Towne Lake Sunday Morning for Trout! #flyfishing #switchrod

Been out of pocket this week; last round of fishing was the day after the Satruday’s Trout Derby in Mckinney. Fished Towne Lake with Cabelas TLR Switch Rod and Guadalupanas! Limited out with five as well as did some catch and release fishing, too! Was hoping to make it back out there this week, but as our day jobs conflicted it was not a go. This Saturday there may be a slim chance to hit on of the three ponds hosting derbies – Prosper, Denison, or Murphy… gotta hit one at least!

  • Time: 07:30 – 10:00
  • Weax: Overcast, “Long Sleeves”, Calm
  • Rod: Cabelas TLR Switch Rod 6wt – 11′
  • Reel: Lamson Liquid 4 – Rio Switch Chucker with Versitip Leader (F)

 

Comments:

  • Busy on arrival with lots of fishermen catching trout on various baits and lures. Of note, were corn and trout worms!
  • The Game Warden was checking licenses; checked mine with no issues. Even asked for website URL. Gladly provided by taking a picture of our StockerTroutFishing.com hat!
  • Action was good with consistent strikes using the delayed count and minimal movement fishing a Guadalupana. As the morning progressed, trout were actively feeding near the surface. Fast retrieve was preferred but action slowed down after about 30″. Delayed count and long pull retrieve were key then!

 

Landed:

  • 11 Rainbow Trout – 10″-12″ – Guadalupana – Sz 12

Was out fishing a local creek earlier this week. Caught a few Bluegill with the 2wt flyrod but was wanting for the tenkara rod as the creek was lined with brush and offered minimal access as well as casting room. Lots of roll casting and switch casting was the key. Unfortunately, lost the video… deleted it by accident. No worries, trip triggered your’s truly to search online for tenkara sales… and with luck, found Tenkara USA was offering a 30% discount on their rods. Nice! Noted the Iwana Tenkara Rod that we have been eyeing for several years was at our price point… $119 plus $14 for shipping. Order is in… now waiting for delivery. While we wait, will take out the old Tenkara Rod and wet a line or two. Due check back on updates on our Tenkara adventures!

More on Squaw Creek…     Littlefeather: Re: Squaw Creek Tilapia I've not been to Squaw since Winter but caught a whole box of Tilapia and big channel cats. Squaw is the hottest water lake I've ever fished so Winter really pays off! Generally in the warmer months almost every fish in the lake goes as far up the river as they can go so they escape the hot power plant water circulating. Sometime you can just step from one boat to the next to the next up the river in the Summer. I wouldn't think the bank fishing areas would be very good right now but January and February should be non-stop action. We generally just use a slip float, small hook, and regular old worms. Cold Morning at Bethany... "Green Trout Anyone" #flyfishing

The “illusive Green Trout” Was going for Rainbow Trout at Bethany Lakes this morning but was not able to catch any. Did catch a Shellcracker and two Bass aka “Green Trout”! Caught the fish using an Olive Near Deere. Did get two Trout to strike a Griffith’s Gnat but was not able to set the hook fast enough. Trout were in the pond and were actively feeding on the surface after about 8AM. However, wind and cold as well as the well positioned trees to hinder a back cast made it hard to cast where the fish were lurking. Cold morning but still had fun!

Rain in the forecast and tied up with work related things. No worries, got a round of fly tying in to start the weekend. Opted for more Olive Dear Deere and San Juan Worm Balls.
