size looking Bass swimming in the area as well as a few Tilapia! Heard there was Tilapia stocked in the pond during the warmer months so it made sense when we saw them! Had a fun time on nice Sunday morning! Another Round with the Micro Fly Rod

Image
After limiting out on Trout, decided to have another go with the Micro Fly Rod. Changed the fly line by using less backing line and more fly line. No knot to hang up on the rod guides, so I was able to get more distance on the cast. Caught two little Bluegill and one Bass on a Soft Hackle at Frisco Commons Pond. Then, took a break to get hydrated again. Sun came out in force today; even think the temps hit above 70 degrees. Much different than last years freezing conditions at this time. Later in the afternoon, fished the Feeder Creek at Bethany Lakes, Soft hackle had a few strikes but no hook ups. Switched to a Red Midge in Size 22 and hooked several soon after. Then, noticed  fish feeding on something on the surface. So, switched to a Size 22 BWO and ended up catching several more. So far, have been pleasantly surprised with the casting capability of the little rod. The cast is different compared to standard size fly rods; the back cast straightens quickly, so the forward cast is...

Tested Micro Fly Rod II, Then Went Trout Fishing

Image
Long week but was finally able to go fishing Saturday. Started out “testing” Micro Fly Rod II by doing some Micro Fishing at the Davis Library Pond. Rod worked well! I was able to catch little Bass and Bluegill as well as several larger Bluegill. I do plan to make adjustments to the fly line by using less backing and more fly line. The knot I tend to hang up as it passed through the rod guides. With the adjustment, should be able to see if the little rod can take on some of the Stocker Trout in the area! Afterwards, headed up the road to fish Frisco Commons Pond. The city hosted its Annual Trick-A-Trout Derby that morning, so Trout were freshly stocked in the pond! Windy day, so no chance to try the Micro Fly Rod without the fly line modification. But, was able to limit out with five Trout. Trout went for an Olive and White Near Deere, and then a BH GRHEN fished on a Tandem Rig in conjunction with the Near Deere.
