Quick Trips Today... Bethany Lakes and Turtle Creek!

Image
Early start this morning had us fishing Bethany Lakes with the Foam Grasshopper in size 14. Caught several fish – little Bass and Bluegill. Then, had brunch in Dallas at the Katy Trail Ice House, followed by a little hiking on the Katy Trail. While out and about checked out Turtle Creek and saw lots of Bass, Bluegill, and Sunfish. Good thing we like to keep the Kiyotaki 18 Tenkara Rod handy when hiking. In short order, caught several fish including a few Longear Perch using the Marilyn Monroe Tenkara Fly! Always good to wet a line when anywhere near fish holding waters! PS: For more info about the rod, check out TenkaraBum’s site – http://www.tenkarabum.com/shimotsuke-kiyotaki.html

Fly Tying Demo Went Well at Bethany Lakes! #flytying #microflyrod

Image
Hosted the fly tying demo at Bethany Lakes yesterday. Was concerned about the rain but luckily it stayed dry. Just in case, we setup at one of the covered picnic areas overlooking one of the ponds. Had two enthusiasts join the demo, and in short order, we had tied a size 10 and size 14 Foam Grasshopper. For good measure, “tested” the size 14 Foam Grasshopper and caught a Bluegill and a little fingerling bass fishing with the Micro Fly Rod! Fun stuff, will have to plan another event in the future… hopefully, at a location that can weather a rain shower!

Fishing Report from Australia...! #australiatroutfishing #australia

Image
Received an update from Steve in Australia… Great to hear the Near Deere is getting bit in OZ! Thanks for the update Steve! My two fishing trips were to Marysville Lake and Don Road Lake at Healesville. At Marysville I used my 12 foot tenkara rod as well as a spinning rod with a Crystal Cast float. The flies I used were the Near Deere and a Bead Headed Green Crystal Woolly Bugger which I reckon looks a bit like the Near Deere on steroids! Picked up a few rainbow trout on both flies but it was hard going. Don Road Lake is less than five minutes drive from where I live. It gets stocked with rainbow trout in the cooler seasons but it also holds perch, roach, big goldfish and eels. I fished a 9 foot 6wt fly rod with bead head GRHE nymph and a San Juan Worm under a pea sized indicator. Only caught the one fat rainbow trout that was full of milt and an 8 inch perch, both on the nymph. I’ll try to add the pictures at the end of this email.

One Fly Quick Trip... Foam Damsel Fly! #flytying

Back out again with a one fly quick trip. This time downsized to a size 12 in a Foam Damsel Fly. Still getting short strikes on Bluegill but did get consistent hook ups with fingerling Bass. Did have a larger Bass take but it threw the hook soon after taking the fly. Another simple and easy pattern! video snippet of the #foamdamselfly used #flyfishing for fingerling #bass A post shared by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on Aug 21, 2017 at 7:27pm PDT

One Fly Quick Trip... Foam Grasshopper #flyfishing

Image
Took only one fishing fly – a Foam Grasshopper, Sunday morning and headed to Bethany Lakes. May need to downsize to a size 12 or 14 pattern as the little Bluegill and Bass were having a fun time nipping the fly but not getting hooked. Did manage three Bass; no Bruisers but still lots of fun! Here is a short video of Sunday’s quick trip with one fishing fly. Also, put a plug in for the Fly Tying Demo we are hosting Thursday, August 24 at 6:30 PM. If you are in the area – Bethany Lakes, do stop by. It’s an impromptu event with no set agenda other than we will demo tying the Foam Grasshopper like we used Sunday morning!

Fly Tying Demo - Tying the Foam Grasshopper #flytying

For anyone interested in a demo of how we tie a foam grasshopper, we will be at Bethany Lakes in Allen, TX. Informal event and no set agenda. Plan to find a picnic bench at 6:30 PM, demo how to tie a Foam Grasshopper – a variant of the one we wrote in our article, and then open up for any questions.

FW: Watched Forum: Fly Fishing : Fly Fishing Texoma August 15 & 16th

Great info on Texoma!!       texoma1231: Fly Fishing Texoma August 15 & 16th I fly fished lake Texoma the past two day and had a great time and caught plenty of fish. This past Tuesday I put in at Eisenhower State Park and was on the water by 6:30am. Headed west out of Eisenhower along the rocks and the sand bass and stripers were schooling on top in some of the largest schools that I have seen in a long time. The Sand bass were of good size but the stripers were of the smaller variety. We were using 6wt rods with floating line and charetruse/white clousers. Sometimes you would find larger sand bass and stripers mixed in with the average size. We caught fish all morning long and were off of the water at 11:00am. If you want to have a great time catching tons of fish, now is the time to go. Wednesday was an exact repeat of Tuesday!!!!! Tight Lines       Retr

Another quick trip with the Micro Fly Rod. This time to the feeder creek at Bethany Lakes for some fingerling bass. Caught one using the Marilyn Monroe Tenkara Fly. Did get a Bluegill on a GRHEN as well but did not get any video of the action. Had a number of small fish go for the little fishing flies but it seems the fishing flies were too big for their tiny mouths. No worries. Still a great time going fishing!

Short on time but able to get a round in fly fishing at Celebration Park with the Micro Fly Rod! Mainly Sunfish and Bluegill on the Marilyn Monroe Tenkara Fly… Fun stuff!

Nail Knot Tying Tool: Making a Simple Line Strike Indicator #strikeindicator #flyfishing #nailknot

Image
Here is a video on how we use the Tie Fast Nail Knot Tying Tool to make a simple line strike indicator.  The line strike indicator uses a section of dacron fly line backing with dry fly dressing applied to it. The one end of the dacron line is attached to your fly line; the other end has a perfection loop that provides for a loop to loop connection to your fly line leader. We like to keep the Tie Fast Nail Knot Tying Tool in out fly fishing vest, so it is readily available for those instances where we have to retie a leader while in the field… It’s quick and simple to make; the loop to loop connection makes for quick changes of leaders, and does not require additional cutting of the fly line once attached to the fly line leader!

Striped Bass and Brats Anyone?

Image
No fishing this week so far. Been itching for more Striped Bass. Remembering the tasty striped bass fillets from a trip to Texoma earlier last month. Fillets went well with grilled brats and vegetables. Add the dirty rice to the meal, and all was good. Although the weekend approaches, not sure if we can sneak some fishing in. Got a long list of “honey do’s” plus company coming over. Going to be tough to wet a line!

COAF Field Team Vlog #42 - Beavers Bend State Park Fishing! #flyfishing #lowermountainfork

Had the trout fishing bug strike this past Saturday. So, in short order, made the run across the border to Oklahoma for some fly fishing for Rainbow Trout. Was warm and lots of folks out and about. Still a great time… caught two trout for dinner, let go a small trout, and missed several others as well as caught a little Bluegill. Did notice changes to the Cold Hole and the narrowness of Spillway Creek as it flows into the Cold Hole. Also, did some exploring around the upper part of Spillway Creek up to the tail race. Did not fish the Red Zone but next round, when it is cooler, will make the effort to fish it! Used a Tandem Rigged Near Deere and either a Pheasant Tail Nymph or a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph. Of the fishing flies the Pheasant Tail in size 14 was getting bit the most. However, did have a trout take a pink egg pattern. Just could not keep it on the hook! PS: Uploaded the non-HD version since the video is longer than normal.
