What's Lurking in the North Pond...! #waterwolfcamera

Image
Decided to do some underwater video scouting at Celebration Park’s North Pond with the Water Wolf Camera. Have not used the camera in a while nor fished the pond recently. But, was able to confirm the Bluegill and Sunfish are still in the pond as well as Catfish!

Lake Somerville

Image
News from Somerville!   I went out to the dam this evening and saw white bass surfacing on the lake. I walked down and there was a guy fishing out there but he said they were too small and he couldn't catch them. So I started by throwing my normal clousers and marabou jigs and I had the same problem. I went through multiple clousers, marabou jigs, briminators, and rubber legged dragons and had only caught about 6. Finally, I put on a size 10 chartreuse rubber legged dragon and started catching them on almost every cast until I got bored. I put on a small popper and caught a couple. I finally thought I had caught a keeper but it ended up being a big bluegill. I picked up a couple LMB as well. There were acres of these little guys and they stayed there feeding from around 7 PM to 9 PM. No keepers, but I still had fun for a while. Lake Somerville was stocked with 60K hybrid fingerling a few months ago! The fish you ...

What Reel Were We Using in Galveston? #pennsquall15

Image
Reader sent in a question related to our recent trip to Galveston. Had a question on the reel we were using on one of our surf casting rods – specifically, the “black and gold one”. We were using a Penn Squall 15 Reel. It was mounted on a Rodsmith 10′ Rod (Triton Series); we normally have it mounted on a 11′ Daiwa Sealine Surfcasting Rod but the piers in Galveston limit rods to a 10′ maximum length. Below are a couple of videos we posted in the past where we practice casting as well as fish with the rod/reel. Really like this setup; so much that we have a matched pair! Fly fishing Lake Texoma

More details on Texoma's action!     mickfly: Re: Fly fishing Lake Texoma Most of my fish were caught deeper -- 300 grain sink tip and a countdown from ten to 30 seconds, depending on where they showed up on the fish finder. But when they were up, it was just cast and strip, as fast as you can. Going back tomorrow for another dose of this fishing medicine!     Retrieved from http://texasfishingforum.com/forums

White Bass on Lavon!

Great report on the White Bass action on Lavon!   Just after 10am launch from Lavonia S outh, graph lit up.  Within minutes plenty of surface action all around.    No pictures because I don't keep Sandies.  Despicable. spiney, awful tasting fish, but fun to catch & release.    Doesn't anyone post anymore?     p.s.  Went out Wednesday 06-21 and Sandies were on the surface around 1:30 about 1,000 yards west of RR bridge (east of Hybrid point).  Used th e big motor but they were gone by the time I got there.   Retrieved from http://forum.lakelavonfishing.com

Fly Fishing : Fly fishing Lake Texoma

Promising report on stripers at Texoma!     texoma1231: Fly fishing Lake Texoma I fly fished on Thursday and Friday of this past week on Texoma in the Little Mineral area and had a great time. There were so many fish on top last Thursday that I could not believe my eyes. These were not big fish but there were so many and they stayed on top long enough that 5-6 fish could be caught before they went down. The stripers were 12-13 inches long and there were plenty of sand bass mixed in the schools. Most of the schools came up in the area of the Lighthouse Marina and moved up and down the banks from there. Actually they were all up and down that side of Little Mineral. I had two 6 wt fly rods. One with a small top water popper and one with a small white clouser. While the fish were up I would catch them on the popper and when they would go down you could still catch them on the clouser. The fish were feeding on shad that ...

Foam Grasshopper Still Works! #flyfishing

Quick trip to Kroger Park this evening. Tied a Green Foam Grasshopper, grabbed the 5wt Fly Rod, and headed to the pond for a go at the fish. Number of hits from Bluegill, some Bass as well. Did lose a number to short strikes and thrown hooks. No worries… caught a number of them. Lost count after 15.   #flyfishing a #foamgrasshopper this evening. still works on #bluegill and #bass at kroger park… A post shared by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on Jun 23, 2017 at 8:05pm PDT

Scouting Around... Then Caught Two Sunfish! #microflyrod

Image
Finally stopped at a pond – more like a series of three ponds in the area. Looked promising but struck out. Could not end the day without a tug on the line, so stopped by Celebration Park East Pond and caught two Sunfish on the two piece Micro Fly Rod! Gear Used: Upper two sections of a 4pc 8wt Fly Rod Mini Fly Reel: (did not use the rod) Interested in making your own Micro Fly Rod? See our article – “ COAF Micro Fly Rod “. The two piece Micro Fly Rod used today is the one in the middle of the video thumbnail below.

No Fishing Today; Tunes and Burgers Instead #allensummersounds

No fishing today. Decided to check out the Allen Summer Sounds concert. Today, Jolie Holliday and Sonny Burgess brought some great music to Bethany Lakes – the Team’s stomping grounds for fishing. Although Bethany Lakes had us wanting to fish, the music and the free burgers from In-N-Out Burger kept us chillin’ in the grass. Had a great time!   fun time at #allensummersounds listening to #jolieholiday and #sonnyburgess …no #fishing today, tunes and burgers instead! great music, great time! Happy Father's Day... Let's Try a Mirrolure! #mirrolure

Image
Happy Father’s Day!  What better way to start the day fishing the local pond. Still having withdrawals from the Coast and saltwater fishing. No worries, tried fishing a Mirrolure at Bethany Lakes. Had one Bass take it but throw the lure while bring him in. Did get a big turtle to take as well; it also came loose from the lure. Did see others catching Bass, so the fish are there! Going to have to try the Mirrolure again sooner than later! Gear Used: Ugly Stik Lite 7′ Medium Action Spinning Rod Penn Pursuit 4000 in newer model Pursuit II Mirrolure

Fishing with the Switch Rod...! #switchrod

Image
Fun times last week on the coast, but we are back in the DFW Metroplex. Had some work and “honey do’s” to complete, so been out of pocket this week. This morning did make a quick trip to Sonic Pond fishing the Switch Rod. Caught our Bass on a White Foam Grasshopper, and one Bass on a Guadalupana! Missing the Coast but still having fun fishing wherever we can! Gear Used: Echo Ion Fly Reel 8/10 wt Lamson Liquid 4 Fly Reel Rio Switch InTouch Chucker Line #5 Cabelas TLR Switch Rod (11′-4pc-6wt / Model TLR-1106-4)

This Round... to the 61st Street Fishing Pier! #galveston #61ststreetfishingpier

Image
Was fun time on the Coast! We closed out this trip fishing the 61st Street Fishing Pier. We fished it in the day, then later at night, cutting the evening short due to rain. Did make it out to one of the little jetties along the beach to practice casting with the Switch Rod; did not get a bite but still good to get some practice in real beach conditions!

Back in the Metroplex... Was a Great Round of Fishing!

Back in the DFW Metroplex but sure did have a great time on the coast. Able to fish Surfside’s Jetty, Galveston’s Seawolf Park Pier, another Park in Galveston (but cannot recall the name), and the 61st Street Fishing Pier. Mainly caught and released fish, except for one Spanish Mackerel. Chillin’ and grillin’ now that we are back. Having the Spanish Mackerel along with Fajitas for dinner tonight. Will get a close out video to show how the action on the Pier went. Overall, it was a great round of fishing for the Team!   back from #galveston …chillin and #grilling #spanishmackeral #fajitas #poblanos …my life is good! Seawolf Park for More Saltwater Fishing #seawolfpark #fishing

Image
Having a blast on the coast! Brings back fun times from way back when… this round, we opted for Seawolf Park Pier. Planned to fish Galveston Fishing Pier but while enroute, decided to fish a backwater area. While getting live shrimp for bait, the bait attendant suggested Seawolf Park Pier. Enough said… we went to Seawolf Park Pier. Promising area where we caught Perch and Croaker, and we think they are Spadefish. Also, caught a Spanish Mackerel! Fun times… PS: Did see one little Shark swim past the pier.

Surfside Beach at Jetty Park #surfsidebeach

Image
In the area for a few days, brought fishing gear and tried out Jetty Park in Surfside Beach, Texas! No Bruisers but still fun! Saw fish breaking on the water’s surface; tried casting lures in hopes of catching what was causing them to “panic”. No hookups but switched to the Channel side of the jetty and had fun catching several fish, especially the Ribbon Fish! Fun times… love the Coast!

Another Switch Rod and Pond Video...! #switchrod #flyfishing

Image
Been using the excuse that I need to practice casting a Switch Rod to get in more fishing time! Here is a video clip of today’s “practice session”! Really like the 6wt Switch Rod for fishing rivers like the Blue, Lower Illinois, and Lower Mountain Fork in Oklahoma. Also, have used it on the Guadalupe River and the tailraces at Denison Dam and Lewisville Lake in Texas. But, a Switch Rod in the local ponds has worked well on many occasions over the years. Plus, always good with any opportunity to practice casting!   Switch Rod Used: Lamson Liquid 4 Fly Reel Rio Switch InTouch Chucker Line #5 Cabelas TLR Switch Rod (11′-4pc-6wt / Model TLR-1106-4)

Bluegill at Bethany This Round...! #switchrod #foamgrasshopper

Went back to Bethany Lakes with the Switch Rod. Water level is still up but the flow by the waterfall has slowed. Caught one fish there, else worked the other ponds until settling on the Back Pond where Bluegill were hanging out. Lost count of how many but here are pics of nine. All went for a White Foam Grasshopper!   #bluegill this round at #bethanylakes uaing the #switchrod and a white #foamgrasshopper A post shared by COAF Field Team (@coaf.field.team) on Jun 4, 2017 at 12:21pm PDT

Break in the Rain... To Bethany We Go! #switchrod #flyfishing

Image
Rain was pouring this morning, then we saw a break in the storm. Made the run to Bethany to see what was lurking by the Waterfall. Was working on another online article, hope to post sooner than later. But, when the rain stopped, got sidetracked and grabbed the first rod available – the 6wt Switch Rod that we used yesterday… LOL! In the past, we had good strikes using a Purple Damsel Fly under a strike indicator. Today was no different! Managed three Bass this round before having to cut the trip short… grocery store errand for the significant other. Doh!     Switch Rod Used: Lamson Liquid 4 Fly Reel Rio Switch InTouch Chucker Line #5 Cabelas TLR Switch Rod (11′-4pc-6wt / Model TLR-1106-4)

Rainy Day Has Us YouTube Surfing... #music #gloriaestefan

Image
It’s raining and we hear thunder, so it time to surf the internet – specifically, YouTube. Ran across this song. Brought back memories of pastel colored shirts, a white summer jacket, and parachute pants! Gotta love Gloria Estefan singing this song – “Con Los Anos Que Me Quedan”. Found the English version, titled “If We Were Lovers”….Of the two, prefer the original in Spanish!

Switch Rod and the Foam Grasshopper Again! #switchrod #flyfishing

Image
Tied three more Green Foam Grasshopper to replace the one we lost yesterday. Then, made the run to Bethany for more fun fishing with the Switch Rod. Ended up with a Bluegill, Sunfish, and three Bass… and only one Grasshopper left. No worries… lots of fun still and luckily the pattern is simple and quick to tie!     Gear used: Lamson Liquid 4 Fly Reel Rio Switch InTouch Chucker Line #5 Cabelas TLR Switch Rod (11′-4pc-6wt / Model TLR-1106-4)

More Switch Rod Practice... and the Foam Grasshopper! #switchrod

Image
Mid-week hump day has us at Bethany Lakes for more Switch Rod casting practice. Started with a Clouser for the fishing fly, but switched to a Green Foam Grasshopper after seeing surface activity as we walked the Main Pond. Missed a couple before hooking one. Brought it to the bank and it managed to throw the hook. Got video of the “release”, so counting this one in today’s total – 5 Bass this round and a Sunfish. Did lose the Green Foam Grasshopper to a snag. Had one more in the fly box in the Yellow, so was able to keep getting strikes!
