Towne Lake Trout Derby in Mckinney Saturday. #troutderbies

The city of Mckinney is hosting a trout derby this Saturday. Looks like 5,000 trout to be stocked at Towne Lake. For details, check it out at http://www.mckinneytexas.org/parksevents! Can get crowded but is still lots of fun.

Below is a playlist of videos from the past few years. Also, one year they had trophies for adult participants to include the smallest trout caught. Your’s truly won the Third Smallest Trout category.

Fun time with hot dogs and donuts too as well as prizes for the kids!

Over-Lining Our Fly Rods

Not sure when we started doing this, but we tend to over-line (go up one line weight) on our 4-Wt and 5-Wt fly rods. I think we did this by accident when we used whatever fly line we had at the time we picked up a new fly reel. So far, have been good with the casting results by going up a weight. That said, was not aware of a debate about this, until I saw an article online by Field and Stream – “ Is Over-Lining Fly Rods Good or Bad? ” For the most part, would agree with Field and Stream that there are no set rules. Would go on to say, “whatever works best for you”!

Rainy Day Then Cleared Up... #

Rainy day, so did not plan to go fishing. Ran some errands and ended up having drinks at Mash’d in Plano. Fun time…even got a quick trip in at Bethany Lakes. Struck out but did get some great practice fly casting. For now, going to relive past fishing trips… in this case, kayak fishing on Texoma!   rain is gone, still no #fishing …bummed, but getting #mashed at #mashd …hee, hee! Bent Back Clouser Variant Worked!

Tested out a new pattern… a Bent Back Clouser Variant. This one uses a weighted keel instead of dumbbell eyes or bead chain, and the hook shank is bent back slightly. Worked well today at Sonic Pond! Tried it at Bethany Lakes, yesterday with some success. Today was much better. Used a larger hook and flashy chenille instead of flashy tinsel. Stay tuned for the fly tying demo on how to tie one!

Bass and Bluegill This Round

Tested out a new fly pattern – no name for it yet. Caught a Bass and lost a Bass, then switched to damsel flies and caught Bass, Bluegill, and Sunfish.  Will tweak the new fly pattern more, and “test” it out again. Was good to see lots of fish near shore in their beds. Looked like the bigger Bluegill were further out from shore this year. Regardless, makes for some good fly casting practice for distance… Fun stuff!

Great report from LMF! Mckinneycrappiecatcher: Re: Lower Mt Fork River - Fishing Guide Report with Video and Pictures This weekend was absolutely epic in beavers bend. cody (txpacker4) and I could only manage one walleye Friday night, but Saturday all heck broke loose, we caught smallies, spotted bass, trout, sandies, bluegill, and to top it off, a two man limit of both walleye and crappie.
