Can't Catch Them All...

Quick trip to Murphy City Complex Pond for a go at trout. Had one on the line but lost it using a PMC Emerger. Else, had one Sunfish go for a Guadalupana to save us from striking out. No worries, still a good time fishing!   Can’t catch them all. #flyfishing quick trip gets one #sunfish on a #guadalupana …did get a #trout on the line but lost it while bring it in. Back to Murphy for More Trout This Sunday Morning! #flyfishing #guadalupana

Image
Had a great time yesterday fishing Murphy City Complex Pond for trout. Went back again today with the same setup… Redington Pursuit 4wt-8′ fly rod and Ross Flystart Model 2. Used a size 14 Guadalupana to take a limit today! Fun stuff!     Log Book Entry: 2/26/17 Location: Murphy City Complex Pond (Murphy) Time: 07:30 – 08:30 Weax: Clear, “Sweater & Under Armour”, Slight Breeze Rod: Redington Pursuit 4wt – 8′ Reel: Ross Flystart Model 2 – 4wt Flyline   Comments: Lots of fishermen on arrival at the pond with a good number fly fishing! Action was steady with Super Dupers continuing to produce for spin fishermen. Guadalupana (as well as Wooley Buggers) did well for fly fishermen. Not able to determine bait preferences but it looked like limits were being taken by bait fishermen. Corn, Trout Worms, and Power Bait worked well at yesterday’s derby. Suspect the same held true this round.   Landed: 14 Rainbow Trout – 9″-12″ ...

Murphy for Trout This Round! #guadalupana #flyfishing

Made it to Murphy today after the Trout Derby. Limited out using the Guadalupana in size 12 and 14. Also, had fun catching and releasing them! If able, may try another round tomorrow – Sunday morning!   Log Book Entry: 2/25/17 Location: Murphy City Complex Pond – Main Pond (Murphy) Time: 11:30 – 15:00 Weax: Clear, “Long Sleeves”, Slight Breeze Rod: Redington Pursuit 4wt – 8′ Reel: Ross Flystart Model 2 – 4wt Flyline   Comments: Derby was wrapping up on arrival; looked like a number of limits were taken using Power Bait, Trout Worms, and Corn. Also noted the Super Duper in Gold and Silver were getting lots of strikes! Delayed counted, followed by a fast retrieve was working for Super Dupers. Later, it looked like a slower retrieve was preferred. Guadalupana was the go to fly again. Trout were striking on a slow retrieve and/or no retrieve at first. Later, a 6-12 count delay, then a fast retrieve was preferred. Then, a stop and go retrieve like we used at...

Towne Lake Sunday Morning for Trout! #flyfishing #switchrod

Image
Been out of pocket this week; last round of fishing was the day after the Satruday’s Trout Derby in Mckinney. Fished Towne Lake with Cabelas TLR Switch Rod and Guadalupanas! Limited out with five as well as did some catch and release fishing, too! Was hoping to make it back out there this week, but as our day jobs conflicted it was not a go. This Saturday there may be a slim chance to hit on of the three ponds hosting derbies – Prosper, Denison, or Murphy… gotta hit one at least! Log Book Entry: 2/19/17 Location: Towne Lake (Mckinney) Time: 07:30 – 10:00 Weax: Overcast, “Long Sleeves”, Calm Rod: Cabelas TLR Switch Rod 6wt – 11′ Reel: Lamson Liquid 4 – Rio Switch Chucker with Versitip Leader (F)   Comments: Busy on arrival with lots of fishermen catching trout on various baits and lures. Of note, were corn and trout worms! The Game Warden was checking licenses; checked mine with no issues. Even asked for website URL. Gladly provided by taking a pi...

Saturday at Towne Lake for Trout! #flyfishing

Checked out the Trout Derby at Towne Lake in Mckinney Saturday! Lots of fun …trophies were presented, prizes were won, and trout were caught. 6,000 trout were released in the sectioned off area, so the chance at catching a trout were high after the derby. Managed to get a limit plus some catch and release fishing with the Switch Rod! Went back this morning, and limited out again. Will get a video posted at a later date. For now, do check out Saturday’s action at Towne Lake! PS: Howdy to Fred; was great meeting one of our Readers while out in the field! Log Book Entry: 2/18/17 Location: Towne Lake (Mckinney) Time: 12:00 – 16:00 Weax: Clear, short sleeve, breezy Rod: Cabelas TLR Switch Rod 6wt – 11′ Reel: Lamson Liquid 4 – Rio Switch Chucker (#5 – 370gr) with Versitip Leader (Floating) Comments: Checked the trout derby out but did not fish; opted to wait till later once the crowd cleared to allow room for casting the switch rod. Good News, Bad News.... #flyfishing

Good news at Towne Lake in Mckinney. Limited out on trout! Lots of folks at the derby; have video to edit but that can wait. Bad news… ran out of Guadalupanas – was the fishing fly they were hitting on for us. Slow retrieve and light strikes but did see others doing well on other lures and baits!   Good news, bad news #flyfishing today. Limited out on #trout but ran out of the fly that was gettimg them! #guadalupana #fishingflies A post shared by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on Feb 18, 2017 at 3:05pm PST

Fly Tying This Evening... #flytying

Did some fly tying this evening in preparation for tomorrow. Hope to see if these fishing flies produce. Opted for Near Deer, variants of the Guadalupana, and a PMC Emerger variant – the PMC GNE! Hope they work on the trout!   #flytying this evening… opted for #neardeere #guadalupana and #pmcemerger variant! Hope they work #flyfishing for #trout tomorrow! Towne Lake Trout Derby in Mckinney Saturday. #troutderbies

Image
The city of Mckinney is hosting a trout derby this Saturday. Looks like 5,000 trout to be stocked at Towne Lake. For details, check it out at  http://www.mckinneytexas.org/parksevents ! Can get crowded but is still lots of fun. Below is a playlist of videos from the past few years. Also, one year they had trophies for adult participants to include the smallest trout caught. Your’s truly won the Third Smallest Trout category. Fun time with hot dogs and donuts too as well as prizes for the kids!

COAF Guadalupana #flytying

Image
While fishing in Frisco this past weekend, we met one of our Readers who asked about the Guadalupana fishing fly that we used while fishing the Guadalupe River several seasons ago. Has been awhile since we tied one but we do recall it was an effective fishing fly for us, working on the trout on the Guadalupe River, stocker trout in our local ponds, and Bass in the Spring and Summer months. Having reminded us about the fishing fly, we decided to tie a couple. This round we used the dry fly hackle wrap instead of the palmer hackle wrap that we showed in our article, “COAF Guadalupana Fishing Fly” . Both work well in a given situation, but just in case, we like to have them both in our fly box! Do give them a try when you get a chance! Palmer Hackle Wrap

Only One This Round.... #flyfishing

Only one trout this morning at Frisco Commons Pond. Windy conditions and warm temps but others were hooking up with the stocker trout! For your’s truly, the one went for a PMC Emerger, but did lose several missed strikes. Fun time still! Only one #trout this round at #friscocommons …still good to get out. Went for a #pmcemerger #flyfishing A video posted by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on Feb 12, 2017 at 9:53am PST Log Book Entry: 2/12/17 Location: Frisco Commons Park Pond (Frisco) Time: 08:30 – 10:30 Weax: Clear, “Sweater”, Windy (wind advisory posted) Rod: Redington Classic Trout 5wt – 9′ Reel: Echo Ion 4/5 – 6wt Flyline   Comments: Had several strikes with the Black Near Deere but missed the hook set. Also, missed strikes with the PMC Emerger but finally landed one. Saw others doing well with silver colored lures, Power Bait, and Wooley Buggers. Crowded and windy conditions made things tough but fish were there and biting steadily. Landed: 1 Rainbow...

COAF Field Team Vlog #33 - Frisco Commons for Trout This Round! #flyfishing

Fished Frisco Commons Pond in Frisco today; steady action on Near Deere. Was able to limit out on Trout. Even caught an albino and two Bass as well. Lots of fun despite windy conditions and warm temps; enjoyed a little catch and release fishing while practicing casting in windy conditions. Did see a number of fish taken with Silver Super Dupers, Kastmasters, and White Rooster Tails and the old standby Power Bait. Also, met a couple of Readers of our blog today; great to meet ya’ll and hoped the bite was on today for you Log Book Entry: 2/11/17 Location: Bethany Lakes – Main Pond (Frisco) Time: 12:00 – 14:00 Weax: Clear, “Short Sleeves”, Breezy Rod: Redington Classic Trout 5wt – 9′ Reel: Echo Ion 4/5 – 6wt Flyline   Comments: Warm and windy and crowded but crowd was expected given the derby held that morning. Opted to fish the “pier” area to keep the wind behind us and take advantage of it for casting purposes. Trout were striking in a similar man...

Headed to Frisco... Good Luck and Good Fishing!

Been a tough go getting out and fishing this past week. Did check out Crowley Park in Richardson and Celebration Park. Also, made it out to Celebration Park today. Struck out at Crowley Park, caught a Golden Shiner at Celebration, and the two more today at Celebration. These quick trips will have to do for now but there is a Trout Derby in Frisco Saturday! Saw midges hatching and some fish going for them but the wind made it tough to fish dry flies. Switched to the Rainbow Midge and got several light strikes, and then hooked into two Golden Shiners!   Landed: Golden Shiner – 3″ – Rainbow Midge – Sz 16 Golden Shiner – 4″ – Rainbow Midge – Sz 16

This Guy is Funny...! #hankpatterson

Been stuck working the day job, so fishing has been on hold for a little bit… we hope! Luckily, been keeping the fishing withdrawals in check by surfing the Internet – specifically, the fishing action on YouTube. Found this one the other day – Hank Patterson, world renowned fly fishing expert and guide. Funny stuff!

Rainbow Midge by Turning Stones Fly Fishing... #flytying

Image
Been tying the Rainbow Midge using a traditional pattern. This one from Turning Stones Fly Fishing is much simpler. Going to try this version next time I tie Rainbow Midges! PS: Made a couple; very simple pattern and easy tie! #flytying #rainbowmidge pattern found online. Much simpler pattern than the #rainbowwarrior fly.
