Received an update from Steve in Australia… Great to hear the Near Deere is getting bit in OZ! Thanks for the update Steve!

My two fishing trips were to Marysville Lake and Don Road Lake at Healesville. At Marysville I used my 12 foot tenkara rod as well as a spinning rod with a Crystal Cast float. The flies I used were the Near Deere and a Bead Headed Green Crystal Woolly Bugger which I reckon looks a bit like the Near Deere on steroids! Picked up a few rainbow trout on both flies but it was hard going. Don Road Lake is less than five minutes drive from where I live. It gets stocked with rainbow trout in the cooler seasons but it also holds perch, roach, big goldfish and eels. I fished a 9 foot 6wt fly rod with bead head GRHE nymph and a San Juan Worm under a pea sized indicator. Only caught the one fat rainbow trout that was full of milt and an 8 inch perch, both on the nymph. I’ll try to add the pictures at the end of this email.

More fun catching Bass on the fly with the Mardis Gras Near Deere. Caught ten this time in just under an hour. But, had to call it quits early to go on a pizza run for dinner. No worries… still beats working! Playing the next few days by ear; will see what the change in weather brings. Pattern that worked for us yesterday and today was a fishing fly that simulated a small bait fish 1-1/2 to 2″ in length. If not fly fishing, would go with a small Road Runner of Crappie Jig on a steady retrieve using Ultralight Spinning Gear.

Bass and Bluegill This Round

Tested out a new fly pattern – no name for it yet. Caught a Bass and lost a Bass, then switched to damsel flies and caught Bass, Bluegill, and Sunfish.  Will tweak the new fly pattern more, and “test” it out again. Was good to see lots of fish near shore in their beds. Looked like the bigger Bluegill were further out from shore this year. Regardless, makes for some good fly casting practice for distance… Fun stuff!

Another Quick Trip... Trout Fishing Towne Lake in McKinney

Really nice day! Still have video to edit but did limit out at Towne Lake in McKinney; caught but released five Rainbow Trout that went for an Olive Near Deere using the same setup as we used yesterday at Murphy – Corqs Strike Indicator and a Near Deere set 3 feet below it. Dead drift worked as well as a few short pull retrieves. Short on time but still a fun time… plus Charlie the Maltese Puppy got to see his first… hopefully many more to come, Rainbow Trout! Video still in the works; will post on our YouTube Channel when done. But, for tonight, we are chillin and grillin steaks and winding down this weekend!

Kayak Fishing : Texoma

Good to know!     hurricanecraig: Texoma Fished Texoma this morning from 6:30 until about noon. Water was 61 degrees. We launched at Eisenhower state park. I was trying to catch black bass but caught crappie and striper before I caught my first ever smallmouth before leaving. It was tiny. The big schools of females have made their push up most creeks last week and the week before, and with this rain a lot of hybrids will show up as well. Bent Back Clouser Variant Worked!

Tested out a new pattern… a Bent Back Clouser Variant. This one uses a weighted keel instead of dumbbell eyes or bead chain, and the hook shank is bent back slightly. Worked well today at Sonic Pond! Tried it at Bethany Lakes, yesterday with some success. Today was much better. Used a larger hook and flashy chenille instead of flashy tinsel. Stay tuned for the fly tying demo on how to tie one!
