Update from Australia!

Image
Received an update from Steve in Australia. He was able to catch a nice looking Brown Trout from an undisclosed location. Below is a picture of the Trout! Nice…!

Blue River is Stocked!

Image
Looks like the Blue River in Oklahoma is stocked with Trout. Hope to make a run across the border for some Trout Fishing some time this weekend! Fun stuff!

Bite Was Good at Sonic This Evening... More Crappie!

Image
Had a great time at Sonic Pond this evening again. Caught more Bass, a Sunfish, and more Crappie including a nice size one! All went for a Pink Near Deere and most were caught after dark, too! The big Crappie was easily over 12″ in size, likely closer to 14″+. Not bad for a community pond! Glad to see the Pink Near Deere was producing well after sunset. Slowed the retrieve and payed close attention to any hint of a strike – hesitation in the line, slight twitch and/or tug on the line! Was going to fish a little longer but the little fishing fly really took a beating this round… had lost one to a snag earlier and then the line snapped on the last fish caught. Opted to head for home instead of fumble with tying a knot in the dark. Fun stuff… and some good practice for the Blue River Rainbow Trout; hope to make it there sometime this weekend if work does not get in the way!

Back to Sonic Pond

Image
Decided to give “Sonic Pond” another go. Glad we did. Caught more Bass, a couple of Bluegill, a Sunfish, and two Crappie. One Crappie was bigger than the one we caught yesterday. The other was slightly smaller that yesterday’s Crappie. Lots of fun, did miss several Bass and another Crappie that came off while landing it. Still was a lot of fun for the short amount of time we had – less than an hour to fish… all went for the Pink Near Deere, hoping the fishing fly does well on the Rainbow Trout to be stocked in the Blue River soon!

Pink Near Deere Keeps Working!

Image
Decided to give the pond by Sonic (aka Sonic Pond) a try this evening. Short on time with about an hour to fish, was hoping to hook maybe one or two fish. As it turned out, the bite was good with the Pink Near Deere doing well. Glad to see the fishing fly keeps working! Caught Bass, Bluegill, and Sunfish using a fast retrieve. Noticed the fish were chasing baitfish in the shallows, so “matching the hatch” went with casts paralleling the shoreline and simulated a frantic baitfish running away. Lots of fun, even saw a nice size Koi that ignored us and also caught and released a nice size Crappie – easily over 10″ in size!     Bream Getter Cabela's Fiberglass CGR Fly Rod Rooster Tail Inline Spinners Mepps Trout Kit

Bethany "Flats" for a Quick Trip

Image
Decided to fish Bethany Lakes again today after work. Only had about an hour but it was enough to catch a few Bass and Bluegill from the flooded area of the Horseshoe Pond. Calling it the “flats” since the water is less than a foot deep and the Bass cruise the area in search of a bite like the Redfish do in the Laguna Madre! All went for a Pink Near Deere. Ran out of them yesterday but luckily the pattern is an easy one. Now have two – one on the fly rod and another in the fly box. Still plan to tie more in preparation for a trip to the Blue River in Oklahoma for Rainbow Trout! Bream Getter Cabela's Fiberglass CGR Fly Rod Rooster Tail Inline Spinners Mepps Trout Kit

Sunday Round at Bethany!

Image
Cooler Temps and rain these past few days may have changed the pattern. But, since we have not been able to fish since last Sunday, not sure what the pattern was in the first place! No worries, decided to give Bethany Lakes a try this morning. Started out with a Pink Near Deere and Rainbow Warrior Tandem Rig. Fish were striking on the Near Deere, so removed the Rainbow Warrior and fished the Near Deere. Lost the Pink Near Deere to a tree; tied on an Olive Near Deere and caught more fish. Not sure how many we caught and released but the bite was steady! Was using a Strike Indicator but removed it as the fish were wanting a short pull retrieve with a slight pause in between pull. Fun stuff! Passing Through... What a Difference a Year Makes!

Image
On the road to Oklahoma City today. While passing through Ardmore, noticed the big windmills. Do not recall them being there last year when we fished Turner Falls last year. What a difference a year makes!

UPDATE: Turner Falls Trout Stocking Season... NOT 21 November!

Update: We just called Turner Falls Park. They are not stocking 21 November. They have the order in and hope to be ready next weekend – 28 November. Just in case before you go, call the Park at 580-369-2988 for the latest update! Mark your calendars! Looks like Turner Falls gets its Trout Stocking Saturday, 21 November. Last year was the first time the Team fished Turner Falls. Had a great time! Here are some Pins that maybe of interest to anyone wanting to try their luck at Turner Falls!   Follow COAF Field Team’s board Trout Fishing – Turner Falls Park on Pinterest.

Pink Near Deere and a Rainbow Warrior This Round

Image
Fished a new place today – Heritage Park in Frisco. Park has two ponds – one with a bridge and another one without a bridge. The one with the bridge looked promising; the other one looked too muddy to fish. Had tied some Pink Near Deere as it was suggested using them when fishing the Lower Mountain Fork River in Oklahoma. Not able to fish the River, opted to give the Pink Near Deere a try using it tandem rigged with a Rainbow Warrior – another suggested fishing fly for the Lower Mountain Fork! After several casts, started getting strikes but kept on missing the hook sets. On the third cast, had one on but it came off soon after. Next cast, had another strikes and it stayed on – a little Catfish. Looked like the pond was stocked with fingerling Catfish. Continued to work the pond and caught a number of little Catfish – easily makes the Micro Fishing List! Fun stuff! Pink Near Deere Catfish that went for a Pink Near Deere!

GRHEN and Rainbow Warrior This Round....

Image
Headed to Bethany Lakes this morning to try out a GRHEN and Rainbow Warrior Tandem Rig. We used the GRHEN as the lead fishing fly and the Rainbow Warrior as the trailer. Started fishing the rig under an indicator; worked well but opted to remove the indicator as we were fishing the shallow pool by the Waterfall. It was mainly little Bluegill and Sunfish that were putting up a nice fight on a “short” 5 foot 4-WT Rod/Reel Combo. Later, fished the main pond and caught more little Bluegill and Sunfish; we did get one nice sized Bluegill that went for the Rainbow Warrior but overall it was micro-sized fish this round! Really liking the Rainbow Warrior pattern; good to see it works on little Panfish as well as 20″ Rainbow Trout! Till next time… Good Luck and Good Fishing! Cabelas... Rainbow Warrior Fishing Fly

Image
Stopped by Cabelas to pick up some fly tying material. Needed Pink Marabou and Pink GloBug “soemthing fluffy” to make Pink Near Deere and Pink Eggs. Found the Pink Marabou; no Pink GloBug. Did get see some Pink Micro Eggs, so bought it for now. Also, needed other material to make an attempt at tying a Rainbow Warrior Fishing Fly. Did not have the exact material but found what looked like it would work. Tied two for now… hope it look good enough to fool another 20″ Rainbow Trout! Rainbow Warrior Fishing Fly

Report from Australia... Another fishing trip to Marysville/Narbethong

Image
Here is the latest from Steve in Australia. Nice looking Brown Trout caught on the fly! Last Friday morning I took another trip up to the Marysville/Narbethong area. I first fished the little lake at Narbethong in the pre-dawn with a Crystal Clear float and Black Woolly Worm. No takers but saw a few fish moving in the shallows. After an hour I drove to Marysville and fished the same outfit until it got light. Caught and released 3 small rainbow trout. The stocked trout have been all small pan sized fish over the last few stockings. One time some decent fish around a pound or so were stocked. When it got light I rigged up my 3/4wt 6’6″ fly rod with a Black Woolly Worm and waded up the Stevenson River, which flows near the lake. The stream was quite low and clear. I caught and released a nice little wild brown trout about 9″ long. I waded up as far as the stream vegetation would allow but didn’t interest any more fish. It was the end of the school holidays and the stream may have been th

Fun Stuff... On the Lower Mountain Fork River!

Image
Here is the video from yesterday’s trip to the Lower Mountain Fork. It was a tough day of fishing with lots of fish in the area as evidenced by the underwater video shots of Trout lurking in the area we fished. Did catch five and missed a lot more. All in the Red Zone, so we had to let them go save for the one Keeper that went 20″! All but one struck a White Midge Pattern that we think is called a Rainbow Warrior. The one exception went for the Y2K Egg Pattern. We fished the Y2K as a trailer to a Near Deere. The Midge was fished either as a trailer to the Near Deere as well as a single fly under an indicator. Great time even though it was frustrating to see them look and turn away from out fishing flies. Gotta go back for another round; we hope sooner than later!. PS: We knew there were lots of Trout in the pool we fished but after reviewing the underwater video, we saw there we a lot more! Lower Mountain Fork…!

Back to the Lower Mountain Fork River at Beavers Bend State Park

Image
Made it back to the Lower Mountain Fork River at Beavers Bend State Park. Tough day with lots of fish in the area; just did not want to bite. Did manage to get a few to strike including one Keeper that went 20″ in length! Fun stuff… still working on the video; will post soon as it’s done. Got some great video of the fish lurking but not biting! Video is posted... see it posted at this link!

Evening Round at Bethany

Image
Made a round at Bethany this evening. Caught Bass, Bluegill, and Sunfish. Started fishing with a Clouser Minnow variant… Purple Marabou instead of Deer Hair. Worked well until we lost it to a tree. Switch to a Blue/White Clouser and caught one Bass, then to a Foam Grasshopper and caught another Bass. Then, finished things with an Elk Hair Caddis and a Y2K to catch Bluegill!

Sunday Round of Fishing at Bethany Lakes

Image
Quick video/slideshow of a sampling of the fish caught Sunday at Bethany Lakes. No Bruisers, just little Bluegill and Bass. Lost count of how many… but there were more than shown in the video. Used various fishing flies with the GRHEN getting the most bites!
