Blue River Trout Fishing and KFC Buffet... Doesn't Get Any Better!

Made the run to Oklahoma this weekend to fish the Blue River! Trout stocking season is winding down, so decided to make a trip and try our luck.

Was a tough go with murky waters but our fishing partner caught four but only kept three trout; all were caught on ultralight spinning gear and using PowerWorms!

Did see others catch them using MealWorms, PowerBait, and Marshmallows, too! Given the murky conditions, was a tough go for yours truly.

Did hook (although foul hooked) one trout; and then caught one and landed it but lost in when trying to put it on the stringer!

Overall, was an awesome day on the Lady Blue! Made better with some nice trout for a tasty brunch Sunday morning. Do stay tuned for the catch and cook video!

After fishing the Blue River, decided to stop at Pauls Valley at the Kentucky Fried Chicken where the Colonel’s Buffet was being served!

What a day… Sunny, short-sleeve weather, fishing a river, catching and losing trout, and then all you can eat KFC! It doesn’t get any better than that!

Over-Lining Our Fly Rods

Not sure when we started doing this, but we tend to over-line (go up one line weight) on our 4-Wt and 5-Wt fly rods. I think we did this by accident when we used whatever fly line we had at the time we picked up a new fly reel. So far, have been good with the casting results by going up a weight. That said, was not aware of a debate about this, until I saw an article online by Field and Stream – “ Is Over-Lining Fly Rods Good or Bad? ” For the most part, would agree with Field and Stream that there are no set rules. Would go on to say, “whatever works best for you”!

Work schedule remains crazy right now but still making time to get the latest update from others in the field. One update in particular comes from Steve in Australia. Here is the latest update courtesy of Steve… Great report and pictures. Keep them coming! Last Friday, I waded up the Grace Burn, which runs through Healesville and caught/released a nice wild brown trout on a Berkley 1″ Nymph fished on an ultra light spin outfit. Never used the Nymphs before and was very impressed with their fish attracting qualities. On the retrieve before I hooked this trout I saw a boil near the lure and then hooked the trout on the next cast. I may even try these Nymphs on the fly rod. Later that morning I’d arranged with the local water watch group to collect bug samples in the Grace Burn. We spent a couple of hours collecting and counting bugs and I’m pleased to say that the Burn scored very well as a healthy creek, which didn’t really surprise me. There were plenty of ...

Okay... Another Round at Brockdale Again!

Only one White Bass this round at Brockdale Park. Caught it using the Daiwa Sealine Surf Casting Rod and Penn Squall 15 Reel. It struck a multi-rigged Marabou Fishing Fly that simulated a school of bait fish (at least a school of three that is). Did have some fun sight casting to two schools of White Bass that passed but only had the one hookup. Then, switched to a 2oz lead weight to practice casting. Had fun doing that, and then decided to put the Tennis Ball Fishing Float on the line. Once the Tennis Ball was wet, was able to cast as far (possibly) further than the lead weight! Fun stuff! Lake Somerville

I went out to the lakeside of the dam last week to see if there were any white bass surfacing. Just before dark there were a bunch surfacing but they were all small. I suspect they were the crop from the spawn earlier this year. Looks like we had another good spawn as there were lots of them surfacing. I sure hope we get some good rains before December as the lake is over a foot low and I suspect the COE will have to flow some more water this summer.     Retrieved from http://texasfishingforum.com/forums

Like in past seasons, yours truly modified the schedule posted by TPWD to sort by Stocking Date and the count of trout stockings planned for a location and its estimated trout to be stocked. Makes for ease of reference by allowing Readers to quickly see when the next trout stocking is planned. As changes are unexpected for various reasons like weather, do check for updates, changes, and corrections at TPWD’s website – 2021-2022 TPWD Trout Stocking Schedule . Note: Dates for trout stockings at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFCC) in Athens show 12/1/21, 1/1/22, and 2/2/22.
