Report from Australia... Another fishing trip to Marysville/Narbethong

Here is the latest from Steve in Australia. Nice looking Brown Trout caught on the fly!

Last Friday morning I took another trip up to the Marysville/Narbethong area. I first fished the little lake at Narbethong in the pre-dawn with a Crystal Clear float and Black Woolly Worm. No takers but saw a few fish moving in the shallows.

After an hour I drove to Marysville and fished the same outfit until it got light. Caught and released 3 small rainbow trout. The stocked trout have been all small pan sized fish over the last few stockings. One time some decent fish around a pound or so were stocked.

When it got light I rigged up my 3/4wt 6’6″ fly rod with a Black Woolly Worm and waded up the Stevenson River, which flows near the lake. The stream was quite low and clear. I caught and released a nice little wild brown trout about 9″ long.

I waded up as far as the stream vegetation would allow but didn’t interest any more fish. It was the end of the school holidays and the stream may have been thrashed, making any fish a little skittish. I ended up back at Marysville Lake a little before midday.

By this time there were quite a few families fishing, although I didn’t see any fish being caught. The baits they were using included worms, corn and Powerbait. A few people were casting lures but, again, not hooking up. Not as productive a day as some others for me but still an enjoyable time.

Fishing the Trinity River with the EmmRod Fly Rod! #emmrod

Liked the EmmRod Kayak King for fishing the local pond for Catfish. Very convenient to carry around or keep in the little pickup truck. Ordered the Fly Rod, arrived yesterday but was not able to fish it till today. Had to make a run to Fort Worth, so brought the EmmRod Fly Rod and several Near Deere fishing flies just in case we had a chance at fishing today. Was able to fish with it on the Trinity River in Fort Worth. Water was high with lots of flow from recent rains. Did manage to catch a few Longear Perch and Sunfish! Looks like the fly rod will be made readily available for more side trips while on the commute home from the day job!

More Kayak Fishing at Texoma... #kayakfishing

Cooler temps this morning but did make the run to Texoma and put in a Spillway Ramp. Had one school pass and was able to catch one Striper. Later, worked a school of shad and was able to catch a Gaspergou. All was quiet, trolling, jigging, and sight casting but no more schools breaking the surface like the other two trips. However, did get one more Striper while casting to point. Still working on the video; will get it out in the next few days. Latest on the White Bass run on Somerville… commander1967: Re: Lake Somerville Newman's open for the HIKE in......I do believe creek walking is done for the year. But I am going to hit it ONE more time before ready'ing the boat. my son, wife and I are going to do the walk one last time. Hopefully find a few stragglers through out the creek. Turtles Skilled at Stealing Your Bait! #waterwolfcamera #waterwolf

Fished the North Pond at Celebration this evening. Brought bread for bait and the Water Wolf Camera to capture the underwater action. Got a number of video clips; still putting the video together. But, did want to get this clip out… it shows one turtle skillfully stealing our bait without getting itself hooked! Thought it was a fluke but, we saw several other turtles make the same move… position the baited hook in their mouth so the hook pulls free when they pull the line with their front leg. Ended up striking out; had one Catfish on the line but our light wire hook was not enough to hold the Catfish.  Luckily we did get it on video. Will get it posted later… likely next week. Trying to hit Texoma tomorrow!

Saturday Fishing at Frisco Commons #flyfishing

Had planned to fish Towne Lake in Mckinney but the stocking was postponed due to weather. Things cleared up and made the run to Frisco Commons and fished for trout. Kayak Jug Fishing... DIY Marker Buoy Jug Lines! #juglining #jugfishing

Finally got it done but it’s done! Posted the article on how we made the kayak jug fishing lines and why we are switching to them. We still have our other jug lines, but for jug fishing in a kayak, these are much easier to deploy in the limited space of the kayak. Also, we like how they can be dropped in the water and left to set itself, while we move on to set the next jug line! Using the Jugger Jug Line design by Top Brass and combining it with the function of a Marker Buoy, we were able to make the Do-It-Yourself Marker Buoy Jug Lines using readily available material at our local stores. Plus with the relaxation of the white colored jug lines in Texas, any color but orange works but we are leaning toward pink/magenta… much easier to see compared to white especially when the wind is kicking up! Do check it out, and do give it a try at making your own for kayak fishing!
