Fun Stuff... On the Lower Mountain Fork River!

Here is the video from yesterday’s trip to the Lower Mountain Fork. It was a tough day of fishing with lots of fish in the area as evidenced by the underwater video shots of Trout lurking in the area we fished.

Did catch five and missed a lot more. All in the Red Zone, so we had to let them go save for the one Keeper that went 20″!

All but one struck a White Midge Pattern that we think is called a Rainbow Warrior. The one exception went for the Y2K Egg Pattern.

We fished the Y2K as a trailer to a Near Deere. The Midge was fished either as a trailer to the Near Deere as well as a single fly under an indicator.

Great time even though it was frustrating to see them look and turn away from out fishing flies. Gotta go back for another round; we hope sooner than later!.

PS: We knew there were lots of Trout in the pool we fished but after reviewing the underwater video, we saw there we a lot more!

Made it to the Blue River today to check things out. Great day to go… only one little Bass this round but did get lots of casting practice in with the Switch Rod – 6 Weight Cabelas TLR combined with the Liquid Lamson 4 and the Rio Switch Chucker line is balancing well. Getting great casts and distance with the two-handed Switch Cast now. Plus… always good to be able to fall back to the cast we use when shoulder is hurting from a past injury. For want of a name for it, calling it the “hurt shoulder cast”. Here is a video snippet of some of the casts used today.

A follow-on video and podcast of our recent trip Tenkara Fishing a creek. In this fishing podcast, we talk about lessons learned tenkara fishing in close quarters where brush and overhead branches limit the use of fly fishing gear and have clobbered our back cast. Easily remedied with a fly rod and switch and roll casts, we wanted to try fishing with a tenkara rod… a 12′ tenkara rod lined with 12′ of fly line and 3′ of leader and tippet. We learned that the tenkara rod worked well fishing the creek especially the use of the “bow and arrow” cast. We also learned that shortening the fly line to 6′ would help in working the fly under the overhang branches in the creek. Starting an impromptu live stream for some ukulele fun and fishing Q&A! The extra weight of the 1/80 oz fly jigs helps fishing deeper spots when the trout are lurking deep. First Trout Caught at End of the Garden Creek!

Denison Dam Tonight

Always good to  get reports from the Lake Lavon Fishing Team!   They now seem to be on a regular schedule of turning on the water at 12:40 pm and turning it off at 5:00 pm on weekdays. The stripers are beginning to school some beginning around noon, but they really turn on when the siren blows signalling the start of generating. They will stay up busting the top for 20-30 minutes and you can have a lot of fun fishing from shore on the Texas side during that time period because they are schooling right next to the shore. Sometimes they will also feed on top right after they turn the water off. They will hit topwater pencil poppers with abandon while they are schooling! I think the siren causes a vibration in the water which causes the shad to start moving and the stripers are ready and waiting for them. COAF Field Team Vlog #25 - PBRG Size 14 To Get a Limit! #troutfishing

PBRG in Size 14 Made it to Heritage Park – one of the three ponds in Flower Mound that were stocked with trout. Rain let up, so had to make the run down the Tollway for a go at Rainbow Trout. New place… so new that Google Maps does not show the pond. It looks like it is still being built. Regardless, there is a pond, and it was stocked with trout. It’s a small pond that may be the same size as the pond at Waterloo in Denison. Water was murky, and there was a hatch going on. Even saw a few risers go for them. For us, no luck with fishing flies. Had to resort to a PBRG in Size 14 to make a limit today. “PBRG” is Power Bait Rainbow Glitter molded on a size 14 hook. We usually keep a jar in our fishing vest for times like today when the trout wanted bait instead of fishing flies. Overall, the bite was steady with lots of folks getting bit. Power Bait and Corn seemed to be working; did see several taken with fishing flies but could not tell if anyone had strikes with other lures. Fun time…
