COAF Field Team Vlog #11 - "Two-Weight CGR at Bethany Lakes"

Fished Bethany Lakes Saturday morning. Brought the Cabelas CGR 2-weight fly rod and the 2/3 Echo Ion fly reel. Fished a “The Simple Fly” (TSF) – a very simple fishing fly made with a hook, pearl chenille, and white chenille. If desired, add a bead head.

Also, fished the Marilyn Monroe Tenkara Fly, a Red/White Tenkara Fly, and a Foam Spider (was a Grasshopper but the tail broke off).

Caught Bluegill and Sunfish, and one Bass… then had one Bass take a little Sunfish that went for the Red/White Tenkara Fly. Just in case caught another little Sunfish and tossed it in the same spot. Managed to get another to take! Got some video but missed hook sets.

Went back today – Sunday, and used a Micro Fly Rod and downsized the hooks. Caught more bluegill and sunfish.

Also, brought the Water Wolf Camera and spinning gear and live-lined several bluegill and sunfish near Waterfall. Still working on the video but did catch one and missed others.

Will post the video when done. Stay tuned… always a surprise to see what else was lurking in the area!

TBT time Friday evening fishing an old favorite of ours… the Betts Bream Getter. It’s the fishing fly we derived the Foam Spider pattern we tie. This one we picked up at Cabelas but unfourtunately lost it to a snag. Will have to either buy another or tie one using the kit we bought last year from Waspi! No worries though had a great time fishing it for Bass and Bluegill. Key tips this round when fishing the Betts Bream Getter: First, stand-off from the bank about 5 to 10 yards and work the area near the bank. Anticipate a strike. If none, then proceed closer and work the pond casting out as well as along the bank. Second, wait to start the retrieve 5 to 10 counts, letting the fishing fly sit motionless. Oftentimes, a strike will happen. Next, start the retrieve with short pulls on the fly line to create a stop and go motion. Do pause between pulls, and do watch for a fish trailing behind it. Simple Fly Tying Pattern | Pat's Rubber Leg Variant

Been trying to tie the Pat’s Rubber Leg by watching others tie the pattern. So far, has been a rough go. But, did make some adjustments to one variant that has an extended body, and then used a tying method to attach the legs that is easier for yours truly… same method I use to tie legs on a Foam Spider/Grasshopper. Do check back… plan to “test” it out at a local pond, and then tie more if it produces a fish or two. And then, hopefully… on to the Blue River and/or local stocked trout! More to come!

Getting Started Fly Fishing | Casting Quality Fly Line with a Bamboo Stake...?

That time of year when fishing questions start coming in. This one relates to getting started in fly fishing – specifically, our thoughts on budgeting for a fly rod/reel combo. In this video, the introduction has a past video playing in the background… yours truly is casting a OPST Commando Head and no rod or reel at the local pond. It’s a quality line that makes for some nice casting especially when our back cast is clobbered. Then, I describe a fly line that I will demo casting using a bamboo stake like the ones used to support tomato plants in a garden. If a quality fly line can be cast using a stiff bamboo stake, then a good fly rod should easily cast the same fly line. PS: Our suggestion has remained constant over the years… in general, we like to first purchase a quality fly line, then will buy the fly rod, and then either buy the reel last or repurpose one we already have. Cheese Cloth and Bread as Bait

Received a question about how we used cheese cloth when fishing with bread as bait. Below is a brief summary of what how we do this: Form a bread ball with the bread, Then, place it in the middle of a 4″ x 4″ piece of cheese cloth, Next, take two opposing corners of the cheese cloth, pull them together and thread them on to a Circle Hook. Do the same with the remaining corners of the cheese cloth. With all four corners threaded on to the Circle Cook, twist the bread ball covered with cheese cloth around to tighten the cloth. Finally, pass the hook once through the bread ball, not in the middle but more on the side. This will keep it from twisting off. That’s it… Good luck!

DIY Tanago Rod

More tinkering around with ice fishing rod components. For ease of reference, calling it the Do It Yourself (DIY) Tanago Rod. Going to use it for Micro Fishing; hopefully to catch one of those “guppy” looking fish! Easy to make… used a 20″ solid fiberglass ice fishing rod, a 12″ wooden handle, and a braided cord for the lillian. Add some 2 pound test mono – smallest line in the tackle box, ready to try it out! DIY Wooden Trout Net | Do Over Anyone?

Had some issues with the DIY Wooden Trout Net that I made several seasons back. In colder weather the lacing tended to become stiff and did not open up well. Sure enough the trout were able to jump out of the net and back into the water. Decided to order a net from Amazon. Net arrived yesterday, and in short order and a few zip ties later, I have a net that will definitely hold a fish or two! Do check out the video, added pictures at the end of the “Do Over” variation of the original net. Plus added a snippet of the video from the original net.

Old Abu Garcia Inline Spinner Catches 20+ Fish | Vintage Lure Series - Round 3

Another round of fishing in the ongoing Vintage Lure Series where I find old lures at antique stores and fish them using ultralight casting gear aka Bait Finesse System (BFS) Fishing. So far, I have fished the following lures and posted videos on a playlist on YouTube - see video player at the end of this post. Lures fished so far: Round 1 - Cisco Kid Diver - Caught and released 7+ Bass Round 2 - Rapala Floating Minnow - Caught and released multiple Bass Round 3 - Abu Garcia Inline Spinner - Caught and release 20+ Bass For Round 3, I fished an inline spinner that was made around the 1960s. Working the bank of a local pond  which is more like a lake in size and affectionately called Lake Glenn after yours truly. The bite was steady with 20+ fish caught and released. It was Bass and Bluegill.  The Bass were small and scrappy; the Bluegill were small as well except for one section of the pond that held some Bruiser Bluegill. Do checkout the video!
