Updates from this weekend’s fishing fun! Had lots of fun this past weekend fishing for trout at Frisco Commons!

It’s Monday, February 10

  • Updates from this past week
  • Frisco trout stocking happened
  • Lots of people limited out

Saturday was sunny. Go to lure, bait, and flies…

  • Lures – Super Duper, Rooster Tail, Kast Master
  • PowerBaits – Trout Bait and PowerWorms
  • Fishing Flies – Dry Flies, Near Deare, OWB, RBW
  • Bubble Fly Rig Variant – replace with Kastmaster and trailing fly

Sunday was a misty morning , then a rainy day. Go to fishing flies…

  • Olive Near Deere no indicator – short pulls, steady retrieve worked well initially. Later, a 6 count pause to let the fly sink, followed by long pulls and pauses
  • Dry Flies – do match the hatch, pattern less important than size and color
  • Like to have a Griffiths Gnat sz 18 as a backup
  • 5PM Hatch! Keep an eye out for it!

Gear Notes

  • MaxCatch 2wt 10ft Fly Rod
  • Echo Ion 2/3 Wt Fly Reel
  • Rio Trout Max Shooting Head – Rio Trout Max #2 in 200 grain
  • OPST Lazar Line 30 lbs Test
  • Lesson Learned: Fly Rod works well with the Trout Max but Lazar Line tends to slip under spool. Switched line to Hydros SL1 Fly Reel. No line slippage.

Really nice day! Still have video to edit but did limit out at Towne Lake in McKinney; caught but released five Rainbow Trout that went for an Olive Near Deere using the same setup as we used yesterday at Murphy – Corqs Strike Indicator and a Near Deere set 3 feet below it. Dead drift worked as well as a few short pull retrieves. Short on time but still a fun time… plus Charlie the Maltese Puppy got to see his first… hopefully many more to come, Rainbow Trout! Video still in the works; will post on our YouTube Channel when done. But, for tonight, we are chillin and grillin steaks and winding down this weekend!

Bass and Bluegill This Round

Tested out a new fly pattern – no name for it yet. Caught a Bass and lost a Bass, then switched to damsel flies and caught Bass, Bluegill, and Sunfish.  Will tweak the new fly pattern more, and “test” it out again. Was good to see lots of fish near shore in their beds. Looked like the bigger Bluegill were further out from shore this year. Regardless, makes for some good fly casting practice for distance… Fun stuff!

Mardis Gras Near Deere Keeps Working

More fun catching Bass on the fly with the Mardis Gras Near Deere. Caught ten this time in just under an hour. But, had to call it quits early to go on a pizza run for dinner. No worries… still beats working! Playing the next few days by ear; will see what the change in weather brings. Pattern that worked for us yesterday and today was a fishing fly that simulated a small bait fish 1-1/2 to 2″ in length. If not fly fishing, would go with a small Road Runner of Crappie Jig on a steady retrieve using Ultralight Spinning Gear.

Kayak Fishing : Texoma

Good to know!     hurricanecraig: Texoma Fished Texoma this morning from 6:30 until about noon. Water was 61 degrees. We launched at Eisenhower state park. I was trying to catch black bass but caught crappie and striper before I caught my first ever smallmouth before leaving. It was tiny. Bethany "Flats" for a Quick Trip

Decided to fish Bethany Lakes again today after work. Only had about an hour but it was enough to catch a few Bass and Bluegill from the flooded area of the Horseshoe Pond. Calling it the “flats” since the water is less than a foot deep and the Bass cruise the area in search of a bite like the Redfish do in the Laguna Madre! All went for a Pink Near Deere. Ran out of them yesterday but luckily the pattern is an easy one. Now have two – one on the fly rod and another in the fly box.
