Pond Fishing Fun on a 4WT Fly Rod

Image
Plan was to fish the local pond using Bait Finesse Gear and ultralight lures. Switched to a Fly Fishing when my inline spinner kept fouling on the algae. Started out with a Damsel Fly and had several strikes but no hook ups. Went to a Guadalupana in a smaller size hook compared to the Damsel Fly. Did better! Worked mainly the areas near the bank as the water level in the pond was high from recent rains. Did work a more open area in the back pond to see what was cruising the area. Caught most of the fish on a fast, short pull retrieve. Did get one Bass to take the Damsel Fly worked in its bed but as luck would have it, camera battery ran out. Fun times fly fishing with nine Bluegill and four Bass caught and released! Now if only the wind would calm down and we could get back to kayak fishing! Good luck and good fishing!

Micro Fly Rod Fishing | Two Piece Micro Fly Rod Quick Trip

Image
Was out this morning and had saw a chance to fish the feeder creek at the local pond. Good thing I keep the Micro Fly Rod handy… this one is the two piece micro fly rod made from a broken 8wt fly rod. Saw a nice bass in the culvert that runs from the feeder creek to the pond. Also, saw several smaller bass but none wanted to bite. Did lose a couple of Bluegill and land one Bluegill that went for the Guadalupana. Did call it quits… too cold, but just in time to miss the snow that came in shortly after!

Fishing Fly Give Away - Guadalupana... plus Kayak Fishing Preview

In this video, we randomly select the Fishing Fly Give Away Winner… winner gets two Guadalupana Fishing Flies tied on Size 8 Streamer Hooks. Also, went fishing yesterday on the local lake – Lake Lavon. Took the kayak out and caught and released a number of undersized White Bass. Did get four keepers – three White Bass and one Crappie. Do check back… will get a video out that shows the Back Paddling Technique we used to catch them this round! Fishing Fly Give Away – Guadalupana… plus Kayak Fishing Preview

More Fly Fishing with the Guadalupana plus Short Cast Fly Fishing!

Image
Fished Bethany Lakes Saturday morning. Able to get a round in before it rained. Planned to fish with the Tube Popper Fly; gave it about an hour with only three missed strikes to show for it. Then, put the Guadalupana on and caught fish – Bluegill, Sunfish, and Bass. Fished the Back Pond and left them biting. Went to the Lower Pond by the Waterfall and caught a Sunfish, then on to the Canal and fished Bluegill and Sunfish using a short cast – 10′ of line. Fish went for the Guadalupana consistently. But, Murphy’s Law struck; lost the fishing fly to a snag. Tied on the Marilyn Monroe Tenkara Fly; missed a few and hooked a few before losing it. Good thing… one more cast lasted another 30 casts and probably would have kept going if it weren’t for losing the fly. Bummer but did miss the rain storm! PS: Do check back on Monday for the Randomly Selected Winner of our Guadalupana Fishing Fly Give Away!

Fishing Fly Give Away - Guadalupana... #flyfishing

Image
For this round, we are switching it up and giving away two Guadalupana Fishing Flies – a variant of the original pattern. This one is tied smaller than the original and use two peacock herls instead of three. It has been effective on stocked trout when we fished local ponds during the TPWD Trout Stocking Season as well as the year round fishery on the Guadalupe River where the pattern originated. Do join us in this Fishing Fly Give Away! Simple Rules: Post a comment to this video US Mailing Address Valid Email to verify the winner Start: August 26, 2019 @8PM Central End: September 2, 2019 @8PM Central Winner to be announced September 2, randomly selected by the TubeBuddy random selection tool! Good Luck and Good Fishing!

Fly Fishing the Guadalupana at Bethany Lakes #fishing

Image
Tied Guadalupana Fishing Flies for the upcoming Fishing Fly Give Away. Giving two away and tied an extra one to “test” at the local pond. Caught one Sunfish, then lost it… user error, should have made sure the knot was secure. Fished a Foam Damsel Fly and caught more little Bluegill, then broke off on a fish… line was frayed. While looking for another fishing fly in the fly box, found another Guadalupana. Tied it on in short order and caught more Bluegill and a little Bass.

Guadalupana Does Well Again On Bass!

Image
Fly fishing for bass at a local pond using the Guadalupana. Did well last round; same held true this round! Bass were in their beds or cruising the shallows. Also, caught several Bluegill. Did try a popper but the Bass were not interested. Also, Bass on their beds were selective or better yet “picky” when it came to striking even when the Guadalupana was worked across their beds! Fun times on a really nice day; even better to be fishing and catching them on the fly!

Quick Tie Guadalupana #flytying #guadalupana

Image
Here is a quick tie demo of how we tie the Guadalupana. Uses minimal material, and is simple to tie. Works on trout, bass, and bluegill. Do give it a try, and do keep guessing on our Fishing Fly Give Away of two Guadalupana fishing flies. One tied with a Palmer Hackle. Other with a Dry Fly Hackle. Both on size 8 streamer hooks. See more and comment in our video posted on our channel! PS: Do see more details on how to tie the pattern at COAF Guadalupana Fishing Fly.

DIY Tube Popper Fly #flytying #popper

Image
Finally got the video edited… it’s the DIY Tube Popper Fly that we used the other day at Stoney Hollow Pond. The version we used at the pond was painted yellow. These are painted white. (This one is a variant of an earlier one we tied… Tube Popper Fly). Also, used the Mini-Balsa Wood Lathe we made several years ago along with a tube tying attachment on an old vise we keep just for making tube flies. Lathe is not required, can be shaped by had using hand tools and sand paper. Do check it out and give it a try fishing them on your local ponds this Season! Material List for reference: 1/4″ square balsa wood Paint – Red, White, Yellow UV Glue Pen Super Glue Sandpaper Xacto Saw / Mitre Box Mini-Lathe for Balsa Wood Dacron Tying Thread Marabou Plumes Grizzly Hackle Tubing Tube Fly Tying Attachment Treble Hooks

Finding the Pattern Fly Fishing Kroger Park ... #Guadalupana Give Away

Image
Was trying to catch fish at Kroger park, specifically, Bass using the Tube Popper Fly that worked well at Stoney Hollow Pond. Switched to a Damsel Fly Variant when it did not work, then switched back to the Tube Popper Fly. No luck there, so went with a Guadalupana… it worked. Do check out the video for tips and an idea on the retrieve we used when working the Guadalupana. Liked the fishing fly but did lose two Bass that threw the hook out after the initial hook set. Decided to tie Guadalupanas to replace the one lost this trip. Then, decided to give away two of them instead of the Near Deere Give Away for this month! This Give Away… We picked a number between 1 and 200! First to guess the number, and with a US mailing address… WINS! This Give Away are two Guadalupana… in Size 8. Size 8 to better hook Bass instead of the size 10 we used. One Guadalupana has its hackle tied Palmer style. The other Guadalupana has hackles tied Dry Fly style. One guess per day… just post in the comments o...

Out and About Sunday Morning Pond Fishing! #coaffieldteam

Image
[UPDATE: Added the video of the evening round below and a link to google maps. Pond is in Fairview on Fairview Parkway.] Started Sunday morning with a swing and miss at the “Pond Behind In-N-Out Burger”. Tried the usual spots without a strike, but did see a nice Bass along the bank… that is, did spook a nice Bass! Windy and cold but not ready to call it a morning, decided to move to another spot just down the road… it’s the pond along Angel Parkway. Forgot its name; calling Angel Parkway Pond for ease of reference. Windy and cold still, did not plan to fish for long. But, then got a bite on the PMOT… turned out to be a nice Bluegill! Stuck it out for longer, even after losing the PMOT… snapped it off while casting. Switched to a Muddler Minnow, hoping for a repeat like yesterday where a Bass took it as it was “sputtering” just under the water’s surface. No luck! Was about ready to head home, but decided on “one more cast...

Lost Maples State Park Report.... #troutfishing

Image
Received a report from one of our Readers who fished Lost Maples State Park today and despite the cold and windy conditions, a limit of trout was had! One went for an Olive Near Deere and two went for a Guadalupana. The remainder went for a gold Panther Martin spinner. Great report!   #flytying #fishingflies this evening. went with a #guadalupana and two #neardeere to make a sample set! Only One On The Blue River Plus a Road Trip Song? #blueriver #troutfishing

Image
Was a tough round on the Blue River today. Saw others catching trout; yours truly struggled, but did finally land one – a small stocker. That said, had a great time on the river, even put a song together inspired while on the road to the Blue… Blue River not Blue Bayou that is. Morning was chilly but things warmed up later… maybe too hot for trout fishing? Also, the wind kicked up as well. Luckily, was able to gain even more distance with the OPST Commando Head on the 9′ 5wt. Still need more practice and did switch to a floating tip in lieu of the sinking tip so as to fish a tandem rig under a strike indicator. Next round, hope to get more than one trout, but till then we hope the “road trip inspired” song / video “inspires others to fish Lady Blue!

Eagle's Nest "aka In-N-Out Burger" Pond...! #switchrod #flyfishing

Image
Decided to try another pond that we have not fished for some time. This time went to the pond behind In-N-Out Burger in Allen. It’s formal name is Eagles Nest Catch and Release Pond but we like to call it In-N-Out Pond for ease of reference. Brought the six weight Switch Rod this time, and fished Damsel Flies and a Guadalupana to catch Bass and Bluegill. Would have kept fishing Damsel Flies but lost what we brought with us to snags. Fun time… also, added a short snippet of the ponds along the Village Trail that runs between Allen and Fairview. There are three and all hold fish, just no Bruisers caught by us for some time now. Gear used:  Lamson Liquid 4 Fly Reel ,  Rio Switch InTouch Chucker Line #5 , and Cabelas TLR Switch Rod (11′-4pc-6wt / Model TLR-1106-4)

Mixed Bag This Evening at Bethany Lakes!

Fished Bethany this evening and caught a mixed bag of Bass, Bluegill, Sunfish, and a Shellcracker. Used a Guadalupana, a Foam Grasshopper, a Damsel Fly, and a PMC Emerger Variant to catch them this round! Fun stuff.. pics and a short snipped of one of the Bass and the Shellcracker begin caught! #flyfishing this evening. Quick Trip to Bethany Lakes ... Feeder Creek! #flyfishing

Image
Fished Bethany Lakes on a quick trip using fly fishing gear to test a new pattern – Near Guad. It’s a combination of the Near Deere and the Guadalupana. Had one Bass look at it, else no takers. Switched to a smaller Guadalupana and caught a Sunfish and a Bluegill, then put on a Griffith’s Gnat and caught several more… fun time!   Log Book Entry: 3/08/17 Location: Bethany Lakes – Feeder Creek (Allen) Time: 18:00 – 18:45 Weax: Clear, “Long Sleeve”, Calm Rod: Redington Classic Trout 5wt – 9′ Reel: Echo Ion 4/5 – 6wt Flyline   Comments: Fished the Back Pond and had one Bass follow the Near Guad. But, it did not take it. Moved to the Feeder Creek and caught a Sunfish and Bluegill on a Guadalupana. Later, changed the fishing fly to a Griffith’s Gnat as there were a number of strikes but no solid hook ups. Caught several more Sunfish and Bluegill with the Griffith’s Gnat. Fished a little after dark and left them biting!   Lan...

Dry Fly Hackle Wrap Works Well with Near Deere Too!

More fly tying this evening with two more Guadalupana to add to the others. While tying them, decided to tie a couple of Near Deere using the same Dry Fly Hackle Wrap as the Guadalupana. Looks good, may have to sneak away tomorrow and try them on trout at one of the recently stocked ponds in our area!   Been using the dry fly hackle wrap #flytying #guadalupana #fishingflies …decided to try it on #neardeere …looked good. Now gotta fish them! A post shared by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on Mar 3, 2017 at 6:05pm PST

More Guadalupana Fishing Flies...! #flytying

Busy work day; no fishing but did get a couple more Guadalupanas tied to add to the others! That said, the weekend is near and the Team is still uncertain where to fish. Will be playing it by ear but next weekend, TRWD Flyfest is next Saturday. Looking really good that we will be there! Fun times to be had!   More #flytying #guadalupana #fishingflies this evening. Adding to the others tied the other day! A post shared by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on Mar 2, 2017 at 9:11pm PST

Can't Catch Them All...

Quick trip to Murphy City Complex Pond for a go at trout. Had one on the line but lost it using a PMC Emerger. Else, had one Sunfish go for a Guadalupana to save us from striking out. No worries, still a good time fishing!   Can’t catch them all. #flyfishing quick trip gets one #sunfish on a #guadalupana …did get a #trout on the line but lost it while bring it in. Back to Murphy for More Trout This Sunday Morning! #flyfishing #guadalupana

Image
Had a great time yesterday fishing Murphy City Complex Pond for trout. Went back again today with the same setup… Redington Pursuit 4wt-8′ fly rod and Ross Flystart Model 2. Used a size 14 Guadalupana to take a limit today! Fun stuff!     Log Book Entry: 2/26/17 Location: Murphy City Complex Pond (Murphy) Time: 07:30 – 08:30 Weax: Clear, “Sweater & Under Armour”, Slight Breeze Rod: Redington Pursuit 4wt – 8′ Reel: Ross Flystart Model 2 – 4wt Flyline   Comments: Lots of fishermen on arrival at the pond with a good number fly fishing! Action was steady with Super Dupers continuing to produce for spin fishermen. Guadalupana (as well as Wooley Buggers) did well for fly fishermen. Not able to determine bait preferences but it looked like limits were being taken by bait fishermen. Corn, Trout Worms, and Power Bait worked well at yesterday’s derby. Suspect the same held true this round.   Landed: 14 Rainbow Trout – 9″-12″ ...
