How We Setup a Sabiki Slab and Jig Rig for Kayak Fishing and Surfcasting?

Here is an updated variation on the Sabiki Slab and Jig Rig that we have been using for kayak fishing and surfcasting from lake points over the years.

The rig still uses three different monofilament lines – 30lbs, 20lbs, and 12lbs test. And, it still uses a Slab lure and three Jigs. The only difference is we no longer pass the dropper line for the jig through the overhand knots tied on the main line.

Instead, we jam the uni-knot against the overhand knots and one of the barrel knots. This makes for a quick re-tie when a jig breaks off.

We continue to favor this setup as the 20lbs test line to the slab will breaks off, saving the 30lbs mainline and jigs in the event of a snag.

Moreover, the 12lbs droppers will breakoff before the 30lbs mainline also saving us from re-tying the entire rig while on the water!

Made it to the Blue River today to check things out. Great day to go… only one little Bass this round but did get lots of casting practice in with the Switch Rod – 6 Weight Cabelas TLR combined with the Liquid Lamson 4 and the Rio Switch Chucker line is balancing well. Getting great casts and distance with the two-handed Switch Cast now. Plus… always good to be able to fall back to the cast we use when shoulder is hurting from a past injury. For want of a name for it, calling it the “hurt shoulder cast”. Here is a video snippet of some of the casts used today.

A follow-on video and podcast of our recent trip Tenkara Fishing a creek. In this fishing podcast, we talk about lessons learned tenkara fishing in close quarters where brush and overhead branches limit the use of fly fishing gear and have clobbered our back cast. Easily remedied with a fly rod and switch and roll casts, we wanted to try fishing with a tenkara rod… a 12′ tenkara rod lined with 12′ of fly line and 3′ of leader and tippet. We learned that the tenkara rod worked well fishing the creek especially the use of the “bow and arrow” cast. We also learned that shortening the fly line to 6′ would help in working the fly under the overhang branches in the creek. Denison Dam Tonight

Always good to  get reports from the Lake Lavon Fishing Team!   They now seem to be on a regular schedule of turning on the water at 12:40 pm and turning it off at 5:00 pm on weekdays. The stripers are beginning to school some beginning around noon, but they really turn on when the siren blows signalling the start of generating. They will stay up busting the top for 20-30 minutes and you can have a lot of fun fishing from shore on the Texas side during that time period because they are schooling right next to the shore. Sometimes they will also feed on top right after they turn the water off. They will hit topwater pencil poppers with abandon while they are schooling! I think the siren causes a vibration in the water which causes the shad to start moving and the stripers are ready and waiting for them. COAF Field Team Vlog #1... Sonic Pond This Round

Playing around with the camera and green screen. Put together Vlog #1 that shows the action at Sonic Pond using the Traditional III Fly Rod from Cabelas and a Foam Grasshopper! Had started out with a Near Deere but after took hook ups with Bass that threw the hook, decided to switch to the Foam Grasshopper! Lost count of how any Bass were caught. No Bruisers but would say it was in the double digits! Do stay tuned for more Vlogs; hope to mix things up some more once we get the hang of the camera/green screen!

Why We Like Maltese Puppies #maltese

Yesterday, was able to get a cast or two with the TFO Fly Rod. Casting the OPST Commando Head with the coated running line made for much easier line management. So far so good… will likely use this rod in place of the 5wt that has been “retired” to the closet. Have a video of the fishing yesterday; still editing it… only caught one Bass and fouled hook at that. Temps were chilly, Bass were not biting… even picked up one by hand and moved it to a more aerated area. For now, Charlie and I have been preparing for warmer weather; plan to take him kayak fishing later in the year. That said, how about a skit to provide a little humor to our viewers!
