Fishing a Foam Grasshopper for Bass! #flyfishing #bassfishing

Image
Started out trying to catch Bass using the No Name Fly. Bass were cruising the shallows like the other day. Went to the Foam Grasshopper tied using a foam cutter that forms a Chernobyl Ant body. Used a Size 4 hook to provide increased hook setting rates. Worked on Bass and Bluegill!

Short video of a quick trip to the local pond. Not been to this one in awhile but good to see there are bass to be caught and released! A catch and release pond that holds bass and bluegill. Was a fun time; have more video to post but wanted to get this one out…. bass jumped a lot higher than the video shows but can clearly see it came out of the water completely!

Fly Fishing the Local Pond #foamgrasshopper

Fished the local pond for Bass in hope of catching a fish or two with a new pattern modified from two variants of the BOB Fly or Bass On Bed Fly. First BOB Fly was tied clouser style on a bent back hook using marabou plumes. Worked but wanted the hook bend to ride higher while on bottom. Second variant od the BOB Fly added marabou plumes to the hook bend like adding a tail. Worked on Bass. Called it the BOBTAIL Fly since it’s a BOB Fly with a tail. The pattern we were testing is tied different and has saddle hackle and lead wire but no dumbell eyes… calling it the No Name Fly for now. How to tie at https://youtu.be/w3Tc_7NxKDQ Test was thrown a curve… bass were cruising the shallows instead of on their beds. Good thing the Foam Grasshopper was in the fly box!

No Name Fly for Bass Fishing #flytying #flyfishing

Tied another variant of the BOBTAIL Fly… this one is different, no dumbbell eyes, and only marabou plumes on the hook bend, and then saddle hackle for the body. More to come… Bass were cruising instead of on their beds Saturday. Caught one on a Grasshopper and lost one bringing it in as well. Nice day with lots of social distancing room! No Name Fly Details on tying the No Name Fly!

Fly Fishing for Bass with the Bass On Bed Fly #bobtail #bobfly

Back to the local pond catching bass with the variant of the BOB fly… this one has added plumes to keep the hook riding high while on the bottom. Calling it the BOBTAIL Fly. Caught a little Bass with a Foam Grasshopper and a Sunfish… switched to the Foam Grasshopper because it was hard to see the BOBTAIL Fly due to the angle of the sun and the wind waves roiling up the water. Spied a Bass lurking by the outflow of the waterfall pool… switched back to the BOBTAIL Fly and got his attention. Nice sized Bass that reminded us of the ones that used to lurk in the pond! Good Stuff!

Fishing the Bass on Bed Fly #bassfishing #flyfishing

Able to fish the local pond with the Bass on Bed Fly. First round struck out, had bass on either broke the line; was using 4lbs test. Or, missed the hook set, else Bass threw the hook. Next round, modified the Bass On Bed Fly by adding more marabou plumes tied on the pool bend. Caught two Bass, success! Not sure what to call the pattern… for now it’s the Bass On Bed Fly aka BOB Fly with a plume! Do give it a try!

Bass Fishing with Senkos This Round #bethanylakes #bass

Image
Able to fish the local lake Saturday with the break in the rain. Caught four bass that were in their beds. Fun time… do checkout the video, gives an idea how I rig a Senko – new as well as damaged… forgot the Superglue this time. Also, shows some bass takes a little more coaxing to strike!

When You Can't Go Fishing, We Can Talk Fishing...!

Image
Rain and cold has me indoors. No worries, can always talk fishing. Meaning making preps for our next fishing trips. This time it’s about review past videos, current videos, and online scouting. In particular, Senkos for Bass, EmmRod for a commuter fishing rod, and current action on bass and white bass in the area! Of note are playlist mentioned in the video: Senko Fishing EmmRod – Ponds and Commute Heritage Kayak

Make Your Senkos Last Longer with Super Glue #emmrod #senko #superglue

Super Glue and Senkos still works for getting a few more bass on the same Senko. Do see how I use it in the video where I “test” the EmmRod Senko Fishing Rod at the local pond for bass. Skip to 4:50 to see the Super Glue being used. Skip to 6:40 to see another tip to make the Senko last longer! Was a tough go with murky water but it was promising with several strikes and misses. Luckily, the rain held off, and was able to keep fishing. Managed to hook but lose a Bass. Then, caught two in the “flats”, and one bass on its bed! All went for Senkos, all caught using the EmmRod Senko Rod – Kayak King handle and Stream Master rod section. No issues casting, even for distance when needed. Liking the setup… plan to be the “commuter rod” to keep handy while going to/from the day job! Moreover, only used one Senko this trip!

EmmRod Senko Fishing Rod #emmrod

While cleaning out the closet and organizing fishing gear, pooled the various plastic lures we accumulated over the past couple of years. Of note were the Senko Worms we had both the commercially available one from Gary Yamamoto as well as hand poured ones we made. Also, while organizing things in the room, had a lightbulb idea… switch the EmmRod Stream Master rod section with the EmmRod Kayak King rod handle. In short order, we have the EmmRod Senko Fishing Rod. Hope to try it out sooner than later… raining right now and throughout the week. No worries, will be ready to try it out as soon as we see a break in the weather. Do stay tuned!

Finding Spawning White Bass in Texas... #sandbass #whitebass

Image
Back in the day… We would drive by the boat ramp on the Nueces River, and when we saw lots of cars, trucks, and boat trailers, we would put in the jon boat. Then, using a 2hp motor, we trolled upstream a Johnson Minnow. Flat lining the spoon until we got a strike, then we stopped to cast or troll the area either catching more, or moving on if no other takers! We would continue to head upriver, repeating this pattern and as we reached a shallow, sandy area… typically, a bend in the river, we would wade the area and concentrate efforts in hopes of catching a school of spawning white bass. Now a days… We prefer to wait till warmer weather and when the spawn is over and the White Bass are schooling on the lake. More often than not, we kayak fish for them, trolling a slab and jig rig or multiple tandem rigged jigs tied sabiki style. Also, sight casting to breaking schools feeding on shad near the water’s surface. Else, we bank fish and surf cast “without the surface” on windblown points on

Liking the Discount Switch Rod #flyfishing

Image
Limited out last weekend at Pebblebrook Community Park pond in Sherman. The discount switch rod worked well along with the Rubber Legged Near Deere and Mop Fly! Had trout readily taking both fishing flies but the Rubber Legged Near Deere seemed to get more strikes than the.Mop Fly. The Discount Switch Rod worked nicely. Ease of casting for distance when needed while minimizing false casting meant more time fishing the fly in the water and not in the air being cast! Able to demo how we cast with the setup and manage the line… OPST Lazar Line can get in the way at times. Also, did mention the Trinity and the tough go we had fishing it Saturday, March 14.

Favorite Fly Fishing Combo for Pond Trout! #neardeere #onehandedspey #maxcatch #orvis #riotroutmax

Fished a new pond that was recently stocked with rainbow trout. Located in Sherman, Tx is Pebblebrook Community Park Pond. Last weekend a Trout Derby was held at Pebblebrook; we were not able to make it but we anticipated lots of trout would be on the prowl Saturday morning. They were… water was murky but the Rubber Legged Near Deere had them striking. Add the Rio Trout Max One-Handed Spey line on an Orvis Hyrdos SL1 reel and 10′ MaxCatch Fly Rod in a 2wt – what we call the “Discount Switch Rod” made for easy casting and catching! Setting the hook in the time was another story though! No worries… was able to limit out. The Rubber Legged Near Deere and the Discount Switch Rod are fast becoming the Team’s favorite combo for trout fishing ponds! Why…? Ease of casting for distance with minimal false casting if any. Plus the 10′ Length provided added line control of the 200 grain shooting head Trout seem to strike the rubber legged variant more readily than ones without legs, and worked i

Tying the Rubber Legged Near Deere #flytying

Image
This video we mention two fishing flies… the Rubber Legged Near Deere and an Pearl Chenille Streamer. The Rubber Legged Near Deere worked well on stocked trout at two local ponds. The Pearl Chenille Streamer worked well on Striped Bass at Denison Dam as well White Bass on Lake Lavon Do check out the video and the demo on how we tie the Rubber Legged Near Deere!
