Saturday at Towne Lake for Trout! #flyfishing

Checked out the Trout Derby at Towne Lake in Mckinney Saturday! Lots of fun …trophies were presented, prizes were won, and trout were caught. 6,000 trout were released in the sectioned off area, so the chance at catching a trout were high after the derby. Managed to get a limit plus some catch and release fishing with the Switch Rod! Went back this morning, and limited out again. Will get a video posted at a later date.   • Location: Towne Lake (Mckinney)
  • Time: 12:00 – 16:00
  • Weax: Clear, short sleeve, breezy
  • Rod: Cabelas TLR Switch Rod 6wt – 11′
  • Reel: Lamson Liquid 4 – Rio Switch Chucker (#5 – 370gr) with Versitip Leader (Floating)

Comments:

  • Checked the trout derby out but did not fish; opted to wait till later once the crowd cleared to allow room for casting the switch rod.
  • Previous years, trout tended to stay in the middle of the pond (smaller pond) and lurked too far for the traditional fly rod.
  • Fish were being caught and trout limits taken using a wide range of lures and baits. Did not seem to be a preference with on exception – Power Bait Trout Worms in Orange, Pink, or White seemed to be the “Go To” lure!
  • Around Noon, fished a Guadalupana and had several missed strikes; finally caught one by adding a strike indicator.
  • Later, removed the indicator while fishing the South bank of the pond. Used a delayed count to sink the fly, and then, used minimal movement to work the fly. Trout tended to strike lightly but did have strikes on a fast retrieve at one point.
  • Ended up losing the Guadalupanas to snags and break-offs; switched to an Olive Near Deere and caught one before calling it a trip!

 

Landed:

  • 7 Rainbow Trout – 9″-12″ – Guadalupana – Sz 12
  • 1 Rainbow Trout – 10″ – Olive Near Deere – Sz 10 in 1/124oz

Made it to the Blue River today to check things out. Great day to go… only one little Bass this round but did get lots of casting practice in with the Switch Rod – 6 Weight Cabelas TLR combined with the Liquid Lamson 4 and the Rio Switch Chucker line is balancing well. Getting great casts and distance with the two-handed Switch Cast now. Plus… always good to be able to fall back to the cast we use when shoulder is hurting from a past injury. For want of a name for it, calling it the “hurt shoulder cast”. Here is a video snippet of some of the casts used today.

A follow-on video and podcast of our recent trip Tenkara Fishing a creek. In this fishing podcast, we talk about lessons learned tenkara fishing in close quarters where brush and overhead branches limit the use of fly fishing gear and have clobbered our back cast. Easily remedied with a fly rod and switch and roll casts, we wanted to try fishing with a tenkara rod… a 12′ tenkara rod lined with 12′ of fly line and 3′ of leader and tippet. We learned that the tenkara rod worked well fishing the creek especially the use of the “bow and arrow” cast. We also learned that shortening the fly line to 6′ would help in working the fly under the overhang branches in the creek. Starting an impromptu live stream for some ukulele fun and fishing Q&A! The extra weight of the 1/80 oz fly jigs helps fishing deeper spots when the trout are lurking deep. Denison Dam Tonight

Always good to  get reports from the Lake Lavon Fishing Team!   They now seem to be on a regular schedule of turning on the water at 12:40 pm and turning it off at 5:00 pm on weekdays. The stripers are beginning to school some beginning around noon, but they really turn on when the siren blows signalling the start of generating. They will stay up busting the top for 20-30 minutes and you can have a lot of fun fishing from shore on the Texas side during that time period because they are schooling right next to the shore. Sometimes they will also feed on top right after they turn the water off. They will hit topwater pencil poppers with abandon while they are schooling! I think the siren causes a vibration in the water which causes the shad to start moving and the stripers are ready and waiting for them. COAF Field Team Vlog #25 - PBRG Size 14 To Get a Limit! #troutfishing

PBRG in Size 14 Made it to Heritage Park – one of the three ponds in Flower Mound that were stocked with trout. Rain let up, so had to make the run down the Tollway for a go at Rainbow Trout. New place… so new that Google Maps does not show the pond. It looks like it is still being built. Regardless, there is a pond, and it was stocked with trout. It’s a small pond that may be the same size as the pond at Waterloo in Denison. Water was murky, and there was a hatch going on. Even saw a few risers go for them. For us, no luck with fishing flies. Had to resort to a PBRG in Size 14 to make a limit today. “PBRG” is Power Bait Rainbow Glitter molded on a size 14 hook. We usually keep a jar in our fishing vest for times like today when the trout wanted bait instead of fishing flies. Overall, the bite was steady with lots of folks getting bit. Power Bait and Corn seemed to be working; did see several taken with fishing flies but could not tell if anyone had strikes with other lures. Fun time…

COAF Field Team Vlog #1... Sonic Pond This Round

Playing around with the camera and green screen. Put together Vlog #1 that shows the action at Sonic Pond using the Traditional III Fly Rod from Cabelas and a Foam Grasshopper! Had started out with a Near Deere but after took hook ups with Bass that threw the hook, decided to switch to the Foam Grasshopper! Lost count of how any Bass were caught. No Bruisers but would say it was in the double digits! Do stay tuned for more Vlogs; hope to mix things up some more once we get the hang of the camera/green screen!
