Happy New Year to our Readers! We hope 2018 brings lots of good times especially in the field while fishing for a Bruiser or two. To start the year, would like to invite Readers to check out our latest article, “A Simplified Guide To Fly Casting”.

Recently we have had several questions sent to us by Readers related to fly fishing rod and reel combos they received for Christmas. They have never fished with a fly rod before or have some knowledge of fly fishing but do not feel ready to fish with a fly rod.

To get them started, we offer suggestions and tips as well as details on the “Start Fast, Stop Fast Concept” used when fly casting. Do check out the article for more details.

Here are a few pics of the ones I caught yesterday evening. Not very big but fun to catch on light line. Try some of those tiny flukes on 1/32 ounce jig head under a bobber about 4ft or so. While surfing the net, checked out Texas Fishing Forum’s fly fishing thread. Noted a question that got our attention. “How do I know if a cut off to much of my fly line……..? I’m a newbie and I’m wondering if I cut off to much. I am also looking for some lessons. I want to fish for trout in the future so I want to be able to lay the line down on the water softly. A report from Lake Lavon… looks like some fish. Perry: Re: Lavon dam I went down this morning .. People catching a couple sandbass, buffalo,and drum.. It was actually a lot slower than I thought it would be.. Didn't see any hybrids caught or crappie but I'm sure they are in there somewhere.. I was only able to stay for hour or so.. Foam Grasshopper Still Works! #flyfishing

Quick trip to Kroger Park this evening. Tied a Green Foam Grasshopper, grabbed the 5wt Fly Rod, and headed to the pond for a go at the fish. Number of hits from Bluegill, some Bass as well. Did lose a number to short strikes and thrown hooks. No worries… caught a number of them. Great info on Texoma!!       texoma1231: Fly Fishing Texoma August 15 & 16th I fly fished lake Texoma the past two day and had a great time and caught plenty of fish. This past Tuesday I put in at Eisenhower State Park and was on the water by 6:30am. Headed west out of Eisenhower along the rocks and the sand bass and stripers were schooling on top in some of the largest schools that I have seen in a long time. The Sand bass were of good size but the stripers were of the smaller variety. We were using 6wt rods with floating line and charetruse/white clousers. Sometimes you would find larger sand bass and stripers mixed in with the average size. We caught fish all morning long and were off of the water at 11:00am. If you want to have a great time catching tons of fish, now is the time to go. Wednesday was an exact repeat of Tuesday!!!!! Tight Lines     ...

Wine Cork Micro Fly Rod Gets Two This Round

Had a little time today to break away from the “salt mines”. Had the Wine Cork Micro Fly Rod handy in the car and hit a nearby pond – been some time since we fished the pond by Cinemark in Allen. Last time we tried to fish it, it was dry from the drought. Before that, we fished it and caught little Sunfish. Pleasant surprise this time; caught two Bass – one went about 13″ in size and the other was a fingerling. Sunday on the Blue; Only One This Round! #blueriver #troutfishing

Struck out Saturday on the Blue River. Went back Sunday and almost struck out again. Luckily, caught one Rainbow Trout using Power Bait… whew! Regardless, had a fun time fishing the river. Saw lots of trout, some were interested in fishing flies but Power Bait, Salmon Eggs, and in one instance Frog Lures! Met one fisherman who makes a lure called the Frog Lure that is patterned after a soft plastic used for Bass. These are scaled down, have garlic in them, and are fished on a jig head using spinning gear. Having brought only fly fishing gear, was able to make do casting them with the Switch Rod. Did have several trout chase the lure, even had three on the hook briefly but was not able to close the deal and land them. No worries… two days on the Blue River sure beats work!

Kayaking Fishing Lavon Report

Good to hear kayak fishing is producing on Lavon! Fisherman13: Re: Community Lakes Went to prefish Ray Roberts last Thursday for a kayak bass tournament that is coming up on the 23rd only managed one bass that went 15". Hoping to have better luck on tournament day, but Inwas limited on time that day as well. Then Friday I took a quick trip to Lavon with the kayak as well. Was looking for bass but tried for other species as well. I caught a baby sand bass trolling a crank. Then caught a decent bass jigging for crappie that went 16" Later I paddled up a small creek and had a blue cat take my crappie jig catfish went about 25" Slow day but also limited to 2 hours to fish. Lake Lavon Fishing | Slabs, Shad, and the Lazy Man Fishing Method!

Fished Lake Lavon this past weekend. Saturday at Brockdale; Sunday at Highland. This is the follow-up video showing the action Sunday. Windy and lots of waves to deal with, luckily the twelve foot jon boat and 2.5 Suzuki Outboard made for an easy run to the Water Treatment Plant for some fun with White Bass. Later, made it back to the Point, found some Shad in the brushy areas with the cast net, and then fished a modified Sabiki Rig… replace the Slab with a weight and the Crappie Jigs with hooks. Caught several keeper size Catfish – largest went 19 inches, and White Bass as well. Also, released several undersized Catfish and White Bass as well as Yellow Bass. Overall, it was a fun trip. Did see the drainage area is flooded by the Water Treatment Plant… but most important learned the Lazy Man Fishing Method! PS: The 2.5 Suzuki Outboard works well as a pillow! Slab and Jig Fishing
