Kiyotaki 18 and Micro Fly Fishing

Image
Headed out to Plano Saturday morning and fished the Davis Library Pond using the Kiyotaki 18 Rod and a Size 14 Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph. Had a mix of little Bluegill/Sunfish with a several larger ones that took the fishing fly as well. Been a while since we fished with the light Tenkara-style rod. Almost forgot how simple it was to fish with minimal gear. Had a fun time… later went back out in the afternoon and had more fun Micro Fly Fishing. Still working on the video; will post soon as it’s done. Stay tuned, hoping the underwater video shots can be used! Only One This Round....

Image
Headed to Kroger Park after work this evening. Only had a short window to fish. Good thing… bite was slow! Only one this round – a Bluegill on a GRHEN. Water was cloudy and green. Lots of things growing in the water to clobber your lure. No worries; still had a great time getting away! Bream Getter Cabela's Fiberglass CGR Fly Rod Rooster Tail Inline Spinners Mepps Trout Kit

Fun with the Micro Fly Rod

Image
Fished Celebration Park’s North Pond this evening for about an hour. Noticed the water level was much lower compared to two months ago. Luckily, the fish were biting. They were little… perfect for the Micro Fly Rod and some Micro Fishing!

Quick Trip with the Near Deere

Image
Been a while since we fished Bethany Lakes. Decided to make it a quick trip yesterday and get a round of fishing in. Used a Four Weight Fly Rod and a Neare Deere. Missed a few, caught a few, mainly little Bass, Bluegill, and Sunfish. Still had a fun time. Even got some underwater video of fish lurking in the area we fished! Saturday's Fishing Action at Beavers Bend

Image
Here is the follow-up video from Saturday’s fishing trip to Beaver Bend State Park in Oklahoma. Was able to get an underwater shot of one fish lurking in the pool where we caught the 18″ Rainbow Trout Learned the camera works much better when it’s turned on Was able to get action shots of one fish that we lost when it threw the fishing fly Was able to get action shots of the two fish that were caught Although the second fish caught was smaller of the two, it took longer to land it due to several runs to the fast current The flood from earlier in the year damaged the area and changed key fishing areas but overall it was good to see the fish were still biting! Used a Five Weight Fly Rod/Reel and fished a Tandem Rigged Near Deere and trailing Prince Nymph. Worked several pools and runs along Spillway Creek. Hooked a couple of Trout but lost them shortly after when they threw the fishing fly. Also, hooked and landed two nice Rainbow Trout – 18″ and 15.5″ trout that put up a great fight (as

A Few Changes at Beavers Bend State Park

Image
Fished Beavers Bend State Park in Oklahoma Saturday; did a little looking around and captured video of some of the changes that have occurred due to the flood damage earlier this year. Evening Hole, Cold Hole, and Spillway Creek are much different than when we were here last year. Also, Lost Creek is definitely lost with minimal water flow and lots of debris to clobber the area. Word is that it will not be rebuilt. Regardless, the new areas are definitely fish-able! Managed to catch two nice Rainbow Trout! Picture posted below is one of the two. It went 18″ in size! Must plan on another trip before year end. PS: Still working on the fishing video from Saturday; hope to have it posted in the near future!

Beavers Bend State Park...

Giving it a try this Saturday. Tied some Near Deere and COAF Griffith’s Gnats. Let’s see if it works at Beavers Bend State Park, Oklahoma!

Near Deere at Plano East Senior High School

Image
Tied a couple of Near Deere and took them to Plano East Senior High School for a round of fishing. Was targeting Bass and Catfish; ended this round with Catfish and Bluegill! Caught two Catfish and three Bluegill fishing the Near Deere under a strike indicator. Good to fish with the Fly Rod/Reel again. Been having lots of fun kayak fishing but Trout Season is just around the corner! Fun stuff…. Catfish that went for a Near Deere!

Simple Fish Tail Mount Re-visited... Blacktip Shark from 2015 Galveston Road Trip!

Image
Had a blast on the Texas Gulf Coast last month. Fished Galveston and caught lots of fish including a 27 1/4″ Blacktip Shark from the 61st Fishing Pier! The shark fillets were tasty; even better, was able to “capture the moment” by re-visiting the Simple Fish Tail Mount  article to create a trophy of our shark! This time we added the jaws as well! Sure do miss the Coast already! Preparing the Mount What, where, and when! Every things in place…. Seaweed and shellac… Let it dry and it’s done!

Another Round at Little Ridge

Image
Decided to give it another try at Little Ridge this morning. More rough conditions but things calmed down later. Bite was slower compared to yesterday but then found them (White Bass) lurking in a cove. Calm water, out of the wind, and lots of feeding fish… multiple hook ups on the Sabiki Rig for White Bass ! Although undersized, the action was good with lots of fish chasing those that were already hooked! Did this for most of the morning, and then headed to the Power Plant and started working the area. No anchoring this time; instead, paddle to the boundary, cast the rig, then back paddle to remain out of the restricted area, and then set the hook when they strike. Caught more undersized White Bass this way. However, we did get one Keeper and a Catfish that went for the Slab! Fun stuff and a great workout, too! More White Bass on the Sabiki Rig!

Struck Out This Evening at Brockdale....

Image
White Bass were scarce this evening at Brockdale. Saw a few schools rising but no hook ups. Did see a few fish caught by others but they were undersized. Oh well, cannot catch them all! Still fun, still beats work, even got some good casting practice in. Had several backlashes to remind us that we still need to practice!

Kayak Fished Brockdale Park Saturday

Image
Put in at Brockdale Park Saturday afternoon and went kayak fishing. Was a late start but almost immediately after launching noticed lots of fish activity on the surface. Used Sabiki Rigged Tube Fishing Flies and a Slab initially; had no takers, so removed the Slab and switched to Tube Fishing Flies and Crappie Jigs. Soon after, hooked up with a fish! As it was a hot day, decided to take a water break. While doing so, set the rod down and let the lures bob up and down in the water as we drifted. Have done this often in the past. And, on occasion will get a fish to bite. Turned out, one did this time. So, just in case, tried it again and got another strike. Did this several more times with similar results – basically we were vertically jigging! Switched back to trolling and caught more undersized fish. Also, did some sight casting to boils that were happening frequently as well as more vertical jigging. Lost count of the number of fish caught and released. Did have one breakoff that felt
