Foam Grasshopper Time! #flyfishing

Headed out to Kroger Park after work today. Fished a Foam Grasshopper and managed several Bluegill and a couple of Bass. Was concerned the latest front had them deep. As luck would have it, they were striking on top… water was still warm. Not sure if it will stay that way tonight with temps forecasted in the 30s. No worries, will be back with a Grasshopper again when temps come back up.

Log Book Entry: 3/13/17

  • Location: Bethany Ridge Park Pond aka Kroger Park (Allen)
  • Time: 18:00 – 18:50
  • Weax: Clear, “Sweater”, Windy
  • Rod: Cabelas TLR 4wt – 7’6″
  • Reel: Ross Flystart 1 (4wt Reel) – 5wt Flyline

 

Comments:

  • Windy and cold temps despite sunny conditions. Was concerned the fish were deep and would not take a Foam Grasshopper. Luckily, the water felt warm still and the fish were readily striking the fishing fly!
  • Had a number of missed strikes as well as short strikes as Bass and Bluegill went for the fly. Also, noticed several nice size Bass… however, they were not interested in the grasshopper.
  • Various retrieves worked with most going for movement in short “jerks” of the line with a pause in between.
  • Could not see any Bluegill nests but had a hard time due to the windy conditions seeing what lay below the waters surface.

 

Landed:

  • 2 Bass – 10″ – White Foam Grasshopper – Sz 16
  • 6 Bluegill – 4″-6″ – White Foam Grasshopper – Sz 16

Only one White Bass this round at Brockdale Park. Caught it using the Daiwa Sealine Surf Casting Rod and Penn Squall 15 Reel. It struck a multi-rigged Marabou Fishing Fly that simulated a school of bait fish (at least a school of three that is). Did have some fun sight casting to two schools of White Bass that passed but only had the one hookup. Then, switched to a 2oz lead weight to practice casting. Had fun doing that, and then decided to put the Tennis Ball Fishing Float on the line. Once the Tennis Ball was wet, was able to cast as far (possibly) further than the lead weight! Fun stuff! Jug Line Fishing Again... Plus Snippet of Last Week's Fun! #coaffieldteam

Still sidetracked by the day job but luckily Saturday’s are open for now for some fishing. This round more jug line fishing at Lake Lavon. Was there on the Fourth of July and only caught one on rod and reel while kayak fishing. Had video but file was corrupted while transferring to the computer. No worries… this round, able to get the video to transfer and finished editing it! Also, still working on the fishing and side trips last month to the Texas Coast and Hill Country; added a snippet to the end of this video. Do check back periodically; hope to get it posted sooner than later!

I think my problem is that I find a spot that I think could hold fish, and I stay there making cast after cast and come up empty. From reading reports here, it looks like you have to keep changing spots until you find the area that they are holding. Deep down I know that I should pick up and move on down to the next hole, but I just cant force myself to make the move. I equate it to sitting at a slot machine for too long...you know you need to get up, but keep putting money in thinking the next pull is going to be the one. Where to Park at Brockdale Park when the Gates are Closed

Below is a map that shows the Group Camping Area, Equestrian Parking Area, Gate, and Brockdale Park. Since the gate is closed due to high water conditions, park in the Equestrian Parking Area, and then walk down to the Park. When you near the Group Camping Area (currently being used for a Girl Scout Camp), follow the road to the right and continue to the Equestrian Parking Area. The gate is closed to the Park due to high water conditions – the boat ramp is underwater, but you can still walk down the road to the Park.

Out and About Sunday Morning Pond Fishing! #coaffieldteam

[UPDATE: Added the video of the evening round below and a link to google maps. Pond is in Fairview on Fairview Parkway.] Started Sunday morning with a swing and miss at the “Pond Behind In-N-Out Burger”. Tried the usual spots without a strike, but did see a nice Bass along the bank… that is, did spook a nice Bass! Windy and cold but not ready to call it a morning, decided to move to another spot just down the road… it’s the pond along Angel Parkway. Forgot its name; calling Angel Parkway Pond for ease of reference. Windy and cold still, did not plan to fish for long. But, then got a bite on the PMOT… turned out to be a nice Bluegill! Stuck it out for longer, even after losing the PMOT… snapped it off while casting. Switched to a Muddler Minnow, hoping for a repeat like yesterday where a Bass took it as it was “sputtering” just under the water’s surface. No luck! Get Started Centerpin Fishing with This $55 Reel #fishing #flyfishing #centerpin

Answering the mail on the Centerpin Reel I used to catch a couple trout. So far, I like it... able to try this method with spending too much! I bought the reel in Amazon but shipped from the UK. It took several weeks for it to arrive. While it was intransit, I watched a number of videos on centerpin fishing, casting, and techniques. After it arrived, I practiced casting it using a Wallis Cast that calls for pulling the line off the reel and then casting. Similar to a double haul cast when fly fishing. I still need to practice my cast to reduce the backlashes I get, but I am able to cast it far enough to fish local ponds. My intent is to try float fishing it at the local tailrace - Denison Dam and possibly Lake Lewisville Ecological Learning Area (LLELA).  Both, offer a great opportunity to drift fish. Given the reel as virtually no drag, line comes off easily and should offer a drag free drift when fishing a tailrace. Do check back for more. And, do checkout the video short to see ...

BFS Fishing | Bass on Ultralight Lures with the Kastking Zephyr

More BFS fishing with the Kastking Zephyr BFS Reel zip-tied to the Orvis Practicaster Fly Rod. Caught one Bass today had other strikes but ended up losing the suspending minnow to a snag. Had to make the emergency run to Cabelas to stock up on ultralight lures. Picked up several lures but none matched the minnow we lost. If someone recognizes the lure, let us know in the comments. Will plan to buy more; really like it. It’s two inches long, weighs 1/16oz, and suspends. Fun Evening Fishing the 4wt and Rio Trout Max! #coaffieldteam

Too nice an evening Sunday to not go fishing. Went for a quick trip to Celebration Park to fish the East Pond. Decided to fish the 4wt Redington Pursuit Rod with the Echo Ion 2/3 Fly Reel spooled with a Rio Trout Max Skagit Head in 200 grains Bite started slow but picked up as the evening progressed. Managed catching little Bluegill and Sunfish once we settled on an Elk Hair Caddis. No Bruisers, but after a while decided to use one Bluegill as live bait! Sure enough had nice Bass take the Bluegill! Denison Dam Fishing | Caught a Gar, Lost a Big Fish, Almost Lost GoFish Cam

Last Saturday headed up the road for some Denison Dam Fishing. Got there at first light. Learned they have bright LED street lights that make the area bright along the Texas side of the river! They were not generating; water level was low, and the bite was slow. Did deploy the GoFish Cam and almost lost it to a snag. Lots of braided line. Dove in the river and retrieved it after cutting away the snag… lots of braided line in the water! Around 10:30AM, they started generating power. Stuck around to fish the river in hopes the current would bring more fish to feed. Luckily, did not strike out… caught a gar that went for shad! Later, had a few more good strikes but missed the hook set. Did get one to stay on but lost it after nearing the bank… it was a big one! Do check out the video!
