Stocker Trout Fishing News

Fished the Blue yesterday. Caught three; took some work but still a great time! Fished the area by Highway 7 and caught two using a White Near Deere. Explored around and saw some nice spots! Afterwards, went to Hughes Crossing and managed to catch one more on a Black Midge. Had lots of surface activity; fish were feeding on something. Tried a Midge Emerger and had them take it several times but missed the hook set. Also, had two go for a Rainbow Warrior and missed them as well. Overall, was a really nice (warmer than normal) day to be on a river fishing!  

Tied more fishing flies for the weekend and an update from Fshng84 on iFishRadio. This round tied more Pink Near Deere, some White Near Deere, Peacock and Partridge Soft Hackle, Zebra Midges, and Black Midges. The Pink and White Near Deere worked last Saturday on the Blue. Have not tried Soft Hackles yet but better to keep some in the fly box. Zebra Midges and Black Midges are always good to have at the ready. Well, it’s late into “Hump Day” and the weekend approaches. Cleared the Inbox and then took a break from staring at a computer screen. What better way then to tie some fishing flies to prepare for another fishing trip this weekend. Decided on tying a couple of Pink Near Deere; the one that the Trout were striking but I kept on missing them until one was hooked and landed. Of course, “Murphy’s Law” struck and I soon lost it to a snag. Here are two that are going in the fly box! Pink Chenille, Pink Marabou, and Red Dacron Tying Thread… else, it’s the same material as other Near Deere we tie (Mini-Jig, Gold Ribbing, and Grizzly Hackle).  Hope they do their job this next round!

Made a run down the road to Bethany Lakes this evening. Really nice day with warmer temps compared to the past weekend. Could not let the day end without wetting a line. Used the Two Weight Fly Rod and fished a Tenkara Midge, GRHEN, and Griffith’s Gnat to hook up with some little Bluegill and Sunfish by the Waterfall. Lots of fun, sure beats work! Was able to make a run across the border to Oklahoma’s Blue River. Frozen rod guides, frozen reel at one point, still a great time. Limited out with six Rainbow Trout! First trout went for an Olive Near Deere, next one went for a Pink Near Deere, then had about fifteen others looked then turned away or I missed the hook set before losing the pink fishing fly to a snag. Switched to a brown, olive, and then orange/white Near Deere without luck. Then, tried various fishing flies before trying a White Near Deere. Good thing, started hooking up again and limited out with the four that liked the White Near Deere. After a short break, went back to do some C&R fishing and to get more video. Sure enough, something changed. After losing one that threw the hook, a hatch started and trout started feeding on something that was emerging. Last time this happened, it was several years ago when I used every fishing fly in the fly box without hooking up. Later, learned about the Black Midge and the

Not sure when we started doing this, but we tend to over-line (go up one line weight) on our 4-Wt and 5-Wt fly rods. I think we did this by accident when we used whatever fly line we had at the time we picked up a new fly reel. So far, have been good with the casting results by going up a weight. That said, was not aware of a debate about this, until I saw an article online by Field and Stream – “ Is Over-Lining Fly Rods Good or Bad? ” For the most part, would agree with Field and Stream that there are no set rules. Would go on to say, “whatever works best for you”!  

Running low on Olive Near Deere. Made a batch in preparation for another trip this weekend. Blue River is looking promising; really liked Possum Kingdom last weekend. And this time, I have the Clouser Minnows in my vest for certain. Will see how the day goes, and then hit the road some time this weekend to somewhere with trout! Olive Near Deere

Decided to go west to Possum Kingdom instead of north to the Blue River this morning to go fishing. Weather forecast noted rain/snow in Oklahoma as well as Denison, so even Waterloo Park Pond was sketchy. Possum Kingdom was questionable with a 40% chance of rain, but luckily the forecast seemed to show less a chance of rain by Saturday morning. Never fished the area before but heard the river by the Highway 16 Bridge was recently stocked with Rainbow Trout. Moreover, the tailrace was looking good for a chance at some Striped Bass. But, Murphy’s Law struck… about halfway to Possum Kingdom, realized the fly box with the Clouser Minnows was left behind! No worries, would concentrate on trout fishing instead. Managed to limit out with five Rainbow Trout. All went for an Olive Near Deere. Also, caught two Striped Bass that went for a Near Deere as well. And, caught several Perch that looked like Longear; one went for a Near Deere, remainder went for a Rainbow Warrior. Key today was the retr

Received a Christmas present from relatives last year from the Mystery Tackle Box. Every month for three months, a package with fishing stuff will arrive. This one is the first to arrive! Looks good… now gotta breakaway and go fishing!

Question from one of our Readers asking how we attach our line to a Tenkara rod’s lillian. We use a loop to loop connection to attach our line. One loop is formed by the lillian; the other loop is from the braided line that we use when fishing with a Tenkara rod. When we use a level line, we attach a 10″-12″ piece of monofilament line to the level line with a nail knot, and then form a loop on the other end of the monofilament using a perfection loop knot. To better illustrate the loop to loop connection, we have posted a video below. Do check it out!    

Back to Waterloo today. Less wind compared to yesterday but much colder. Was breaking ice from the rod guides. At one point about every third cast, had to stop casting to break the ice. Action was slow on the fly but bait fishermen were doing well on PowerBait and PowerWorms. Ended the round catching a limit – two on a Near Deere and three on the John Deere. This round, we would cast, let the fishing fly sink, and then began a slow retrieve looking for any “twitch” or “tug” on the line. Also, counted between 10 and 15 before starting the slow retrieve. In addition, we would use a short pull on the line to give some action to the fly and watch for any sign of a strike. This worked on the two Trout that went for the Near Deere, else it was a slow retrieve for the three (and about 10+ that were missed) that went for the John Deere. Still a great time… good thing we bundled up and brought gloves! PS: Got an action shot of a Hawk flying over the pond trying to get someone’s trout.

Trout Derby this morning at Waterloo Park Pond in Denison. Not able to make it to the Derby but did fish the afternoon. Cold and windy conditions made things tough but after while found the pattern – no retrieve, no indicator, and drift an Olive Near Deere or a John Deere fishing fly, setting the hook when the line is pulled, hesitates, twitches,…. Here is a video of today’s action; footage focuses on the strike and hook sets rather than reeling the fish in in order to show what we mean by no retrieve. Hope it’s helpful to our Readers!

Good to see others are able to hook up in 2016! Received the latest from Steve in Australia. Although it was only one Trout, it still was a great day to be out fishing! Wish we could have been there too working a fishing fly in the river! Steve writes: About a week ago I fished another stretch of the Steavenson River near Marysville. I usually wade the part in and above the town which narrows up quickly and becomes difficult to fish due to the heavy stream side vegetation. This new, to me, stretch flowed through farmland and was wider and casting was much easier. Beautiful piece of water. I fished a bead head nymph under a Royal Humpy and got many hits from trout, mostly on the nymph as far as I could see. I landed one small rainbow trout but briefly hooked and lost 4 or 5 others. I think I can put this down to the 5/6wt outfit that I was using that is a bit too stiff. I have a better landing rate with a little 6’6″ 3/4wt rod that I usually use. Tough time getting our this week but hope to at least get a round of fishing in some time this weekend. Hope to try out the John Deere Fishing Fly on Rainbow Trout in our area.
