TRWD Flyfest 2017! #TRWDflyfest

Had a blast at TRWD Flyfest 2017.  Not able to fish the trout contest but was able to fish and limit out at the open fishing area! Lots of lost and missed fish but did manage to get bit enough times to take five!

Fishing was rough for some in the first heat of the Big Trout Fishing Contest; did see at least three contestants hook and land trout. Largest went 21″ but there were larger ones lurking in the area.

Hope the event happens again next year! Will make an effort to keep the calendar open!

PS: Only one landed with the San Juan Worm Ball and Prince Nymph Tandem Rig. But, had a strike on every cast before running out of the fishing flies!

  • Rod: Cabelas TLR Switch Rod 6wt – 11′
  • Reel: Lamson Liquid 4 – RIO Switch Chucker with Versitip (F)

 

Comments:

  • Trout contest in the first heat has several trout caught near the waterfall and just downriver from it.
  • 21″ and 15″ were the sizes recorded by two Teams as the largest of each Team’s fish.
  • One Team only had the one trout; other Team had five trout. No others reported in Heat 1.
  • Later in the afternoon, Heat 1 remained in the lead but did not stay to see the final winner.
  • Also,did see one Palamino Trout lurking near the rocky steps area and about ten trout near a brush stickup and an undercut bank.
  • Did see one take a black midge on the surface; else, no other activity observed downriver waterfall area and upriver of the bridge boundary.
  • After Heat 1, decided to fish the Open Fish Area downriver and near the bridge boundary.Tandem-rigged San Juan Worm Ball and Prince Nymph (less the white biots) were getting strikes on every cast excluding the cast that tangled with the brush on the high bank behind us. This kept up until we ran out of them due to break offs!
  • Switched to a Near Guad and was able to maintain our mojo until the last trout to be caught to make a limit. Lost the Near Guad to a nice trout that broke the line.
  • Put on a Near Deere and had to twitch the fishing fly to illicit strikes; after two misses finally caught and landed trout #5!
  • This round used a strike indicator with the lead fly set 3′ below it and the trailing fly extending another 12″. When fishing one fly, 3′ below was used as well.

 

Landed:

  • Rainbow Trout – 16″ – San Juan Worm Ball in sz 10) with a trailing Prince Nymph (without white biot) in sz 16.
  • Rainbow Trout – 16″ – Near Guad in sz 14.
  • Rainbow Trout – 15″ – Near Guad in sz 14.
  • Rainbow Trout (Palamino) – 15″ – Near Guad in sz 14.
  • Rainbow Trout – 15″ Near Deere – sz 10 – 1/80oz – gold

Made it to the Blue River today to check things out. Great day to go… only one little Bass this round but did get lots of casting practice in with the Switch Rod – 6 Weight Cabelas TLR combined with the Liquid Lamson 4 and the Rio Switch Chucker line is balancing well. Getting great casts and distance with the two-handed Switch Cast now. Plus… always good to be able to fall back to the cast we use when shoulder is hurting from a past injury. For want of a name for it, calling it the “hurt shoulder cast”. Here is a video snippet of some of the casts used today.

A follow-on video and podcast of our recent trip Tenkara Fishing a creek. In this fishing podcast, we talk about lessons learned tenkara fishing in close quarters where brush and overhead branches limit the use of fly fishing gear and have clobbered our back cast. Easily remedied with a fly rod and switch and roll casts, we wanted to try fishing with a tenkara rod… a 12′ tenkara rod lined with 12′ of fly line and 3′ of leader and tippet. We learned that the tenkara rod worked well fishing the creek especially the use of the “bow and arrow” cast. We also learned that shortening the fly line to 6′ would help in working the fly under the overhang branches in the creek. Ukulele and Q&A and Near Deere Give Away!

Starting an impromptu live stream for some ukulele fun and fishing Q&A! Plus a Near Deere Give Away with a twist… This round we are giving away two White Near Deere tied on 1/80oz fly jigs and one Marilyn Monroe Tenkara Fly. The extra weight of the 1/80 oz fly jigs helps fishing deeper spots when the trout are lurking deep. And, the white color is what we had the local trout interested in last Saturday when the temps were well below freezing! To win this round… we wrote down a number from 1 to 100 on our whiteboard. Denison Dam Tonight

Always good to  get reports from the Lake Lavon Fishing Team!   They now seem to be on a regular schedule of turning on the water at 12:40 pm and turning it off at 5:00 pm on weekdays. The stripers are beginning to school some beginning around noon, but they really turn on when the siren blows signalling the start of generating. They will stay up busting the top for 20-30 minutes and you can have a lot of fun fishing from shore on the Texas side during that time period because they are schooling right next to the shore. Sometimes they will also feed on top right after they turn the water off. They will hit topwater pencil poppers with abandon while they are schooling! I think the siren causes a vibration in the water which causes the shad to start moving and the stripers are ready and waiting for them. Lake Lavon This Morning

Planned to fish Denison Dam this morning but with rain in the forecast, decided to fish Lake Lavon this morning. Action was slow but steady with several Catfish caught on Nightcrawlers and more caught using Beef Liver. For some reason, the local grocery stores were out of fresh (never frozen) Chicken Livers. Also, did see others catching Gaspergou (Freshwater Drum), Catfish, White Bass, and Bluegill. All seemed to be liking Nightcrawlers! Fun stuff! PS: Matched pair of Daiwa Sealine Surf Casting Rod and Penn Squall 15 Reels worked well!

COAF Field Team Vlog #1... Sonic Pond This Round

Playing around with the camera and green screen. Put together Vlog #1 that shows the action at Sonic Pond using the Traditional III Fly Rod from Cabelas and a Foam Grasshopper! Had started out with a Near Deere but after took hook ups with Bass that threw the hook, decided to switch to the Foam Grasshopper! Lost count of how any Bass were caught. No Bruisers but would say it was in the double digits! Do stay tuned for more Vlogs; hope to mix things up some more once we get the hang of the camera/green screen!

Fishing Report from Australia...! #australiatroutfishing #australia

Received an update from Steve in Australia… Great to hear the Near Deere is getting bit in OZ! Thanks for the update Steve! My two fishing trips were to Marysville Lake and Don Road Lake at Healesville. At Marysville I used my 12 foot tenkara rod as well as a spinning rod with a Crystal Cast float. The flies I used were the Near Deere and a Bead Headed Green Crystal Woolly Bugger which I reckon looks a bit like the Near Deere on steroids! Picked up a few rainbow trout on both flies but it was hard going. Don Road Lake is less than five minutes drive from where I live. It gets stocked with rainbow trout in the cooler seasons but it also holds perch, roach, big goldfish and eels. I fished a 9 foot 6wt fly rod with bead head GRHE nymph and a San Juan Worm under a pea sized indicator. Only caught the one fat rainbow trout that was full of milt and an 8 inch perch, both on the nymph. I’ll try to add the pictures at the end of this email.
