Foam Spider and Scud Tandem Rig for Bluegill #flyfishing

Finally found the pattern for the tight lipped Bluegill at the local pond. Went with a tandem rigged foam spider and scud!

Most fish went for the trailing scud and was surprised the little bass were readily striking the scud!

Foam Spider was a diy pattern made from Wapsi’s Foam Spider Kit. The Scud was a old pattern learned from a library fly tying video… uses possum or hares ear dubbing tied on a size 16 hook with a dubbing loop.

Liking this tandem rig… plan to use it on the commute to work on a couple of ponds!

Over-Lining Our Fly Rods

Not sure when we started doing this, but we tend to over-line (go up one line weight) on our 4-Wt and 5-Wt fly rods. I think we did this by accident when we used whatever fly line we had at the time we picked up a new fly reel. So far, have been good with the casting results by going up a weight. That said, was not aware of a debate about this, until I saw an article online by Field and Stream – “ Is Over-Lining Fly Rods Good or Bad? ” For the most part, would agree with Field and Stream that there are no set rules. Would go on to say, “whatever works best for you”!

Update: We just called Turner Falls Park. They are not stocking 21 November. They have the order in and hope to be ready next weekend – 28 November. Just in case before you go, call the Park at 580-369-2988 for the latest update! Mark your calendars! Looks like Turner Falls gets its Trout Stocking Saturday, 21 November. Last year was the first time the Team fished Turner Falls. Had a great time! Pond Fly Fishing Suggestions from an Average Joe... 😎

Back to the local pond for a quick trip fly fishing for Bass and Bluegill using the Martin Fly Fishing Kit. This round I am fishing Betts Hand Tied Poppers and continue using the OPST Commando Head for a shooting head added to the 5wt Level Fly Line that came with the kit. Short trip but still lots of fun catching a fish or two.

To The Blue....

Fished the Blue River Saturday and limited out with six! First four were straightforward catches using a White Near Deere under a strike indicator. Even did some catch and releasing fishing catching several more with the Near Deere. Then, the bite turned off and spend the remainder of the day struggling to catch two more Trout. After some time, was able to get a Trout to take a John Deere fishing fly. Trout were feeding on some thing hatching. Had lots of Trout turn and look away at different dry flies, emergers, midges… finally, got one to take a Midge Emerger! Did see several trout go for a black insect floating by that looked exactly like a Size 16 Black Gnat Midge. Guess what fishing fly was not in the fly box! Bottom-line: Had a great time on the Blue!

Where to Park at Brockdale Park when the Gates are Closed

Below is a map that shows the Group Camping Area, Equestrian Parking Area, Gate, and Brockdale Park. Since the gate is closed due to high water conditions, park in the Equestrian Parking Area, and then walk down to the Park. When you near the Group Camping Area (currently being used for a Girl Scout Camp), follow the road to the right and continue to the Equestrian Parking Area. The gate is closed to the Park due to high water conditions – the boat ramp is underwater, but you can still walk down the road to the Park.

Glendover Park This Evening

Quick trip this evening to Glendover Park. Had not fished it in a while. Used to catch Catfish here but not certain if they are still there… did get a Bluegill and three Bass. No Bruisers but they all put up a great fight on the 2-Weight Fiberglass Rod!
