Out and About Saturday

Fished McKinney’s Towne Lake Saturday morning, and then fished Prosper’s Frontier Park Pond afterwards.

Took a little work to find the pattern at Towne Lake. But, did find it… Olive Near Deere was the “go to ” fishing fly again. But, the key was the retrieve – let the fishing fly sink counting to ten, and the a long pull every 2-4 seconds.

Light strikes were the norm that morning. So, we had to pay close attention to the line for any hesitation, resistance, or “twitch” while retrieving.

Later in Prosper, had another tough time figuring the pattern; that is, did not find the pattern. Did get one trout to take the Olive Near Deere and another went for a Soft Hackle Prince Nymph. Was using a Tandem Rig with the Near Deere as the lead fishing fly and the Soft Hackle as the trailer.

Did see others catching them. The key was Power Bait… water was murky and the trout were stocked in the whole pond like the first year when the Trout Derby was held at Frontier Park. In previous years, the trout were stocked in a smaller area of the pond using a net to restrict them.

Overall has a great time getting out on what started as a cold morning but later warmed nicely!

Oops, I did it again… another Winter trout stocking season is soon to be here. Like in past seasons, yours truly modified the schedule posted by TPWD to sort by Stocking Date and the count of trout stockings planned for a location and its estimated trout to be stocked. Makes for ease of reference by allowing Readers to quickly see when the next trout stocking is planned. As changes are unexpected for various reasons like weather, do check for updates, changes, and corrections at TPWD’s website – 2021-2022 TPWD Trout Stocking Schedule . Note: Dates for trout stockings at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFCC) in Athens show 12/1/21, 1/1/22, and 2/2/22. Fishing the Trinity River with the EmmRod Fly Rod! #emmrod

Liked the EmmRod Kayak King for fishing the local pond for Catfish. Very convenient to carry around or keep in the little pickup truck. Ordered the Fly Rod, arrived yesterday but was not able to fish it till today. Had to make a run to Fort Worth, so brought the EmmRod Fly Rod and several Near Deere fishing flies just in case we had a chance at fishing today. Was able to fish with it on the Trinity River in Fort Worth. Water was high with lots of flow from recent rains. Did manage to catch a few Longear Perch and Sunfish! Looks like the fly rod will be made readily available for more side trips while on the commute home from the day job!

Mardis Gras Near Deere Keeps Working

More fun catching Bass on the fly with the Mardis Gras Near Deere. Caught ten this time in just under an hour. But, had to call it quits early to go on a pizza run for dinner. No worries… still beats working! Playing the next few days by ear; will see what the change in weather brings. Pattern that worked for us yesterday and today was a fishing fly that simulated a small bait fish 1-1/2 to 2″ in length. If not fly fishing, would go with a small Road Runner of Crappie Jig on a steady retrieve using Ultralight Spinning Gear.

Turtles Skilled at Stealing Your Bait! #waterwolfcamera #waterwolf

Fished the North Pond at Celebration this evening. Brought bread for bait and the Water Wolf Camera to capture the underwater action. Got a number of video clips; still putting the video together. But, did want to get this clip out… it shows one turtle skillfully stealing our bait without getting itself hooked! Thought it was a fluke but, we saw several other turtles make the same move… position the baited hook in their mouth so the hook pulls free when they pull the line with their front leg. Ended up striking out; had one Catfish on the line but our light wire hook was not enough to hold the Catfish.  Luckily we did get it on video. Will get it posted later… likely next week. Trying to hit Texoma tomorrow!

Kayak Fishing : Texoma

Good to know!     hurricanecraig: Texoma Fished Texoma this morning from 6:30 until about noon. Water was 61 degrees. We launched at Eisenhower state park. I was trying to catch black bass but caught crappie and striper before I caught my first ever smallmouth before leaving. It was tiny. Krystal Dub Minnow (KDM) #flytying

Request from one of our Readers on how we tie the Krystal Dub Minnow that we used at Frisco Commons Pond yesterday. Here is a quick video to answer the request. Materials used were: White 6/0 Dacron Tying Thread Bead Chain Eyes Size 8 Streamer Hooks White Saddle Hackles Ice Dub UV Pearl (Krystal Dubbing) The KDM is fished hook eye up and is tied using a dubbing tool. If no dubbing tool is available, hackle pliers can be used to twist the dubbing onto the dubbing loop.

It has been some time since we posted the Bass Weight Estimator on our archived blog - CityOfAllenFishing.blogspot.com , but after a few tweaks, it is available once again on our current blog - Stocker Trout Fishing !
