What Kind of Spinning Gear and Do We Use a Swivel?

Received two questions from a Reader in response to our post on “How we fish a Super Duper”:

  • “What kind of spinning gear are you using (rod length & power, reel size & make)?”
  • “Do you use a swivel with Super Dupers or Kastmasters?”

For the first question, “What kind of spinning gear are you using (rod length & power, reel size & make)?”, the spinning gear we use are:

  • A 4′-8″ Ugly Stik Ultralight Rod with a Shakespeare 20 Ultralight Spinning Reel (USP225A)
  • 6′-6″ Berkley Medium Light Lightning Rod with a Pinnacle Tiny Deadbolt Spinning Reel(DUL20).

Lately, when using fluorocarbon, we have switched the reels between the two rods, and mainly been using the Berkley Medium Light Lightning Rod and the Shakespeare Spinning Reel. The Pinnacle Spinning Reel tends to uncoil while casting ultralight lures after 5-10 casts.

For the second question, “Do you use a swivel with Super Dupers or Kastmasters?”, we answer:

We tie the line directly to the Super Duper as well as the Kastmaster. Have tried lightweight swivels but have noticed less strikes compared to a direct line connection.

Still sidetracked by the day job but luckily Saturday’s are open for now for some fishing. This round more jug line fishing at Lake Lavon. Was there on the Fourth of July and only caught one on rod and reel while kayak fishing. Had video but file was corrupted while transferring to the computer. No worries… this round, able to get the video to transfer and finished editing it! Eagle's Nest "aka In-N-Out Burger" Pond...! #switchrod #flyfishing

Decided to try another pond that we have not fished for some time. This time went to the pond behind In-N-Out Burger in Allen. It’s formal name is Eagles Nest Catch and Release Pond but we like to call it In-N-Out Pond for ease of reference. Brought the six weight Switch Rod this time, and fished Damsel Flies and a Guadalupana to catch Bass and Bluegill. Would have kept fishing Damsel Flies but lost what we brought with us to snags. Fun time… also, added a short snippet of the ponds along the Village Trail that runs between Allen and Fairview. There are three and all hold fish, just no Bruisers caught by us for some time now. Gear used:  Lamson Liquid 4 Fly Reel ,  Rio Switch InTouch Chucker Line #5 , and Cabelas TLR Switch Rod (11′-4pc-6wt / Model TLR-1106-4)

Switch Rods Anyone - Let's Talk Fishing - Average Joe's Live Broadcast

This round I talk about Switch Rods and my practice session casting a Double Spey and a Snap C. Got lots of practice to go but still good to know the Overhead and Switch Casts are at the ready next time I take the Switch Rod. Of course, I had to catch a fish or two... so I fished a little creek. It's a lot more rod than needed for the Sunfish I was catching. More GoFish Cam Fish Scouting at the local pond. Was sidetracked from scouting for fish with the GoFish Cam when five hot air balloons were passing by. One seemed to be low but quickly climbed higher. Still learning the GoFish Cam but am liking the ability to scout likely areas holing fish. This round added a plastic tube to keep the baited hook from landing close to the lens and blocking our view of the area… seems to work. Mainly Bluegill and Sunfish again, but did get a glimpse of a Bass passing by! Do check back for more GoFish Cam Fish Scouting!

Quick Trip to Bethany Lakes ... Feeder Creek! #flyfishing

Fished Bethany Lakes on a quick trip using fly fishing gear to test a new pattern – Near Guad. It’s a combination of the Near Deere and the Guadalupana. Had one Bass look at it, else no takers. Switched to a smaller Guadalupana and caught a Sunfish and a Bluegill, then put on a Griffith’s Gnat and caught several more… fun time!   Log Book Entry: 3/08/17 Location: Bethany Lakes – Feeder Creek (Allen) Time: 18:00 – 18:45 Weax: Clear, “Long Sleeve”, Calm Rod: Redington Classic Trout 5wt – 9′ Reel: Echo Ion 4/5 – 6wt Flyline   Comments: Fished the Back Pond and had one Bass follow the Near Guad. But, it did not take it. Moved to the Feeder Creek and caught a Sunfish and Bluegill on a Guadalupana. Later, changed the fishing fly to a Griffith’s Gnat as there were a number of strikes but no solid hook ups. Caught several more Sunfish and Bluegill with the Griffith’s Gnat. Back to a local pond that I have not fished for in awhile to “test” the Martin Fly Fishing Combo sold in a kit by Amazon. Using a Muddler Minnow that came with the kit. It’s beaten up but still catches fish. Lots of fun, and got a new idea for the next video in the series where I use only 32 feet of line to fish. The intent… you don’t need to cast long distances to catch fish to get started fly fishing! Stay tuned for more!

Another Quick Trip... Trout Fishing Towne Lake in McKinney

Really nice day! Still have video to edit but did limit out at Towne Lake in McKinney; caught but released five Rainbow Trout that went for an Olive Near Deere using the same setup as we used yesterday at Murphy – Corqs Strike Indicator and a Near Deere set 3 feet below it. Dead drift worked as well as a few short pull retrieves. Short on time but still a fun time… plus Charlie the Maltese Puppy got to see his first… hopefully many more to come, Rainbow Trout! Video still in the works; will post on our YouTube Channel when done. But, for tonight, we are chillin and grillin steaks and winding down this weekend!
