Quick Tie - No Herl Griffith's Gnat #flytying

Here is a simple tie for an already simple pattern… it’s a Griffith’s Gnat less the Peacock Herl. Mainly use this one as a trailing fly to a tandem rigged lead streamer like a Wooley Bugger or Near Deere.

It’s fished wet but can be fished dry as well. Tends to do well when “bugs” are emerging have hatched but seem to have not made the final push to fly off… instead they sink and become food for hungry trout!

Recipe:
Size 14-18 dry fly hook
Black Dacron Tying Thread
Grizzly Hackle – long… at least 2″ or more in length

TBT time Friday evening fishing an old favorite of ours… the Betts Bream Getter. It’s the fishing fly we derived the Foam Spider pattern we tie. Key tips this round when fishing the Betts Bream Getter: First, stand-off from the bank about 5 to 10 yards and work the area near the bank. Anticipate a strike. If none, then proceed closer and work the pond casting out as well as along the bank. Second, wait to start the retrieve 5 to 10 counts, letting the fishing fly sit motionless. Oftentimes, a strike will happen. Next, start the retrieve with short pulls on the fly line to create a stop and go motion. Do pause between pulls, and do watch for a fish trailing behind it. Simple Fly Tying Pattern | Pat's Rubber Leg Variant

Been trying to tie the Pat’s Rubber Leg by watching others tie the pattern. So far, has been a rough go. But, did make some adjustments to one variant that has an extended body, and then used a tying method to attach the legs that is easier for yours truly… same method I use to tie legs on a Foam Spider/Grasshopper. Do check back… plan to “test” it out at a local pond, and then tie more if it produces a fish or two. And then, hopefully… on to the Blue River and/or local stocked trout! More to come!

That time of year when fishing questions start coming in. This one relates to getting started in fly fishing – specifically, our thoughts on budgeting for a fly rod/reel combo. In this video, the introduction has a past video playing in the background… yours truly is casting a OPST Commando Head and no rod or reel at the local pond. It’s a quality line that makes for some nice casting especially when our back cast is clobbered. Then, I describe a fly line that I will demo casting using a bamboo stake like the ones used to support tomato plants in a garden. If a quality fly line can be cast using a stiff bamboo stake, then a good fly rod should easily cast the same fly line. PS: Our suggestion has remained constant over the years… in general, we like to first purchase a quality fly line, then will buy the fly rod, and then either buy the reel last or repurpose one we already have. More tinkering around with ice fishing rod components. For ease of reference, calling it the Do It Yourself (DIY) Tanago Rod. Going to use it for Micro Fishing; hopefully to catch one of those “guppy” looking fish! Easy to make… used a 20″ solid fiberglass ice fishing rod, a 12″ wooden handle, and a braided cord for the lillian. Add some 2 pound test mono – smallest line in the tackle box, ready to try it out! DIY Wooden Trout Net | Do Over Anyone?

Had some issues with the DIY Wooden Trout Net that I made several seasons back. In colder weather the lacing tended to become stiff and did not open up well. Sure enough the trout were able to jump out of the net and back into the water. Decided to order a net from Amazon. Net arrived yesterday, and in short order and a few zip ties later, I have a net that will definitely hold a fish or two! Cheese Cloth and Bread as Bait

Received a question about how we used cheese cloth when fishing with bread as bait. Below is a brief summary of what how we do this: Form a bread ball with the bread, Then, place it in the middle of a 4″ x 4″ piece of cheese cloth, Next, take two opposing corners of the cheese cloth, pull them together and thread them on to a Circle Hook. Do the same with the remaining corners of the cheese cloth. With all four corners threaded on to the Circle Cook, twist the bread ball covered with cheese cloth around to tighten the cloth. Finally, pass the hook once through the bread ball, not in the middle but more on the side. This will keep it from twisting off. That’s it… Good luck!
