Bite Was Good at Sonic This Evening... More Crappie!

Had a great time at Sonic Pond this evening again. Caught more Bass, a Sunfish, and more Crappie including a nice size one! All went for a Pink Near Deere and most were caught after dark, too! The big Crappie was easily over 12″ in size, likely closer to 14″+. Not bad for a community pond!

Glad to see the Pink Near Deere was producing well after sunset. Slowed the retrieve and payed close attention to any hint of a strike – hesitation in the line, slight twitch and/or tug on the line!

Was going to fish a little longer but the little fishing fly really took a beating this round… had lost one to a snag earlier and then the line snapped on the last fish caught. Opted to head for home instead of fumble with tying a knot in the dark.

Fun stuff… and some good practice for the Blue River Rainbow Trout; hope to make it there sometime this weekend if work does not get in the way!

Over-Lining Our Fly Rods

Not sure when we started doing this, but we tend to over-line (go up one line weight) on our 4-Wt and 5-Wt fly rods. I think we did this by accident when we used whatever fly line we had at the time we picked up a new fly reel. So far, have been good with the casting results by going up a weight. That said, was not aware of a debate about this, until I saw an article online by Field and Stream – “ Is Over-Lining Fly Rods Good or Bad? ” For the most part, would agree with Field and Stream that there are no set rules. Would go on to say, “whatever works best for you”!

Update from Australia....

Work schedule remains crazy right now but still making time to get the latest update from others in the field. One update in particular comes from Steve in Australia. Here is the latest update courtesy of Steve… Great report and pictures. Keep them coming! Last Friday, I waded up the Grace Burn, which runs through Healesville and caught/released a nice wild brown trout on a Berkley 1″ Nymph fished on an ultra light spin outfit. Never used the Nymphs before and was very impressed with their fish attracting qualities. On the retrieve before I hooked this trout I saw a boil near the lure and then hooked the trout on the next cast. I may even try these Nymphs on the fly rod. Later that morning I’d arranged with the local water watch group to collect bug samples in the Grace Burn. We spent a couple of hours collecting and counting bugs and I’m pleased to say that the Burn scored very well as a healthy creek, which didn’t really surprise me. There were plenty of ...

Looks like the rain is impacting the Blue and Lower Mountain Fork, and the upcoming Spring Break (or possibly already in progress) will have the Lower Mountain Fork crowded. Need to make some adjustments! texasflycaster: Re: Lower Mountain Fork Report This sounds no good, but more like reality than the "chamber of commerce" stories that come along (expect one right after this post). Just to add insult to injury; when is Oklahoma's spring break? Talk about a zoo! I guess the Blue River is over and almost done? Okay... Another Round at Brockdale Again!

Only one White Bass this round at Brockdale Park. Caught it using the Daiwa Sealine Surf Casting Rod and Penn Squall 15 Reel. It struck a multi-rigged Marabou Fishing Fly that simulated a school of bait fish (at least a school of three that is). Did have some fun sight casting to two schools of White Bass that passed but only had the one hookup. Then, switched to a 2oz lead weight to practice casting. Had fun doing that, and then decided to put the Tennis Ball Fishing Float on the line. Once the Tennis Ball was wet, was able to cast as far (possibly) further than the lead weight! Fun stuff! Lake Somerville

I went out to the lakeside of the dam last week to see if there were any white bass surfacing. Just before dark there were a bunch surfacing but they were all small. I suspect they were the crop from the spawn earlier this year. Looks like we had another good spawn as there were lots of them surfacing. I sure hope we get some good rains before December as the lake is over a foot low and I suspect the COE will have to flow some more water this summer.     Retrieved from http://texasfishingforum.com/forums
