How We Setup a Sabiki Slab and Jig Rig for Kayak Fishing and Surfcasting?

Here is an updated variation on the Sabiki Slab and Jig Rig that we have been using for kayak fishing and surfcasting from lake points over the years.

The rig still uses three different monofilament lines – 30lbs, 20lbs, and 12lbs test. And, it still uses a Slab lure and three Jigs. The only difference is we no longer pass the dropper line for the jig through the overhand knots tied on the main line.

Instead, we jam the uni-knot against the overhand knots and one of the barrel knots. This makes for a quick re-tie when a jig breaks off.

We continue to favor this setup as the 20lbs test line to the slab will breaks off, saving the 30lbs mainline and jigs in the event of a snag.

Moreover, the 12lbs droppers will breakoff before the 30lbs mainline also saving us from re-tying the entire rig while on the water!

Pond Fishing Practice for the Blue River | Near Deere, Rainbow Warrior, and OPST Commando Head

Halloween Day last weekend. Was not able to fish the Blue River in Oklahoma but did take the opportunity to practice fishing using the same setup I would use on the Blue River. Fished the local pond – Bethany Lakes in Allen, for whatever would bite. Opted for a tandem-rigged leading Near Deere and trailing Rainbow Warrior. This is the same rig I like to use when fishing for trout, changing out the fishing flies as the fish dictate. Caught a Bass and several Bluegill after switching to a single fishing fly and using a short pull, fast retrieve. Another presentation I like to use on the Blue River when the trout are actively feeding on minnows, nymphs, and other emergent. Do give it a try… especially liking the One Handed Spey setup: Redington Classic Trout 9ft 5wt, Echo Ion 4/5wt reel, and the OPST Commando Head with Lazarline Running Line!

Are Your Juglines Legal in Texas? #shorts

Making preparations for kayak fishing and juglining. Had to fix my juglines to make them legal in Texas. Rules require juglines to be at least 3″ wide and 6″ long. Good to go now! While at it, replaced the Name and Address Label with a Customer ID Label. Liking it much better than the old rules!

Answering the mail to the question, “Why the OPST Commando Head for One-Handed Spey Casting?” The main reason we like the OPST Commando Head is it offers us the ability to fish places where our back cast is clobbered. Like when a tree is behind you and there is no room for an overhead or a side cast. In this case, I demonstrate using a 9′ 5wt Redington Fly Rod lined with a 200 grain OPST Commando Head, 30lbs test Mono Lazar Line, and a Floating Tip. The leader is a knotted tapered leader that runs about 9 feet in length. It’s one that I make as it is much cheaper to tie my own than to buy one. More fun fishing Denison Dam last Saturday for Striped Bass! Bite was slower than the weekend before but was able to catch a few; ended up keeping three Striped Bass for the Catch and Cook. Brought the Cabelas TLR 6wt Switch Rod with the Echo Ion 6/7 Wt Fly Reel again. And correcting from our last video, the fly line was a Rio InTouch Chucker with integrated running line. Stripers were hitting mainly striking on the Bennet’s Lunch and Craft Fur Clouser Minnows this round. Did catch a couple of White Bass as well, and found an anchor! Overall was a fun time! Quick trip after the day job to a feeder creek for some micro fishing with the two piece micro flyrod. Went with a Griffith’s Gnat fished dry as well as wet. Nice One On a Tenkara Rod from Australia!

Latest report from Steve in Australia has trout caught on the fly with a Tenkara Rod! Steve sends a picture of one trout – first one on a Tenkara Rod and a brief summary of the trip below. I went up to Marysville on Tuesday afternoon and fished my tenkara rod in the recently stocked lake. Once I got used to the limited casting range, I really enjoyed it. With the 8 foot rod, 12 foot level line and 6 foot of 3 pound tippet, I could reach out over 20 feet, which was quite adequate. I tried soft hackle flies and nymphs but had no luck with them. Changed to a black Woolly Worm and caught and released 6 nice pan size rainbows. All up pretty happy with the outfit, even if it was a little under gunned for lake fishing. Fiberglass Two Weight This Round!

Day started out cool but things warmed up including the fishing. Caught about 20+ fish. Largest fish was a Bass that went about 14″. Used a variant of the Foam Grasshopper and a Saddle Hackle Streamer. Caught all but one fish on the Foam Grasshopper! Lotta fun on a 2WT Fiberglass Rod! Pics of some of the fish caught today; ran out of battery, was not able to get pictures of all the fish.

Eagle's Nest "aka In-N-Out Burger" Pond...! #switchrod #flyfishing

Decided to try another pond that we have not fished for some time. This time went to the pond behind In-N-Out Burger in Allen. It’s formal name is Eagles Nest Catch and Release Pond but we like to call it In-N-Out Pond for ease of reference. Brought the six weight Switch Rod this time, and fished Damsel Flies and a Guadalupana to catch Bass and Bluegill. Would have kept fishing Damsel Flies but lost what we brought with us to snags. Fun time… also, added a short snippet of the ponds along the Village Trail that runs between Allen and Fairview. There are three and all hold fish, just no Bruisers caught by us for some time now.
