Red Damsel Fly Worked Well at PESHS...! #damselflies

Decided to tie a couple of Red Damsel Flies and fish the catch and release ponds at Plano East Senior High School.

Started out with a little fingerling Bass, then a Sunfish, and then a nice Catfish! Fun time… liking the Damsel Flies in purple and now in red, too!

Ended the trip with 4 Bass, 2 Catfish and a little Sunfish. The two Catfish went ~15″, one Bass went 14″, remainder were scrappy fighters!

Log Book Entry: 3/22/17

  • Location: Bethany Lakes – Main Pond (Allen)
  • Time: 17:30 – 19:00
  • Weax: Sunny, Short Sleeve, Windy
  • Rod: Redington Classic Trout 5wt – 9′
  • Reel: Echo Ion 4/5 – 6wt Flyline

 

Comments:

  • Tied Red Damse Flies on a whim since the Purple Damsel Flies worked well at Bethany the last few trips; wanted to mix it up and try red!
  • Action was steady with all but one fish caught in the West Pond. The one fish caught in the East Pond was a Catfish.
  • Most strikes were near the bank (which seemed to be the norm for PESHS.
  • Did get two Catfish and one Bass that were larger than what we have been catching lately.
  • Also caught a Sunfish and lost a Bluegill that threw the fishing fly while landing it.

 

Landed:

  • 4 Bass – 8″-14″ – Red Damsel Fly – Sz 8
  • 1 Sunfish – 5″ – Red Damsel Fly – Sz 8
  • 2 Catfish – 15″ – Red Damsel Fly – Sz 8

Pond Fishing Practice for the Blue River | Near Deere, Rainbow Warrior, and OPST Commando Head

Halloween Day last weekend. Was not able to fish the Blue River in Oklahoma but did take the opportunity to practice fishing using the same setup I would use on the Blue River. Fished the local pond – Bethany Lakes in Allen, for whatever would bite. Opted for a tandem-rigged leading Near Deere and trailing Rainbow Warrior. This is the same rig I like to use when fishing for trout, changing out the fishing flies as the fish dictate. Caught a Bass and several Bluegill after switching to a single fishing fly and using a short pull, fast retrieve. Another presentation I like to use on the Blue River when the trout are actively feeding on minnows, nymphs, and other emergent. Do give it a try… especially liking the One Handed Spey setup: Redington Classic Trout 9ft 5wt, Echo Ion 4/5wt reel, and the OPST Commando Head with Lazarline Running Line!

Are Your Juglines Legal in Texas? #shorts

Making preparations for kayak fishing and juglining. Had to fix my juglines to make them legal in Texas. Rules require juglines to be at least 3″ wide and 6″ long. Good to go now! While at it, replaced the Name and Address Label with a Customer ID Label. Liking it much better than the old rules!

Answering the mail to the question, “Why the OPST Commando Head for One-Handed Spey Casting?” The main reason we like the OPST Commando Head is it offers us the ability to fish places where our back cast is clobbered. Like when a tree is behind you and there is no room for an overhead or a side cast. In this case, I demonstrate using a 9′ 5wt Redington Fly Rod lined with a 200 grain OPST Commando Head, 30lbs test Mono Lazar Line, and a Floating Tip. The leader is a knotted tapered leader that runs about 9 feet in length. It’s one that I make as it is much cheaper to tie my own than to buy one. Micro Fishing | Two Piece Fly Rod at the Feeder Creek

Quick trip after the day job to a feeder creek for some micro fishing with the two piece micro flyrod. Went with a Griffith’s Gnat fished dry as well as wet. Trout Fishing | Bubble and PowerWorm Rig Worked This Round

Decided to fish Pottsboro Lake in Pottsboro Texas this past Saturday. After a little rain in the morning, made it to the pond just as a cold front rolled in. Cold and windy, did manage three trout. Planned to catch trout using ultralight lures and a BFS Rod/Reel, but trout wanted PowerWorms. Good thing I had the Bubble and Fly Rig handy, just swapped the fishing fly for a PowerWorm. Bite was steady, just kept missing the hookset. Did get a few Bluegill and a Bass on the PowerWorms. Plus got some underwater video of what was lurking in the pond! Do check out the video! More fun fishing Denison Dam last Saturday for Striped Bass! Bite was slower than the weekend before but was able to catch a few; ended up keeping three Striped Bass for the Catch and Cook. Brought the Cabelas TLR 6wt Switch Rod with the Echo Ion 6/7 Wt Fly Reel again. And correcting from our last video, the fly line was a Rio InTouch Chucker with integrated running line. Stripers were hitting mainly striking on the Bennet’s Lunch and Craft Fur Clouser Minnows this round. Did catch a couple of White Bass as well, and found an anchor! Overall was a fun time! Nice One On a Tenkara Rod from Australia!

Latest report from Steve in Australia has trout caught on the fly with a Tenkara Rod! Steve sends a picture of one trout – first one on a Tenkara Rod and a brief summary of the trip below. I went up to Marysville on Tuesday afternoon and fished my tenkara rod in the recently stocked lake. Once I got used to the limited casting range, I really enjoyed it. With the 8 foot rod, 12 foot level line and 6 foot of 3 pound tippet, I could reach out over 20 feet, which was quite adequate. I tried soft hackle flies and nymphs but had no luck with them. Changed to a black Woolly Worm and caught and released 6 nice pan size rainbows. All up pretty happy with the outfit, even if it was a little under gunned for lake fishing.
