Foam Grasshopper Time! #flyfishing

Headed out to Kroger Park after work today. Fished a Foam Grasshopper and managed several Bluegill and a couple of Bass. Was concerned the latest front had them deep. As luck would have it, they were striking on top… water was still warm. Not sure if it will stay that way tonight with temps forecasted in the 30s. No worries, will be back with a Grasshopper again when temps come back up.

Log Book Entry: 3/13/17

  • Location: Bethany Ridge Park Pond aka Kroger Park (Allen)
  • Time: 18:00 – 18:50
  • Weax: Clear, “Sweater”, Windy
  • Rod: Cabelas TLR 4wt – 7’6″
  • Reel: Ross Flystart 1 (4wt Reel) – 5wt Flyline

 

Comments:

  • Windy and cold temps despite sunny conditions. Was concerned the fish were deep and would not take a Foam Grasshopper. Luckily, the water felt warm still and the fish were readily striking the fishing fly!
  • Had a number of missed strikes as well as short strikes as Bass and Bluegill went for the fly. Also, noticed several nice size Bass… however, they were not interested in the grasshopper.
  • Various retrieves worked with most going for movement in short “jerks” of the line with a pause in between.
  • Could not see any Bluegill nests but had a hard time due to the windy conditions seeing what lay below the waters surface.

 

Landed:

  • 2 Bass – 10″ – White Foam Grasshopper – Sz 16
  • 6 Bluegill – 4″-6″ – White Foam Grasshopper – Sz 16

Report from Somerville!     J-Moe: Re: Lake Somerville Lake level receded to 248 ft. 10 ft above normal and releasing 2167 cfs. It's raining again today. Hopefully, it won't get to heavy. The Brazos and the Yegua water shed are both taking on water though. I noticed the water below the dam had risen about 6 inches to a foot so the Brazos is still taking on some water from the previous rains. Lake Somerville

I went out to the lakeside of the dam last week to see if there were any white bass surfacing. Just before dark there were a bunch surfacing but they were all small. I suspect they were the crop from the spawn earlier this year. Looks like we had another good spawn as there were lots of them surfacing. I sure hope we get some good rains before December as the lake is over a foot low and I suspect the COE will have to flow some more water this summer.     Retrieved from http://texasfishingforum.com/forums

Update from Australia....

Work schedule remains crazy right now but still making time to get the latest update from others in the field. One update in particular comes from Steve in Australia. Here is the latest update courtesy of Steve… Great report and pictures. Keep them coming! Last Friday, I waded up the Grace Burn, which runs through Healesville and caught/released a nice wild brown trout on a Berkley 1″ Nymph fished on an ultra light spin outfit. Never used the Nymphs before and was very impressed with their fish attracting qualities. On the retrieve before I hooked this trout I saw a boil near the lure and then hooked the trout on the next cast. I may even try these Nymphs on the fly rod. Later that morning I’d arranged with the local water watch group to collect bug samples in the Grace Burn. We spent a couple of hours collecting and counting bugs and I’m pleased to say that the Burn scored very well as a healthy creek, which didn’t really surprise me. There were plenty of ...

Another great report from Texoma!!     texoma1231: Fly fishing Lake Texoma July 5th Put in at Eisenhower State Part this morning at 6:00am. Just missed the rain. Actually it sprinkled some as we were putting the boat in the water. We were using 8wt fly rods today in hopes of some larger stripers. Our first fish came just at the west corner of the cove at Eisenhower and it was a nice 2 1/2 lb small mouth. Followed by the same size large mouth. It was not long until we spotted some fish on the surface just out from the marina. We could tell that the fish were not large but it was the first top water action since fishing in Little Mineral trip a few days ago. We never got out of sight on Eisenhower and caught stripers and sand bass on top water most of the morning. We did catch some on clousers also. We were off of the water by 10:45 and had boated at least 35 fish between the two of us. All fish were between 13-14 in...

Out and About Sunday Morning Pond Fishing! #coaffieldteam

[UPDATE: Added the video of the evening round below and a link to google maps. Pond is in Fairview on Fairview Parkway.] Started Sunday morning with a swing and miss at the “Pond Behind In-N-Out Burger”. Tried the usual spots without a strike, but did see a nice Bass along the bank… that is, did spook a nice Bass! Windy and cold but not ready to call it a morning, decided to move to another spot just down the road… it’s the pond along Angel Parkway. Forgot its name; calling Angel Parkway Pond for ease of reference. Windy and cold still, did not plan to fish for long. But, then got a bite on the PMOT… turned out to be a nice Bluegill! Stuck it out for longer, even after losing the PMOT… snapped it off while casting. Switched to a Muddler Minnow, hoping for a repeat like yesterday where a Bass took it as it was “sputtering” just under the water’s surface. No luck! Was about ready to head home, but decided on “one more cast...

Weekend is Here... No Solid Plans

Sunset at Celebration Park The weekend is here and a quick glance at the current temperatures shows a chilly 45 degrees Fahrenheit. No solid plans for fishing yet as the Team has non-fishing things to take care of before wetting a line can happen. No worries though as we will have a fly rod ready to go if the chance to fish does come up! We do note the Trout Fishing Derby at Oklahoma’s Blue River starts today. Hope to see a few Bruisers show on the Leader Board. Each year the Trout Stocking gets a supplemental stocking of some nice size Rainbow Trout to make things interesting! Also, reports from the Texas Fishing Forum show the bite is on at Beaver Bend – see  TFF’s TarponFly Guide Report . Things may get crowded as there is a festival happening in the area this weekend, so plan accordingly. For the Team the Blue River and Beavers Bend will have to wait until another weekend. Question on Fly Line and Use

Question that originated the fly fishing line discussion… MUHerd: Question on Fly Line and Use Hey all, I've never used a fly rod before but am looking to start. I am not 100% clear on what all goes on your reel. OK, first goes the BACKING. Then comes the actual highly visible FLY LINE. Is the next thing that comes the LEADER and then a TIPPET? Do you tie your fly to the TIPPET? Please put those components in the right order for me. OK...can you just tie a perfection loop in some mono and attach it to the fly line and tie the fly to it? Do you have to have a tippet? As I have learned pretty rapidly, everything to do with FLY FISHING is expensive. If you have to buy a leader and then buy a tippet and when you break off a fly you have to use a new tippet. Or, if you want to change flies, you have to cut and re-tie which means a few of those and you have to use a new tippet. Are there ways to make your own leaders? Do you have to use a tippet and if so, can you make those as well? Ple...

Another Round with the Micro Fly Rod

After limiting out on Trout, decided to have another go with the Micro Fly Rod. Changed the fly line by using less backing line and more fly line. No knot to hang up on the rod guides, so I was able to get more distance on the cast. Caught two little Bluegill and one Bass on a Soft Hackle at Frisco Commons Pond. Then, took a break to get hydrated again. Sun came out in force today; even think the temps hit above 70 degrees. Much different than last years freezing conditions at this time. Later in the afternoon, fished the Feeder Creek at Bethany Lakes, Soft hackle had a few strikes but no hook ups. Switched to a Red Midge in Size 22 and hooked several soon after. Then, noticed  fish feeding on something on the surface. So, switched to a Size 22 BWO and ended up catching several more. So far, have been pleasantly surprised with the casting capability of the little rod.
