Stocker Trout Fishing News

Was able to get a round of fishing in yesterday morning at Kroger Pond. Went with the Two Weight Fly Rod again, and fished with an Orange/White Tenkara Fly and a Foam Grasshopper. Bite was steady with several nice Bruiser Bluegill in the mix. Did see several nice sized Bass chasing after little Bluegill but none went for out fishing fly. Overall, another fun time fishing…. Good thing we were able to fish yesterday, big storm is hitting our area currently. Stuck indoors today.

Fun time fishing with a Two-Weight Sunday morning! Enjoyable weekend so far. Even got another round in this morning at Kroger Pond. Working on the this morning’s video still; below is the video from yesterday! Also included some clips fishing Lake Lavon on Saturday.

Finished the tail mount from last year’s Striped Bass caught at Denison Dam. Great fight on a 5-Wt! Tail ,mount to capture the moment, adding to the video of the action we posted back on November last year – November 1, 2015 !

Video of the sabiki fly that we have been using for White Bass at our local lake. Easy pattern made with minimal material – hook, mono, food wrapper!

Fun time this evening catching Bluegill, Sunfish, and Bass on the Micro Fly Rod. Started with a Foam Grasshopper but then switched to a Tenkara Fly. Had a number of bites with the Foam Grasshopper but kept missing the hook set. After switching to the Tenkara Fly, had a better hookup rate. No Bruisers save for a run on some nice size Bluegill that were making a nice bend in the little fly rod. Sure glad to have made use of that broken 8-Wt to make this rod. Fun stuff!

Report from Somerville!     J-Moe: Re: Lake Somerville Lake level receded to 248 ft. 10 ft above normal and releasing 2167 cfs. It's raining again today. Hopefully, it won't get to heavy. The Brazos and the Yegua water shed are both taking on water though. I noticed the water below the dam had risen about 6 inches to a foot so the Brazos is still taking on some water from the previous rains. Good report on Lake Lavon! " I went out yesterday around 6:45. It was cloudy and looked like it could either storm or clear up. I started at the east side of the damn, and the wind laid down and it was nice weatrher. First cast, good little 14 inch bass. I kept working the damn and got a bite every other cast. 2 or 3 cranks from the rocks, it was a Largemouth bass. If I got 10 - 15 feet away from the rocks, it was usually a crappie (big crappie, 14-15"). I went to look for the Sandies to have a little fun, but couldn't find them biting. So, I went back to the west end of the damn by the water release. First cast, I thought I was hung up in the rocks. It was a very soft bite. then the line started slowly moving away from me. It was the biggest Largemouth I have ever caught. It was 22 1/2". I thought it might be 10 pounds, but from the conversion charts, it was probably 7-8 pounds. Tried the Orange/White Tenkara Fly at Bethany Lakes this morning. Caught seven Bluegill and Sunfish but no Bass. Had several small Bass look at the fishing fly, but no takers. Forgot how simple and fun fishing with a Tenkara rod is like. Windy conditions but luckily the wind was in our favor! Fun stuff!  

Fished the Olive/White Tenkara Fly this evening at the local lake. Started fishing the Back Pond, then moved on to the Lower Pond after catching a few. This round dusted off the Tenkara Rod and used it to fish. Forgot how simple it is to pack up and go fishing with a Tenkara Rod. Really liking the ability to “pulse” the Tenkara Fly with the up/down twitching of the rod. This round it was 24 fish in a mixed bag of little Bass, Bluegill, and Sunfish. Fun stuff!

Liked the Olive/White Tenkara Fly; decided to try Red for the body and White for the Wing… end result is another simple but effective fishing fly pattern. Tested the pattern at Bethany Lakes this evening. Really windy day but did get enough casts to catch 12 fish this round  – two Bass and ten Bluegill! May need to tie more of these guys!
