Made It to the Blue!

Was able to make a run across the border to Oklahoma’s Blue River. Frozen rod guides, frozen reel at one point, still a great time. Limited out with six Rainbow Trout!

First trout went for an Olive Near Deere, next one went for a Pink Near Deere, then had about fifteen others looked then turned away or I missed the hook set before losing the pink fishing fly to a snag.

Switched to a brown, olive, and then orange/white Near Deere without luck. Then, tried various fishing flies before trying a White Near Deere. Good thing, started hooking up again and limited out with the four that liked the White Near Deere.

After a short break, went back to do some C&R fishing and to get more video. Sure enough, something changed. After losing one that threw the hook, a hatch started and trout started feeding on something that was emerging.

Last time this happened, it was several years ago when I used every fishing fly in the fly box without hooking up. Later, learned about the Black Midge and the Black Midge Hatch that occurs when the temps rise above freezing, triggering a hatch of really, really, really tiny midges… size 22-26!

This round, tied on a Tandem Rigged Griffith’s Gnat lead fly and Black Midge trailing fly and started working the hatch. After several misses, was able to get one to take and stay on long enough to get video. Prefer to fish the tiny Black Midge under a dry fly serving as an indicator… plus, sometimes the trout prefer the dry fly!

Overall, had a great time “working hard” to get a limit on the fly!

Only one White Bass this round at Brockdale Park. Caught it using the Daiwa Sealine Surf Casting Rod and Penn Squall 15 Reel. It struck a multi-rigged Marabou Fishing Fly that simulated a school of bait fish (at least a school of three that is). Did have some fun sight casting to two schools of White Bass that passed but only had the one hookup. Then, switched to a 2oz lead weight to practice casting. Had fun doing that, and then decided to put the Tennis Ball Fishing Float on the line. Once the Tennis Ball was wet, was able to cast as far (possibly) further than the lead weight! Fun stuff! I think my problem is that I find a spot that I think could hold fish, and I stay there making cast after cast and come up empty. From reading reports here, it looks like you have to keep changing spots until you find the area that they are holding. Deep down I know that I should pick up and move on down to the next hole, but I just cant force myself to make the move. I equate it to sitting at a slot machine for too long...you know you need to get up, but keep putting money in thinking the next pull is going to be the one. Jug Line Fishing Again... Plus Snippet of Last Week's Fun! #coaffieldteam

Still sidetracked by the day job but luckily Saturday’s are open for now for some fishing. This round more jug line fishing at Lake Lavon. Was there on the Fourth of July and only caught one on rod and reel while kayak fishing. Had video but file was corrupted while transferring to the computer. No worries… this round, able to get the video to transfer and finished editing it! Also, still working on the fishing and side trips last month to the Texas Coast and Hill Country; added a snippet to the end of this video. Do check back periodically; hope to get it posted sooner than later!

Where to Park at Brockdale Park when the Gates are Closed

Below is a map that shows the Group Camping Area, Equestrian Parking Area, Gate, and Brockdale Park. Since the gate is closed due to high water conditions, park in the Equestrian Parking Area, and then walk down to the Park. When you near the Group Camping Area (currently being used for a Girl Scout Camp), follow the road to the right and continue to the Equestrian Parking Area. The gate is closed to the Park due to high water conditions – the boat ramp is underwater, but you can still walk down the road to the Park.

Out and About Sunday Morning Pond Fishing! #coaffieldteam

[UPDATE: Added the video of the evening round below and a link to google maps. Pond is in Fairview on Fairview Parkway.] Started Sunday morning with a swing and miss at the “Pond Behind In-N-Out Burger”. Tried the usual spots without a strike, but did see a nice Bass along the bank… that is, did spook a nice Bass! Windy and cold but not ready to call it a morning, decided to move to another spot just down the road… it’s the pond along Angel Parkway. Forgot its name; calling Angel Parkway Pond for ease of reference. Windy and cold still, did not plan to fish for long. But, then got a bite on the PMOT… turned out to be a nice Bluegill! Stuck it out for longer, even after losing the PMOT… snapped it off while casting. Switched to a Muddler Minnow, hoping for a repeat like yesterday where a Bass took it as it was “sputtering” just under the water’s surface. No luck! Was about ready to head home, but decided on “one more cast...

How We Load Our Kayak... #kayakfishing

Struck out today but did get a good workout in kayak fishing. Tried Brockdale Park on Lake Lavon without a strike. Should have taken the hint when we did not see any Shad moving about. Used the fish finder to locate submerged structure but did not see any fish hanging out in the spots we found. No worries though, did take the opportunity to answer a Reader’s question on how we load our kayak. Since we have a little pickup truck, loading and unloading the 38lbs kayak can be done one handed by one person! Can’t catch them all, till next round… Good luck and good fishing!

Answering the mail on the Centerpin Reel I used to catch a couple trout. So far, I like it... able to try this method with spending too much! I bought the reel in Amazon but shipped from the UK. It took several weeks for it to arrive. While it was intransit, I watched a number of videos on centerpin fishing, casting, and techniques. After it arrived, I practiced casting it using a Wallis Cast that calls for pulling the line off the reel and then casting. Similar to a double haul cast when fly fishing. I still need to practice my cast to reduce the backlashes I get, but I am able to cast it far enough to fish local ponds. My intent is to try float fishing it at the local tailrace - Denison Dam and possibly Lake Lewisville Ecological Learning Area (LLELA).  Both, offer a great opportunity to drift fish. How Do We Clean and Cook Trout?

Question from one of our Readers asking, “How do we clean and cook trout?” In answer to the question, we provide a summary of the different ways we clean and cook trout! Depending on the size of the trout, we clean and cook them as follows: Stocker size trout (9″-13″ in size) : We cut their heads or remove the gills (“gilling”), and then we remove the guts. Not sure why we opt to cut the head off versus “gilling” them; just seems to go one way or the other from trip to trip. When cooking the Stockers, we season them with salt and pepper (sometimes add Season Salt), and then pan fry them in oil for about 5-8 minutes each side. For larger trout in the 14″ – 18″ range: We clean them like the Stockers but will split the fish (butterfly). We then cook them on a cedar plank (see Grilled Plank Trout Recipe ).
