Stocker Trout Fishing News

This round of testing resulted in one Catfish caught, another lost while landing it. Did get another one but did not get video of it. All went for bread for bait! Working on one more mod to the camera rigging. We think the next test will show a better angle of the fish taking and/or playing with the bait. Hope to try it later today. So far, am pleased with the footage taken. Even got to see a Bass lurking in the pond. Did not know there were Bass in Celebration Park’s East Pond. Seeing a brief glimpse of one confirmed there is at least one there!

The massive amount of water released undoubtedly has carried with it lots of fish namely stripers and whites. Assuming this situation is similar as last year the river will be fishing well with the power generation cycle. Stripers and whites come up to feed when they generate power and the river rises. More fun with the Water Wolf Camera and being able to observe the action underwater. Fished Celebration Park this evening and managed to get one nice Catfish using bread for bait. Did have several others take our bait but was not able to land them. Missed hook sets as well as setting too early. No worries, still lots of fun. Murky water but still able to get some video. Also, was interesting to see an underwater current that we suspect was coming from the run off from a rain storm that passed a half-hour before. Current from the surface was not noticeable.

Made more mods to the Water Wolf Camera for casting purposes. Was able to catch a nice Catfish while testing it out! Got to see what was stealing out bait as well – Panfish and Turtles. A couple more tweaks and hope to get more action videos of fish taking a lure or bait! Modification may also help when trolling for White Bass. Wrist still healing, so kayaking on hold for the short term. Soon as we can get back out there, will be testing the Water Wolf Camera out on Lake Lavon!

I went out to Joe Pool and was fishing a secondary point...I was deep cranking in about 15ft or so, catching some nice 17" bass. And then....BOOM. My drag started screaming, and honestly, i thought i hooked a huge catfish. At first, I couldn't budge the fish at all...but once i worked her to the top, and saw what i had i couldn't believe it. I don't consider myself a great bass fisherman, heck I'm average at best. But i watch a ton of kayaking videos like Chad Hoover, Robert Field, and others, and have learned a lot just listening to their tips. This is one of those times that practice pays off and I'm so excited to part of the DD club On a side note, i turtled my kayak for the first time today, lost some gear but i was prepared. Tried the Pink/White Tenkara Fly using the Kiyotaki 18 Tenkara Rod at the local pond. Looks like this combo did well! Liking the Pink/White Tenkara Fly’s nickname – the “Marilyn Monroe”. Seems to work well on Panfish! Quick trip today but was able to get enough fishing in to feel confident that the “Marilyn Monroe” can produce fish! Also, was able to get underwater video footage and capture the amount of fish activity in the area we fished. Although the video has been sped up, can clearly see there are lots of fish in the water.    

Posted a new article online – “Simple Tenkara Fly” , that demos how we tie the Tenkara Fly. It’s the pattern we have been using lately. Have tied it in Olive/White and Orange/White variations and have had god success! Really like the pulsing action imparted by the reverse hackle; keeps things looking lively!

Question that originated the fly fishing line discussion… MUHerd: Question on Fly Line and Use Hey all, I've never used a fly rod before but am looking to start. I am not 100% clear on what all goes on your reel. OK, first goes the BACKING. Then comes the actual highly visible FLY LINE. Is the next thing that comes the LEADER and then a TIPPET? Do you tie your fly to the TIPPET? Please put those components in the right order for me. OK...can you just tie a perfection loop in some mono and attach it to the fly line and tie the fly to it? Do you have to have a tippet? As I have learned pretty rapidly, everything to do with FLY FISHING is expensive. If you have to buy a leader and then buy a tippet and when you break off a fly you have to use a new tippet. Or, if you want to change flies, you have to cut and re-tie which means a few of those and you have to use a new tippet. Are there ways to make your own leaders? Do you have to use a tippet and if so, can you make those as well? Ple...

Slow action this morning but did get a nice Catfish using the Micro Fly Rod! Started out fishing a Foam Grasshopper, then switched to a White Near Deere when we noticed the fish seemed to be lurking deeper. Fun stuff on ultralight fly fishing gear! PS: Posted picture on the Fishing Bulletin Board !

Was able to get a round of fishing in today. No Bruisers but had lots of fun catching them using the two weight fiberglass rod. Fish went for tenkara flies initially, but shifted to striking “flying insects” landing on the water. So, put on the foam grasshopper and started catching them with it!
