Trout Fishing Frisco Commons with TFO 6wt, Micro Fly Rod, and Griffith's Gnats!

Cold temps Saturday morning – February 16, 2019! Decided to go a round at Frisco Commons for some recently stocked Rainbow Trout. Trout derby was held last weekend; was not able to make it.

Temps were in the low 30s, had to bundle up well… layered clothing did the trick but still forgot the gloves like last weekend when we fished Rowlett.

This round, started fishing a Near Deere but switched to a Griffith’s Gnat when we noticed all the feeding activity was happening on the surface. Like in past Seasons, Frisco seems to have a “hatch” of some really tiny bugs. Trout love them to the point they rarely will strike anything else.

Luckily, having learned our lesson we keep several sizes of Griffith’s Gnats in the fly box. Most times a size 16 will work but going up one or down one size is always a good idea in case the trout get picky.

Fished from 8:30 to 4:30, caught and released five trout. Lost several others while bringing them in, and had a lot more missed hook sets. Still lots of fun, and was able to limit out for the first time this year… woohoo!

More info on Possum Kingdom! With the lake full and the flow good we caught almost trout till July this year up by the dam. Many had put on serious weight hope the lake stays full again this year. Was out fishing a local creek earlier this week. Noted the Iwana Tenkara Rod that we have been eyeing for several years was at our price point… $119 plus $14 for shipping. Order is in… now waiting for delivery. More on Squaw Creek…     Littlefeather: Re: Squaw Creek Tilapia I've not been to Squaw since Winter but caught a whole box of Tilapia and big channel cats. Squaw is the hottest water lake I've ever fished so Winter really pays off! Generally in the warmer months almost every fish in the lake goes as far up the river as they can go so they escape the hot power plant water circulating. Sometime you can just step from one boat to the next to the next up the river in the Summer. I wouldn't think the bank fishing areas would be very good right now but January and February should be non-stop action. We generally just use a slip float, small hook, and regular old worms. Cold Morning at Bethany... "Green Trout Anyone" #flyfishing

The “illusive Green Trout” Was going for Rainbow Trout at Bethany Lakes this morning but was not able to catch any. Did catch a Shellcracker and two Bass aka “Green Trout”! Caught the fish using an Olive Near Deere. Did get two Trout to strike a Griffith’s Gnat but was not able to set the hook fast enough. Trout were in the pond and were actively feeding on the surface after about 8AM. However, wind and cold as well as the well positioned trees to hinder a back cast made it hard to cast where the fish were lurking. Cold morning but still had fun!

Rain in the forecast and tied up with work related things. No worries, got a round of fly tying in to start the weekend. Opted for more Olive Dear Deere and San Juan Worm Balls.
