Quick Trip to South Lakes in Denton! #flyfishing

Decided to check out the action at South Lakes Park in Denton. Recently stocked with trout, South Lakes can be a hit or miss trip based on when the trout were stocked and their willingness to bite. Today, we saw trout out moving about but unfortunately not near our fishing fly. Did catch several Bluegill but struck out on trout. Did see others catching a trout or two! Fun stuff! #flyfishing quick trip to check out the #troutfishing at #southlakespark in denton. caught #bluegill but did see others xatch #rainbowtrout A post shared by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on Nov 26, 2017 at 6:36pm PST

Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center Trout Fishing! #flyfishing

Image
Made the run down the road to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens for a chance at trout. Cool place with several ponds to fish. We opted to fish the Casting Pond. Maybe next round we will give it a go at the other locations. Bite started out good with several strikes on the Olive Near Deere; even landed a couple to put on the stringer. Then, things slowed as well as the are became clobbered with pine needles. Luckily, a slight wind clear the area later in the day, and the trout became more active, too. In short order, we managed to put eight more on the stringer to make a total of ten! Two of us limited out; one of us had an issue with landing the trout once hooked. No worries though, was a great time to be out on a warm November day! PS: No fishing licence is required. Entrance fee includes fishing; however, if you want to harvest the trout, an additional fee of $5 is required. There are other regulations to be aware of… we includes a copy of the pamphlet that has more inf

Turner Falls Park for Trout Fishing Fun! #turnerfallspark

Image
Had a great time fishing for trout at Turner Falls Park near Davis, Oklahoma. Water was crystal clear and the trout were readily striking lures and fishing flies… at least on Friday and Saturday. Sunday they were easily spooked and were harder to catch. No worries though… able to limit out each day once we found the pattern! Video is lengthy and starts off with an overview of the area; do check it out if interested in fishing the Park!

Too Nice a Day... Fished Turner Falls, Again! #turnerfallspark

Image
Too nice a day to pass up fishing Turner Falls Park. Decided on another round of fishing in the Park while on our road trip back home to Texas. Was tough fishing the crystal clear water; trout were easily spooked and were “lockjawed”. when it came to our fishing flies. Moved to the section of the river above the Waterfall where they stocked trout; able to catch one on a Rainbow Midge, then three more on a Near Deere. Did some catch and release fishing afterwards, but later struggled to catch trout #5. 30″ before we have to leave, caught trout #5 on cone head black wooley bugger on a fast retrieve! Lots of video to edit; for now, like with Friday and Saturday, here is a video snippet of some of Sunday’s action!

Another Quick Update of Turner Falls... #turnerfallspark

Another round at Turner Falls Park for Rainbow Trout. Two of us fished and limited out. This time caught them on fly fishing as well as on ultralight spinning gear. Near Deere again was the fly of choice; tried other fishing flies but for some reason, they reacted to the Near Deere and ignored other fishing flies. Windy started howling and gusts made it tough for fly fishing. A gold Super Duper on a stop and go retrieve was the lure/pattern of choice to close out our limits. Still have video editing to do from yesterday’s and today’s fishing trips but been sidetracked with… fishing! LOL. For now, here is another short video snippet of some of the action today.   #fished #turnerfallspark again today. really windy, had to cut the yrip short. But, did limit out on #trout …caught #flyfishing as well as #ultralightspinning gear. #neardeere and gold #superduper were the key today! Turner Falls Quick Update... #turnerfallspark

Made the run across the border to Oklahoma’s Turner Falls Park for some fly fishing. Recently stocked with rainbow trout, was able to get a limit Friday. Hope to try again Saturday for more fun fishing the river! Will post a video of the trip later. For now, here is a video snippet of the last fish of the day caught Friday! Near Deere was the go to fishing fly this round, but the Guadalupana came in handy, too!

Quick Trip to Bethany with the Micro Skagit Head and 9' 5wt... #flyfishing

Image
A quick trip to Bethany Lakes using the OPST Commando Head and a backup 9’wt Fly Rod. Setup cast well and made for easy distance casting either Roll Cast, Switch Cast, and other Spey style casts. No Bruisers but did get four fish to take our fishing fly – a Bluegill, a Sunfish, and two Bass of which one was a fingerling. Still lots of fun!

Tying Fishing Flies... #flytying

Tied a few fishing flies this week. Been having to work the day job, so fishing has been delayed temporarily. No worries, can still tie fishing flies in preps for the next trip: Wire Body Stonefly Mop Fly Variant Rainbow Warrior Variant Rubber Legged Stonefly

Turner Falls Park Trout Fishing #troutfishing

Saw the post on Facebook that Turner Falls is stocking trout soon! Great place to have fun and catch a trout or two! Depending on where they stock, can be dealing with lots of trees and things to hinder our a back cast when fly fishing or can be free in clear to cast with little chance of fouling the line! Below are videos to give an idea what to anticipate when fishing Turner Falls. Here is a video when the we fished Turner Falls when they stocked above the waterfall. Here is a video when we fished Turner Fall when they stocked below the waterfall.   Here is a video when we fished Turner Falls last year… stocking was above the waterfall.

Spreadsheets and the Texas Winter Trout Stocking Season Schedule... #troutfishing

Another Texas Winter Trout Stocking Season is almost here. Texas Parks and Wildlife posted the stocking schedule, and as in past years, we like to play around with spreadsheets for easier reference. Last year, we used OpenOffice’s applications to modify the schedule; this year we dusted of the old laptop and modified the schedule using an older version of Microsoft Office. Taking the Winter Trout Stocking Schedule posted on 11/8/2017, we collated the Stocking Dates, added Total per Stocking and Number of Stockings for a given location, and then sorted the dates in ascending order. By doing so, it gives us a better idea of the next planned trout stocking. Although the dates change as the season progresses, some Readers have taken screen shots, printed them, and then made pen and ink updates… PDF Link We do hope this helps Readers again as in past years! PS: The Guadalupe River is represented as Canyon Tailrace and the last stocking location highlighted in yellow is suspect; the date ind

Fly Shack Order Arrived, Rainbow Warrior Variant... #flytying

Order cam in from the The Fly Shack. Been having a tough finding the UV Glue locally. Decided to put an order in Monday; arrived today. In short order, tied a variant of the Rainbow Warrior Midge and used th UV Glue to coat the midge. Looks good! Hope the trout like them!   #flytying this evening. #rainbowwarrior midge variant. order from #theflyshack came in uv glue and light. worked well on the midges! Fly Tying This Evening... Mop Fly Variant #flytying

Tied a variant of the Mop Fly using Pink Ice Dub and a larger size hook. Used a smaller hook the first time and had some strikes but no hook ups. Closer look at the fishing fly was able to notice there was little room between the hook gap and the shaft. Built the dubbing portion too large for that hook. This time, went to a size 8 streamer hook and made sure the gap was wide enough to ensure a decent hook set. Will see how it goes next chance we go trout fishing!   #flytying this evening. variation of the #mopfly …will see if the #trout go for it! Fly Tying This Evening... Stonefly Pattern #flytying #flyfishing

Wish we had this pattern while fishing the Blue River yesterday. First time tying a Stonefly, the goose biots are a pain. Also, had to find a substitute for the vinyl ribbing since Cabelas was out of them. Found a stretch and bend line used for craft beads. Worked fine… still have a tough time with the biots though.   stopped by #cabelas for #flyting material. tying a #stonefly …wished had them on the #blueriver yesterday. first time tying this pattern. harder than others but got two done! Only One On The Blue River Plus a Road Trip Song? #blueriver #troutfishing

Image
Was a tough round on the Blue River today. Saw others catching trout; yours truly struggled, but did finally land one – a small stocker. That said, had a great time on the river, even put a song together inspired while on the road to the Blue… Blue River not Blue Bayou that is. Morning was chilly but things warmed up later… maybe too hot for trout fishing? Also, the wind kicked up as well. Luckily, was able to gain even more distance with the OPST Commando Head on the 9′ 5wt. Still need more practice and did switch to a floating tip in lieu of the sinking tip so as to fish a tandem rig under a strike indicator. Next round, hope to get more than one trout, but till then we hope the “road trip inspired” song / video “inspires others to fish Lady Blue!
